The expressions on Vampire’s face changed, and he instantly sat up, staring at me with furrowed brows. “What did you just say?”
He asked again as if he couldn’t believe what I had just blurted out. For a moment, I felt the environment around us changing from ambiguous to cold. I held the blanket close to my chest and parted my lips to say those words again. “I said, I’m going to get a divorce.”
Vampire opened his mouth and closed, but couldn’t say a single thing. Dissatisfaction was apparent on his expression, and my face sank. He averted his eyes and cursed under his breath as he swiftly got up on his feet. He glared at me. His eyes were filled with traces of anger that made me flinch.
What was wrong with him? It wasn’t like I made a mistake or anything like that. But for some reason, this kind of action made me anxious. I glanced at him pitifully and asked, “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
It was because of Vampire that I had originally decided to get a divorce. I wanted to spend more time with this guy without any restrictions. I wanted to have an affair without feeling guilty of acting behind my husband’s back. Wasn’t this natural and logical for me to do that? Shouldn’t every girl in love not actively seek an extramarital affair and just go with what was right?
So according to Vampire, this wasn’t the right thing to do?!
My heart couldn’t help but pain at this thought. Anxiety in my mind grew stronger as he stared at Vampire’s face that remained cold as usual.
Without saying a single word, he went and got dressed. My eyes continued to follow him and eventually, even I got up and got dressed. But the entire time, Vampire didn’t even spare a glance at me. I was standing naked in front of him. If it were before, he wouldn’t have missed a single chance to see me naked. But now, he only lowered his head and wore his pants.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore and blurted out as I clasped the strap of my bra. “What’s wrong with you?!”
But before Vampire could open his mouth to say a single word, his cell phone rang. Since the phone was placed beside the bed on a cabinet near me, I could see the screen clearly, and the first thing I saw was a name ‘Anna’ displayed on the top.
Then I saw Vampire picking up the phone, and his expressions changed suddenly. That is to say, if earlier he was angry and irritated, this time he was anxious. He licked his lips and glanced at me before looking back at the phone as if contemplating whether to pick up the phone or not.
From his reaction, one thing was clear; it was perhaps someone close to him. Was it another girl he was having an affair with or his wife? I felt a bitter taste in my mouth as I parted my lips and asked, “Is this your wife?”
Vampire’s face stiffened before he shook his head. “I’ll pick up the call.” And after that, he instantly went out of the room as if he was in a hurry.
I stood frozen on the spot for a while before sprinting behind my editor. By the time I went out, he was nowhere to be seen. The hotel corridor was empty, and I realized that he had probably left the hotel already. Anxious, I fixed my appearance and dashed toward the elevator before I rushed outside the hotel.
At this time, I couldn’t help but think of those days when both of us were still at the beach, walking on the shore hand-in-hand. I remembered smiling at his face before I turned to face the ocean.
I casually glanced at the sky seeing the birds flying in the sky, and I felt envious. These birds were so fortunate to be able to fly like this as if nothing could stop them.
“Those birds are free. I wish I was like that.” Suddenly commented, looking up at them with envy.
Vampire held my hand tightly and said, “I’m here, ain’t I? I will help you fly.”
I grinned and leaned against his shoulders. “Thank God I have you. Otherwise, what would I do?”
“Let me guess.” Vampire thought for a while before a mischievous glint flashed in his eyes. “Perhaps you would have found someone else as your editor. Your story was that good! I was lucky that I found you before anyone else!”
I smiled, but when I thought of how he was only talking about books and nothing personal, I felt uncomfortable at heart. I left my cold husband’s house to embrace the warm flickering pleasure like Vampire’s love. But if this person were to go away, where else could I go? I got anxious at that time all of a sudden and turned to look at him with serious eyes. “Will you stay with me forever?”
I remembered that day on the beach, I received a smile from Vampire when I had asked that question that indicated he agreed. Or else, why would he smile? But now that I said I would get a divorce from my husband, my editor suddenly wanted to turn his back to me.
Was I really not worth it?!
I couldn’t help but feel a faint self-doubt in my mind, still continuing to follow Vampire, who was talking to that girl Anna on the phone. I couldn’t see his face. So I didn’t know what kind of expression he was making. But I didn’t want to dwell on this topic as I knew if I did, I would immediately consider the worst.
Suddenly a scene flashed in my eyes where Vampire would be talking to this girl named Anna with a big smile on his face. I shook my head, and I quickly dispel that thought, walking hurriedly toward my editor.
He saw me and said to that girl on the phone, “I’ll call you later.”
I decided to ignore that girl on the phone for a while because my intuition said that he wouldn’t be telling me about it anyway. “Did you forget about our promise?”
I wanted to remind him about how he had reacted that day when I asked him if we could live together forever. I had expected him to feel guilty and embrace me, but instead, he tilted his head and asked indifferently, “What promise? I never said anything.”
And I felt the ground beneath me vanishing. I mind buzzed with his words as he stared blankly at his face. What did he just say? I couldn’t help but feel choked up in my throat.
A terrifying thought entered my head. What if Vampire was playing with me?! I shook my head. No! He wasn’t like that. He was sweet and caring. How could he be like that? But then, he rejected the fact that he promised anything.
When I thought about it, wasn’t he right? I had just assumed that he had promised me that we would stay together forever based on just a smile from him. That expression could have meant anything.
Suddenly, the pain in my heart grew stronger as tears appeared in my eyes. The feeling of sadness was so overwhelming that I even forgot where I was! My knees felt weak as I fell on the ground, but this time, Vampire wasn’t here to catch me in his embrace. A sudden feeling of loneliness was too much for me to handle.
Suddenly, the ringtone rang and my eyes flashed on the Vampire’s screen. It was Anna again!
