With a thin figure, Sammy looked rather lonely in the half empty bar.
He raised his head and gulped a glass of wine.
Serina walked over and said, “Are you having a one-person party before getting married?”
Sammy looked up at her and said, “Serina, have a seat.” He pointed to his side.
Serina walked over and sat beside him. She had her legs crossed and said, “What? You are getting married, so you want to draw a clear line with your ex-girlfriend? We won’t contact each other anymore. Right?”
Sammy raised his head, his red eyes showing sadness. He drank so much that his face blushed.
Having been his girlfriend for many years, Serina knew well about Sammy. He had low alcohol tolerance. His face would turn red even after he just drank a little. Therefore, Sammy rarely drank.
Seeing Sammy like this, Serina stopped teasing and said, “What do you want to tell me? Hurry up.”
“Where have you been recently? Do you need me to give you some money?”
Sammy said with a concerned face. He had got used to taking care of her since childhood.
It hurt Serina to hear that. She replied, “It’s none of your business. What exactly do you want to say?”
“Serina…. I really love you. I love you so much….”
Serina immediately looked away and said, “Stop it! You are getting married. I am your ex-girlfriend. You shouldn’t say these words to me.”
Sammy nodded, “I know you hate me. But all I could say is that I am sorry. I didn’t know what was wrong that night. I really didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know why Clara and I…”
Serina remained silent.
“I couldn’t control myself. I really couldn’t control it…” Sammy shook his head desperately. As he thought of that night, he felt shameful. He had betrayed Serina!
“You couldn’t control yourself?” Serina’s face was full of doubt. Although Sammy was not good at drinking, he would not lose control.
He was a stable person. Everyone knew that. Besides, Serina knew Sammy had kept a distance from other girls ever since childhood in case that she would get jealous.
“Yes. I just couldn’t control myself. I don’t know what happened to me that day.” Sammy patted his head to clear it, “Serina, I didn’t mean it.”
“Sammy, I know you didn’t do it on purpose, but why did you agree to marry Clara? Just because you slept with her?”
Serina couldn’t understand it. She knew that someone was to get hurt in this matter. But why didn’t Sammy choose her? They had been together for so many years.
Sammy suddenly stretched out his hand to unbutton his shirt. His chest was exposed. And Serina saw some wounds on it!
She opened her mouth, but she couldn’t make any sound.
Compared to hers, his wounds were real ones.
The wounds had scabbed. They should be old wounds. It broke Serina’s heart to look at them.
Sammy was a good boy ever since he was little. He had a strict father. From the first grade of primary school, he would be beaten up if he did not get A in exams.
Serina knew this better than anyone else. She should have foreseen that Sammy’s father, who had always been hard on him, would punish him. However, she didn’t consider his feelings at all and had been messing around.
Sammy gulped down a mouthful of wine, “Serina, my father beat me not because I slept with Clara but because, for the first time, I defied him.”
“What did you do?”
“I refused to marry Clara.”
His words were a fatal blow to Serina.
She didn’t expect Clara to get support from Sammy’s parents.
Sammy raised his head and looked at Serina, “I don’t want to marry Clara. I’ve decided that you would be my wife since childhood. But Serina, there are something… If I tell you, you will get angry.”
“Just say it. There’s nothing I cannot stand now.” Serina lowered her head. She picked up the glass and took a mouthful of wine.
“My mother said that the Nathan family needs a stable woman, who is diligent and thrifty enough to run the household well. In my mother’s words, she should be decent before people and can also manage the family well at home.”
Serina listened quietly. She knew that Sammy’s mother would not speak in this way. Her words must be harsher.
That’s right. Although Clara was not famous yet, she was a celebrity now. The Nathans could help her to be a superstar.
What about her? She didn’t even have a job after she graduated.
Besides, she was not a quite type while Clara was. It was natural for people to believe that she would be a good wife and mother.
“Serina, I really don’t want to marry Clara. But when I was talking to my parents, we heard that she had got pregnant.”
Serina sighed. She picked up the wine bottle and filled her glass to drink.
“Serina, you have been with Clara these years, but you don’t know her at all.”
Serina snorted coldly, “You mean… You know her better than me?”
“Clara’s mother is a prostitute. Actually, she hates it more than anyone else. She has tried her best to make everyone like her and forget that her mother is a prostitute! She is really pitiful…”
Serina sneered. ‘She was pitiful?’
“Serina, your parents have been by your side since you were little. You don’t understand that feeling of loneliness. Clara…” Sammy took Serina’s glass and took a few gulps. “She wanted to kill herself.”
Serina didn’t know what to say. Would someone like Clara commit suicide?
“Clara said she had slept with me and got pregnant. People would believe that she had got her mother’s gene as a prostitute. She had heard how others cursed her mother since childhood. She did not want to live like that. She would rather die.”
“Sammy, do you believe her?”
“Of course. Serina, Clara is your sister. She has been living a miserable life. If I didn’t agree to marry her, she would have died!”
“Miserable?” Serina bit her lips and held back her tears. She had heard too many people say that. “What about me?”
Sammy lowered his head and said, “You have always been an independent girl. I think you will be happy even without me…”
He suddenly lowered his voice. It was so light that Serina felt she had an illusion.
Serina raised her head to look at the ceiling, “Tell me, if Clara didn’t mean to kill herself, if she was not who you think she is, would you still marry her?”
