A little space

Jace
It is quite dark when I leave Amy’s apartment. I wanted to stay or drag Amy home with me, but I don’t want to be the clingy type of boyfriend. I want to give her some breathing space even though our bodies demand the closeness to each other. I want to hold her till we say goodbye to the sun and good morning to it when we wake up but Amy and I are still new in our relationship. We need to give each other space so we can make sensible decisions. Amy has a job that requires a lot of her attention. I also need her attention. She has to decide on how to satisfy both our needs.
I got her phone number. I couldn’t make the mistake of going back home without it. Now I can go home with a peaceful mind knowing that I can reach her by just putting on my phone. My car still has her sweet smell. I wish she was in here driving with me to our home. It will be our home soon. I will make sure that happens. We could reach home and I would kiss her until we reach our bedroom. I don’t think we could always make it to the bedroom. Things could always end in the living room, kitchen, the stairs… I could figure out a good number of surfaces. Oh god! I don’t think I will make it home safely if I keep thinking about this.
When I reach home, I realize I forgot the stupid key in my bedroom when I left. I didn’t think I would come back home this late. Luckily, the lights are on. Sophia and Jose are probably inside. I take the courtesy of knocking on the door and waiting for someone to open it.
“You came back,” Jose punches my arm with a huge stupid grin on his face.
“No, I am still there,” I fire at him but he still looks unaffected by my coldness.
“Come on, bro. Tell me all about it,” he gives me an excited expectant look that I completely ignore. I walk past him into the living room and collapse in the couch. Jose follows me with his undying grin and sits on the couch opposite me.
“Uhuh,” he coaxes me. I feel pity for him and decide to bring h out of his misery.
“I took Amy out for lunch,” I simply say.
“You did?” he fakes a surprised look and I roll my eyes about it. This is ridiculous. I feel like a teenager answerable to my excited parents after my first date.
“Yes,” I answer nonchalantly.
“And then?” he beckons me to continue.
“And then nothing happened,” I cut him off.
“Come on. You couldn’t have had lunch up to seven o’clock,” he insists.
“I took her back to her place and we talked,” I respond.
“Is that all?” he looks surprised.
“Yes, that’s all and I won’t tell you anything more,” I reply.
“Alright. Alright. I will excuse you for now,” he says.
“Good,” I tell him and lean into the couch. There is a sweet smell from the kitchen. Sophia must be cooking up something. My stomach grumbles and I realize that I am really hungry. It has been so long since lunch with Amy.
“Hi boys,” Sophia comes out of the kitchen with a killer smile. I almost believe the smile is actually directed to me until I find Jose wearing an equal smile. She reaches him and he wraps his arms around her waist.
“You smell tantalizingly delicious,” he muffles into her dress.
“It is just the muffins that I have baked,” she tells him.
“Hmmm. I love muffins, especially the ones that you bake,” he looks at her with adoring eyes. It is so uncomfortable watching these two loving each other. Maybe that is how I look at Amy, with adoring eyes that tell her that she is the biggest treasure of my heart. Sophia smiles at him.
“But I don’t love them as much as I love you,” he adds and Sophia giggles.
“You are a great chef, you know. Maybe Jace should invite Amy so you two can share some recipes,” Jose raises a brow at me. I want to fire at him that Amy is too busy to spare time, but I would also like to see her have a happy time with my family.
“I would really like to. I know the great recipes I would want to share with her. We could also share some baking skills,” she says.
“Please ask her to come over,” Sophia looks at me with beseeching eyes.
“Okay,” I say resignedly.
“Yes!” she cheers up. “I will start preparing for then.”
“I am not bringing her tomorrow,” I fire at her.
“Whatever the day, I have to be ready,” she says. I roll my eyes at her. She goes back to the lovers conversation with Jose. I miss Amy now. I wish I had carried on the plan of dragging her home with me.
I seem to be forgotten by the two lovebirds as they fill each other with love jokes. When I can’t take it anymore, I interrupt them.
“Are the others coming over for dinner tonight?” I ask.
“I don’t think so. We didn’t invite them,” Sophia replies.
“We can still make a late invite,” Jose suggests.
“No. It’s fine. We can have dinner alone,” I says. I stand up and stretch.
“Am starving,” I announce and rub my stomach dramatically.
“I’ll go set up the table,” Sophia says.
“I’ll help you,” Jose says and stands up. He follows his wife into the kitchen and I follow behind them.
After dinner, I head for a long shower in my bathroom. The day was a success despite my small breakdown in Amy’s apartment. Amy is such a strong woman. She helped me recover quickly. Where has she been all my life? I wish I had told her the entire truth but I had to spare out the ugly details of my parents being murdered. She would have freaked and asked me a lot of questions which I wouldn’t be able to answer. Maybe someday, there won’t be any more secrets between us. I will love Amy without the fear of Amy running away from me when she finds out that I am a werewolf. I hope that day comes soon.
After a shower filled with many thoughts about Amy, I heard to bed and stare at the ceiling. I don’t have a tiny bit of sleep. I switch on the phone and check the time. It is just nine. I look for Amy’s number on my phone and my face breaks into a silly smile when I find it. I hope she is not yet asleep.
Me: Hi. Are you still awake?
That is a stupid question. I shouldn’t have sent it. What if she is already asleep, will she text me saying no.
Amy: Nope. Still wide awake.
I can’t stop the huge grin that covers my face when I read her text.
Me: Why? Working so hard for a living?
Amy: Definitely. I have just received new assignments.
Me: Good luck with those.
Amy: Why thank you. You are being very kind.
Me: I have my moments.
Amy: I see.
I can tell from here that she is putting on that pretty smile.
Me: I have been away from you for only two hours and I already miss you so much.
Amy: I also miss you.
My cheeks heat up when I read her response. I bet she is now chewing on that lip that I have feasted on all afternoon.
Me: You know that I can come over there right now.
Amy: please.
I like it when Amy begs. I sit upright and put my legs on the floor. I remember my promise of space. If I go to Amy’s apartment, I won’t leave until tomorrow.
Me: I like it when you ask nicely but when I come there, you won’t finish your assignment.
Amy: Since when is my work one of your priorities?
Me: Since when I decided to be a sensible boyfriend.
Amy: I like boyfriend Jace.
Me: Hmmm. Which other kind of Jace do you like?
Amy: Kisser Jace. I like that one a lot.
Me: Oh! How many kinds of Jace are there?
Amy: A lot. I am looking forward to discovering more.
Me: I also look forward to showing you more.
Amy: Good night boyfriend Jace. You are not here but I still can’t finish my assignment.
Me: Good night, baby.
She doesn’t text back and I know she has gone back to her work. She is so lovely even in her texts. I know I will be rereading them plenty of times. I put away my phone and enter bed with my huge grin. At least now I hope I won’t have any nightmares tonight. Only sweet dreams about a certain beautiful brown-eyed girl.
