“Daemon?!” she asked and stopped in her tracks.
She’s feeling too happy and confused at the same time. Happy because her husband is alive. He survived his injuries miraculously. Confused because what is he even doing here?
Devon ran towards him and hugged him tightly while sobbing in his arms. He felt his hand on her head caressing it gently like he always does to comfort her.
And then he gently pulled away her hands from his waist that were tightly clasping around him never wanting to let go. “Thank you for holding up. Now leave the rest to me, Devon. You go live your life without me in it.”
Slowly, she looked up at him with an open mouth, her tears stopped from streaming down her blood-soaked face. She stood there as the meaning of his words finally registered in her head.
“No! I won’t leave you. I am the one who killed that monster. No one should suffer but me. It’s my greatest revenge against him! Why are you even doing this? You are severely wounded. You are supposed to be resting now. Don’t do this. I’ll go to prison. I’m the one who killed him!”
She put her hands back into his waists never intending to let go of him. It’s her sin. She should serve the sentence for it.
But Daemon already made up his mind. No one is going to make him back out on his decision. It’s for the better. He can still keep Devon safe even when he’s inside.
He caressed her face and smiled at her reassuringly. It was too much for her to bear, that’s why she was able to do it. Looking at her pale face and a resolve that’s already crumbling away, he could tell that the truth about the demise of their own daughter in the hands of her own father almost took her sanity away.
“No, I am also part of this. He killed our daughter. Let me bear all the consequences too. This is the only thing I could do for our child, Devon. I’ve hurt you a lot. You’ve suffered tremendously. Let me take part in it too.”
Devon could only shake her head incessantly. She can take being in jail than having him in the prison instead of her. She swore that she would never lose him but it turns out that she will still lose the only one she has now.
“I said you won’t! You’re not the one who did this! Officer, I killed Gestoni Farrows. I am the one who pulled the trigger! I am the one who killed my own father!”
But the officer only ignored her. Devon stared at her husband in disbelief. “Daemon! What is this?! Tell him the truth. Tell him I am the one who killed Gestoni Farrows and not you!” She cupped his face and begged. “Please my love, tell him the truth.”
“All the circumstantial evidence pointed to me. The suspect is only one of the two of us. I am the one who killed Gestoni, Devon. I hated him so much for killing our daughter that’s why I killed him.”
“No, that’s not true. Officer, please believe me. Do the powder test on me. Daemon! Please don’t do this! I can’t survive without you by my side!” she shouted in desperation while clinging on the helm of his shirt.
She won’t let him do this. Not in a million years!
“You will, Devon. You will be stronger without me. You will be fine. I will maybe be locked inside while supervising and protecting you. You can even fall in love with another man if you want to.”
His last words moved her indignantly. Her? falling in love with a man aside from him? No, that will never happen.
She’ll die alone if she can’t have him back on her side.
“What are you talking about?! I can’t live now knowing I’ll be losing you! My family will make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison! Who knows what they’re going to do with you there! If I am the one jailed, then they’ll take pity on me. Daemon, I’ll get out eventually. We’ll be together again!”
A sad smile showed on the creases of his mouth as he kissed her one last time. “We will be together again, baby. Just hang on if you can. Even if it takes years, you will always be the only one for me.”
“No, no!” she shrieked when he untangled her hands on his body. “No! Daemon!”
She tried hugging him again but he refused and stepped back to the shock of Devon.
“Daemon…”
He looked away to not meet her eyes. “I don’t want to see her. Bring me to the interrogation room now, officer.”
The policeman escorting him dragged Daemon towards the room.
“No! No!” She ran and was able to touch his back but the detective by her side was quick to stop her to keep her from going for him.
“No! Daemon!” she screamed in the hopes of him stopping back to embrace her. “Daemon, please! Don’t leave me! Daemon!”
“Come on, Mrs. Druft.”
“No! Daemon! Come back to me! Please!”
He did not look at her until he entered the interrogation room.
“I’ll wait for you, Daemon! I will never love any other man! I will always love you! I’ll wait for you outside even if it takes forever! I’ll be here for you. I promise you that!”
As the door closes, so does her heart. She blacked out after her husband left her.
“Daemon, don’t leave me, please.”
That’s the last time she saw Daemon. As she expected, the whole force of the Farrows family and their affiliating groups did everything to keep him inside. She was never been given a chance to visit him since.
“I’m not losing hope. I’ll see him again. Even if I wait for years outside, I’ll do it,” she promised herself outside the police station after she’s been denied entry for six days in a row. “I’ll come back for you, Daemon, not just for me but for our baby too,” she whispered while caressing her tummy.
