“I’m telling you, Melena. If you do not want to be beaten again then shut your mouth up!” Gestoni’s uptight voice echoed in the walls of the mansion that witnessed how Devon tried to cope with the death that was served in front of her.
But Melena remained in her place not backing down despite the immense pressure her husband is exerting against her.
“Even if you kill me, I would still tell her! I can’t take this anymore! I’m done being silent regarding this. Gestoni, that was our granddaughter! The first one we had! I can no longer carry the guilt inside.”
Devon slowly stood up from the floor both appalled and confused by her statement.
What is she talking about? What does she mean by that? Is it about Emily? Her instincts are telling her it’s about Emily.
“Mom! What is it you’re talking about?! Tell me!” she begged her mother hoping she would kill the suspense and tell her if what she’s thinking about this is right.
“Melena!” Gestoni interrupted to stop his wife. “Go back upstairs!”
Melena closed her eyes and as her lips trembled, she spoke out the truth. “Emily is dead! Gestoni killed her because he said he doesn’t want the bastard baby born out from a Farrows and Druft!”
Devon stared at the ashen of her mother, the unswallowable words kept on ringing repeatedly in her head. Is this really true? Did she just confirm the truth that has been playing in her mind for a while now?
Gestoni bridged the gap between him and his wife and slapped her hard on the face.
“Melena! I said stop talking and shut your fucking mouth up!”
Devon’s tears fell on their own despite her trying hard to not let them go as they please. Why would she even cry? It’s not true, right? She should not waste any more tears for something untrue.
Finally, she found her words not failing this time. “W-What? What are you talking about, mom? H-How? How can that happen?”
She looked at Daemon on the floor and to her parents a few meters from her. No, that is not true. Her mother is just lying! Her father told her to lie so they could manipulate her feelings again.
“N-No… no! That is not true! My baby is not alive! She is alive!” She shook her head profusely. “You’re just lying. Tell me where you are hiding her! Give me back my baby!”
Melena cried too and covered her mouth in such pain as witnessing a fellow mother, her daughter in this case, denying the truth because she can never accept it.
“Devon, please forgive your poor mother. I tried to stop him from killing Emily but you know your father. You know no one can stop him!”
She stepped towards her but Gestoni caught her arms preventing her from taking any more steps.
Devon fell back into the floor kneeling in sudden pain that’s attacking her. The time of in denial had passed already. Her system is slowly taking in the information or the confirmation of the real status of her baby.
“No! I can’t accept it! I told you Emily is not dead! You are only lying to me so you could keep her from me! Please mom! I’m begging you. I will do anything you want me to. Just return her to me. I’m begging you.”
No, she will not believe her no matter what. She will still hope that Emily is alive and no one can stop her from thinking and believing about that.
“Devon, I’m sorry if I lied to you for the longest time when I knew the truth. But please my daughter, believe me now when I tell you that I’m telling the truth now.”
She took out an envelope and gently put it on the floor and slid it in her direction. “You can check these papers to verify and this is where Emily lies in her final resting place.”
But she shoved the envelope aside and kicked it away with all her might. “I said I’m not believing you! Emily is not dead! She’s alive and both of you are hiding her from me!”
Melena bit her tongue to prevent herself from crying yet again. “No, Devon. She is really dead and she will never come back again to us.”
“She will!” Devon held her head up high too sure about what she claimed. “Emily is waiting for us! Me and Daemon are expecting her return to us. We have already prepared her room, her toys, and her clothes. Everything! Her room in our mansion is decorated with all the baby pink lights to celebrate her return to our arms so how dare you to say that she’s dead?! I told you she is not!”
“Your mother is right. Emily is dead. I killed her,” Gestoni said after a while of just being silent by Melena’s side.
Another batch of her tears fell down upon her cheeks. Her hearing about the death of her one and only beloved daughter killed her over and over again.
More than the pain it caused to her is the fact that Gestoni is just too cool with it like Emily’s life did not really matter that much to him. He’s saying it as if the life he took is just of an insect. It’s a human being he killed. It’s his own blood he slaughtered! How can he act so shameless about it?!
“H-how could you easily say that? Dad, she’s my daughter and she is your granddaughter! She’s your blood too! How could you do that to her?! How could you kill her?!”
The words came out a little too hard for her knowing the kind of thing her daughter experiences in the hands of her own grandfather.
Did she suffer? Did she cry too hard? The thought of it kills her in the most painful way possible.
“Because she’s a disgrace to the family! She is not supposed to be born anyway. Her life will not be easy so I decided for her. I gave her a better choice and that is death!”
She shivered at his answer. Can a human being as evil as him really exist in this world? “She’s only a few months old! She’s only a baby! How could you do that to her!”
Gestoni looked straight into her eyes, again, without any hint of remorse.
“It’s because I can, Devon. I can do what I want because I am powerful. If I see someone as a problem, I do not hesitate to end them. That’s the kind of power I hold.”
“Really? Is that really it?” she asked in a daze, no longer crying.
He simply nodded. “Yes, so if I were you, I’d slowly accept that she is dead. Case closed. Bury Daemon and marry the man I’m sending you. Go home, take a rest, and prepare for the wedding. Come on, Melena.”
She watched as her father took the hands of her mother back into the stairs. She also watched as her mother turned to her and mouthed ‘I’m sorry’.
This has always been like this.
Since she was a child, she had never for once felt to be seen by her father. Until now, nothing has changed. He still can’t accept her as his daughter.
He could have ignored me forever, hurt me for eternity but instead he chose to kill my daughter, she thought as she reached for the gun on the floor a few meters from Daemon’s hands.
“You should have done everything but this, you demon!” she shouted, tears blinding her again as she fired the gun at him repeatedly until he fell on the stairs down into the floor again, his eyes open, his mouth flowed out immense blood, dead on the spot.
She killed his father at that instant and there is no regret in her heart. Not any at all.
“No! Gestoni! Devon! How could you do this?! How could you kill your own father?!” Melena ran down to her husband and tried to revive him.
“It’s because I can. I hold that same power as you did and I chose to wield it against him,” she said proudly, barely even crying now.
At that point, she cannot even feel her emotions at all. Numb and pain are all the things she felt.
“I did not use it on Joffrey earlier. There must be a reason why and this is exactly what that reason is.”
“No! Gestoni! Devon! Call an ambulance! We have to save your father!” Melena continued performing CPR while Devon stood there looking at them.
“You said he killed my daughter and now he killed Daemon, there is no way I am going to save the man who did all these things to me.”
She laughed emptily. Her chest is already numb from too much pain and she can’t feel any pity for the man on the floor.
“Or are you telling me lies? If he really killed Emily, then there is no way you are telling Emily’s mother, me, to save her killer, right? Mom, if you’re telling me the truth, then do not ask me to help save him! Let him die! Let him die, mom!”
“No!” Melena got up and held her shoulders together and shook them repeatedly. “Gestoni is my husband first before I became a mother to you! Let’s talk about this later, okay? Let’s save your father first. Come on, help me.”
“No, I won’t. He’ll die here. Right here.”
“Freeze! All of you!”
Melena’s eyes widened upon seeing the police pouring into the whole mansion.
“Devon?! You brought the police here?! How dare you?!”
“I said freeze! Don’t move!”
Devon threw the gun and put her hands in the air.
“It’s time we put an end to this, mom. I’m willing to go to prison for this.”
“That’s right!” Melena can only look at her only daughter with contempt. “You will really go to prison! You’ll go to hell for killing your own father!”
Devon smiled and accepted her fate wholeheartedly. “I’ll gladly do so because I am unlike him who chose to hide behind his so-called power and money.”
“MRS. Farrows, you are in total deep shit right now. I don’t know what crack people like you in your family take but to do something as gruesome as killing your own father is already beyond me. Are you guys really bored to death? It’s not enough for you to play with the law. Now, you wanted it to render it useless. I promise you as early as now. I’m not letting you out.”
Devon’s hearing the tainting tone on the voice of the detective but she felt like she’s not in the room being detained. She’s somewhere else back in the room singing a lullaby to her sweet little angel.
“You should not. I killed Gestoni,” she bothered to answer.
“Are you aware that this is already an admission of your crimes? This will all be used in the court.”
“I don’t care. I’ll be more glad if you do that. I’ll be the proudest to know that I’ll go to jail for killing that fuck of a man!” Her voice grew a little too loud.
That’s right. She’s really glad to be able to do it by her own hands.
The detective laughed while shaking his head. “See, this is why I love my job. It’s the drama that I craved for. Mafia members like you put so much drama in your crimes that I can’t help but to be amused by the way your brain thinks but I pity you, Devon. Your Juliet x Romeo love story came to an end. You’re one of the huge mafia members I caught. I’m never going to let go of a big fish.”
She did not respond anymore. She can still hear him but her head is already floating away from there.
The door opened and the director came in. “Release Ms. Devon.”
The surprise on the detective’s face lit up. “What are you talking about? Why?”
“The real suspect who claimed to have shot Gestoni Farrows surrendered.”
“What?”
“Get her outside.”
He doesn’t have any choice but to escort her outside. While looking down the hallway, the new suspect was also being brought in who’s walking towards her heavily guarded. His head is wrapped in bondage, his face in stitches, and his eyes in blindfold.
But she can never mistake his jaw and lips for another man. She stopped walking and waited until the murder suspect passed her.
“D-Daemon?!” she burst out stuttering in shock.
