Breaking down

Book:The Billionaire Mafia's Wife Published:2024-6-3

Devon seemed detached to reality with only her mind on how to get Emily back into her arms.
Experience dictated Daemon that he can never do something that would convince a desperate person like Devon. She’s closed-minded now and she would only focus her energy into getting what she wanted right from the very start.
Even now, as she stares at him fearlessly and with a hint of disgust, he can tell that there’s no changing of her mind anymore but he has to at least try. He will try for her own sake.
“I will not hear any more of this, Daemon. If you don’t approve of this, then I will not force you to agree. I’ll leave this house with Lucy with me.”
She pulled him outside to prevent Lucy from waking up and continued their conversation in the other room.
“Decide now, Daemon. What would it be?” She raised her brows when he couldn’t produce an answer. “I guess that’s your answer after all. Goodbye.”
He caught her wrist when she turned her back on him. “No, no, Devon please. Hear me out please!”
She pulled away from him and stepped back. “I won’t! You failed to find Emily for me and now I found a man who would do everything for me. Maybe Henry is right. He can do so much more to me than you could.”
That fucking man again! Daemon trembled in jealousy and he did not shy away from showing it to Devon. “Henry is not your husband! I am your husband!”
He will never let any man near her ever again!
“Then support me! Don’t tell me to return Lucy to them without giving Emily back to us in return.”
Their eyes fought with each other as their emotions continued rising. Devon is challenging him while he is torn between giving in to her request and doing the right thing.
“Come on, Daemon. Give me your answer now. I want to hear it.”
He sighed and took a step closer to her to clutch her shoulders together. “Devon, please. This is not the right thing. Kidnapping a child would not make this all right. Doing this would only make matters worse. Let’s go back to our initial plan. You see, I found another lead to-”
“And what is the right thing, Daemon?” she taunted him. “Can you tell me and since when did you try to do the right thing? Come on! Tell me! Since when did you become an advocate for good?”
“I am trying to do the right thing now because I don’t want to keep making and repeating the mistakes that I’ve had that made me ultimately lose you and our baby. I also badly wanted to see our daughter but not at the expense of the suffering of another child.”
She smirked and yanked him away from him with a bitter smile on her face. “You’re a joke. You’re a mafia boss. You run illegal businesses. You kill people! Do not be a hypocrite if you tell me you never kidnapped a child.”
“I don’t and never will I!” he confessed. “I will never gamble with a child’s life. I am not that kind of person.”
She laughed wildly until tears showed up in her eyes. “Oh humor me more, Daemon. So your cruelty is only specially reserved for weak women like me? What are you? You being evil is only for select groups? Should I praise you?” She clapped her hands for him. “You want to hear good things from me about it? You want me to tell you how good a person you are?”
He shook his head feeling defeated by how she looked down on him.
“Turning a blind eye on this one would not even put a blot on your selective justice. It’s for our own daughter, that is if you really love her!”
“I love Emily! I always love our child despite you thinking that I don’t like her!” he burst out. “I may have not shown a typical kind of love for her which is one of the greatest regrets of my life but I love our baby, Devon. I love her even though she is not who I expected to be! I love her and I’m doing everything in my power to find her!”
Devon’s tears fell. His confession affected her more than what she thought it would be.
“Then show your love to her by pretending you never saw Lucy here. Be by our side just like what you always say. Be a good father to our dear Emily once and for all.” She hugged him tightly and he responded back. “Please Daemon. Do this for us. Do this for me and our baby.”
“Devon, you are not like this! Please wake up! The life of that child is at stake! She is your niece and yet you want to endanger her!”
She lifted her face to him and shook her head. “I’m not going to harm her! I’m not going to do anything bad to her. I just want to take her in so they could be forced to bring Emily back to us. Why can’t you understand that?”
She ran to the nearest thing her hand could get and threw the vase to the floor and brushed her hair aside. “I am sick of waiting and waiting patiently without seeing any result, Daemon. I want my daughter back now! If I have to cling on to another man to get that, then I’ll do so. If I have to do illegal things, then so be it. I’d rather do something than die in sadness in the process.”
Daemon calmed himself down and reached for her again. She did not resist him and just let him hug her.
“Do you think our daughter will be glad to know you’re doing this?” he asked while caressing her back.
“Do not use her against me! Any mother would do the same thing I’ve done for her sake.”
“No, Devon.” He let her go and caught her wild eyes. “Remember how you got so angry at your mother for taking your daughter away from us? That’s exactly what you’re doing now. You are turning just like her. Do not go that way, Devon. You are not like this. It would eat you up later. I’ve been on that road and it’s nasty.”
She froze on her feet taking in his words. Daemon wanted to comfort her more but decided she needed some time alone to think things through.
“I’ll leave you for a bit now to make time for ourselves to think about it.” He kissed her head and wiped her tears for her. “I love you through and through. I’ll be in the study.”
Devon’s lips trembled as she covered her face with her hands. She’s ashamed to admit that her husband is right. She is really like her mother now. She did the same thing she did. She’s becoming the very person she hated so much. She is really a Farrows. There is no denying that now.
“But I just want to have my daughter back. What’s wrong with that? I just want to hug Emily back. I want to feel her warmth against me. I don’t care if she can’t remember me or what. I don’t care if she’s invalid or what. I just want to see her. I just want my baby back!”
Daemon left Devon there but did not really go to the study. He stayed on the corner looking at her, watching her as she leaned on the wall crying continuously and screaming her feelings out.
As much as he wanted to be there but he knew she badly needed some time alone to process it.
“Please do the right thing Devon because the next time you ask me the same thing, I’m afraid my resolve will crumble and I’ll lead you more into our ruin.”
His tears fell and he sobbed along with his wife silently.
