Regrets cut deep

“You should let me handle this. At this rate you’re going, you’re going back to the hospital in no time.”
Devon just ignored her husband and went straight into the closet to change her clothes. They have just come home from surveilling her brother’s house but it didn’t yield anything. They still went home empty-handed.
She tied her robe and prepared to go to sleep. “No, I’ll come with you every day that you’re going to search for my baby. I know Emily more than you do.”
Daemon put his hands on his waist and breathed hard. Lines of exhaustion hardened his face. “You’re not even listening to me. It’ll be too much for your health. Leave it to me for now. I’ll take you with me if your condition improves.”
But Devon is strong-headed and she will not let anyone tell her what to do especially now that they’re inching closer into finding Emily. “I’ll go with you no matter what you say or do. I’ll heal completely if I find my daughter.”
Daemon breathed out, his patience is running out after a straight month of things not going his way. “Please, Devon. Just this once. See the reason okay? Please.”
Devon stood up angrily and shot him a look. “Why do you hate me so much as to prohibit me from searching for my own daughter?”
“What?!” He also stood up so now they’re facing each other in an argument that would turn into a heated one. “I don’t hate you. I care for your health, that’s why I wanted you to rest.”
“I know why you resent me,” Devon continued. “You planned to take me as your wife as your way of revenge against my father but what happened next isn’t part of your plan. You learned that I don’t matter that much to my father and to my family in entirety. In short, I was useless to you! You invested on something but you didn’t receive a profit from it. For you I’m just a liability.”
Daemon’s mouth opened to say a thing but he realized that whatever he will say now will be taken against him by Devon but on the other hand, if he will not say anything then Devon will really think that he hated her which is not the case now.
“No, you’re not. You’re the greatest asset I could have right now. You are my wife, Devon. Okay, if you want to come then you can come with me.” He held her shoulders but she winced them away.
“You hate me, Daemon. Every second of the time that I spent with you before tells me that you hate me because I am my father’s daughter! You can hate me for all you want but you don’t have to extend that to our baby.”
She covered her face with her palms in frustration.
“I’m not lying,” he said softly to calm her down. “I actually felt that before for you. I hated you but that changed.”
She raised her face to him, challenging him. “How? When? Why? Where? Because you said you love me? Daemon, you should show how much that love means to you. It’s not just a fancy word. Show me your heart, not just your cruelty.”
Daemon lost his cool and burst too. “Don’t forget Devon that you deceived me. You involved your family in this to try to hide my child away from me.”
But he quickly regretted having said that. He should be more patient with his wife. Devon has gone through many things already. He’s supposed to be her support, her guide but look what he is doing now.
“Because you didn’t want her!” Devon yelled to his face. Her tears cascaded down her face as she punched his chest. “You hated her because she’s a girl. How can you hate an innocent baby? How can you hate your own daughter?!”
Daemon just let her be. If she needs any kind of outlet like this, then he’ll give it to her. “I don’t hate her. I’m just confused at that time. What’s the use of talking about this now? Why are you bringing this up?”
She continued hurting him and didn’t stop until she felt exhausted. “You never even held her in your arms! You didn’t give her a chance to make you see how lovable she is!”
He hugged her in a tight embrace and brushed her hair while she’s still weeping. “I know that, Devon. That is my greatest regret until now. I tried to find you so bad so I could find her. That’s the reason why I never gave up looking for you.”
He kissed her head and cupped her face to wipe her tears away gently. “I wanted to hold her too. I wanted to hear her coo in my arms while I held her just like what you always do. I wanted her to smile at me too. I wanted her first word to be dad.”
He didn’t realize he was also crying. He blamed himself too for the disappearance of both his wife and daughter. On that fateful night, after another unsuccessful business meeting, he decided to quit being a mafia boss and go back to the clean businesses that his father left for him.
The guilt of seeing Devon with Emily in her arms waiting for him on the patio added up to his main reason for leaving this kind of dirty world.
He’s even ready to kneel on the grave of his father because he cannot exact his revenge for him anymore in order to prioritize his own family.
But then, just when he thought that he got the chance to redeem himself, he was shot, Devon is presumed dead, while Emily went missing.
Out of too much helplessness, he directed his anger towards Devon and everything went down the drain since then.
“You deceived me first Daemon so we’re even. Don’t you dare tell me what to do when it comes to my daughter,” she said softly while in his arms.
“I’m sorry, Devon. I’m sorry,” he managed to say despite the tears and the guilt.
