She took a deep breath before opening her phone again to call Kenneth, but he beat her to it. “Who answered earlier?” She immediately asked the man without beating around the bush.
“Oh, that was Janelle,” Kenneth replied.
Sabrina’s forehead slightly wrinkled as she tried to remember who Janelle was, and when she recalled the woman, she calmed down a bit. “Are you at the office now?”
“Yeah, just taking care of something. But tomorrow, I can come home,” Kenneth promised.
“Okay. Alright, I won’t bother you anymore so you can finish whatever you’re doing there. I love you,” she said, and upon hearing Kenneth’s response on the other line, she promptly ended the call and looked at her sleeping child.
She was in front of her laptop, working on the feasibility study for a business idea she had. Meghan approached her and asked her to manage her resort once it’s finished. She agreed, but she could only dedicate one year to the resort before starting her own business.
When she told Kenneth about her plan, he objected, saying she didn’t need to work anymore because he could support her. Although Kenneth’s intentions were noble, Sabrina didn’t agree and aimed to start her own gift shop when Scarlet turned four years old.
Sabrina was confident that her business idea would thrive, especially when it came to flowers since Meghan had a greenhouse filled with roses and other types of flowers. She planned to talk to Meghan and make her the supplier for her business. Yes, online gift shops were already abundant, but she wanted to offer something different.
She was close to finishing when someone knocked on her door. She thought it might be Meghan. She turned off her laptop and headed towards the door. She was excited to see Meghan again after several days of her absence due to searching for her runaway boyfriend.
“What are you doing here?” She asked the old man standing outside her room with a frown on her face.
“Can we talk?” Brandon asked.
“No! I’m going to bed, so whatever you want to say, save it for tomorrow,” she firmly refused to talk to her father after she learned about the conversation he had with Kenneth.
“Just a moment,” Brandon called the woman and tried to prevent her from entering her room again.
“Why?” she asked, annoyed with Brandon Hart.
“Join me and your mom,” he said.
Sabrina raised an eyebrow at Brandon’s words and wanted to refuse, but when she saw the sadness in his eyes, her decision to decline was slightly affected. “Scarlet doesn’t have anyone with her,” she made an excuse.
“I already talked to Thalia to accompany Scarlet even for just an hour,” Brandon said.
When he mentioned Thalia’s name, the woman suddenly appeared on the second floor, and Sabrina had no choice but to agree or think of another reason to refuse.
“We’re on the terrace,” Brandon said before turning away.
She stared into space after the old man left and Thalia had to raise her voice for her to hear. “I hate him!” she exclaimed.
“I believe he sincerely wants to reconcile and establish a good relationship with you as a father,” Thalia said.
“Then, he shouldn’t have talked to Kenneth that way!”
“He might have had a valid reason Sabrina,” Thalia suggested.
“I don’t care what it was! It’s as clear as daylight that he wanted to use this opportunity to crash Gabriel McBride. After all, they were competitors in business!”
“Just go to them, Sabrina,” Thalia said.
“Okay,” Sabrina replied.
When she reached the terrace, she found her parents happily conversing. She couldn’t help but feel a pang of emotion as she observed the two as if their past mistakes didn’t matter.
“Come, Sabrina.”
“What’s going on?” she asked, but when she sat beside her mother with her father in front of them, her chest suddenly tightened.
Before she lost her cool, Sabrina averted her eyes and looked up at the starry night. She wasn’t ready yet! She took a deep breath before standing up.
“I refuse to forgive you, Dad. How can you talk to Kenneth that way?”
“Sabrina!” Margaret called out to her daughter.
“Actually, we wouldn’t have a problem if you didn’t meddle with me, especially when it comes to Kenneth,” she said.
Brandon involuntarily swallowed his saliva upon hearing the man’s name because he still had a suspicion that Kenneth was hiding something. What if his hunch was correct?
While Margaret wondered why the man sitting next to her suddenly fell silent, it wasn’t Brandon’s nature to stay quiet because he always had an opinion about everything that came out of his mouth. She wanted to ask him if he was still thinking about the report he had read, but she was afraid that Sabrina might misunderstand everything.
“Are you sure about Kenneth?” Brandon asked.
Sabrina rolled her eyes at the old man because he kept repeating the same question. “I don’t know what your problem is with my boyfriend, but I love him. So I hope you’ll respect my feelings,” Sabrina replied.
“Let’s leave Sabrina alone when it comes to Kenneth,” Margaret said, and when she noticed the slight frown on Brandon’s forehead, she knew he didn’t like what she said. Nevertheless, her support for Kenneth wouldn’t change for the sake of her child.
“Are you staying on the terrace for a while? I’m going back upstairs, I’m sleepy,” she said and then stood up again to go to sleep. “Goodnight, guys,” she added, as if she were saying goodnight to someone her age.
She sighed deeply as she walked back to her room, but when she reached the second floor, she didn’t expect to come across Meghan. “Did you come from my room?” she asked the woman, and when she nodded, Sabrina smiled.
“I’m sorry earlier,” Meghan apologized.
“I understood. Hmm, coffee?”
“Sure,” Meghan said.
And since it was almost nine o’clock in the evening and the other helpers were already asleep, they both decided to make their own coffee and went to the kitchen together.
“Coffee is delicious with brownies,” Sabrina said as she took some brownies from the fridge. She baked them herself earlier because she was bored at home. She missed Kenneth, and if she had nothing to do, she might start overthinking again.
“I love brownies,” Meghan said as she started sipping the hot coffee in her cup.
“Here,” Sabrina said as she returned with some brownies. “Are you ready to talk about your outing?”
“We broke up,” Meghan answered, and Sabrina’s eyes widened. Was it really hard to believe that she and Marcus were over? She tried to fight for her feelings for the man, but she didn’t want to anymore! She wasn’t the type to chase after a man, especially when she knew she was beautiful.
“Are you serious? Is he going crazy? After disturbing your peaceful life again, he simply agreed to break up? What a bastard!” Sabrina cursed, and maybe if her older sister was in front of her, she might have cut off her genitals since she was useless anyway!
Meghan took a deep breath while trying to convince herself to forget what Marcus had just said to her. “It doesn’t matter,” Meghan said.
“Oh, Meghan,” Sabrina said sympathetically because she felt sorry for the woman. And when she remembered what Marcus had done, she imagined herself in anger. The man was causing trouble again to enter Arianna’s life, and then he would just leave? Marcus was really asking for it if they were to meet again!
“Do you pity me?” Meghan asked Sabrina.
“Nope! I know you can handle it,” Sabrina said with a smile. “Let’s just eat the brownies,” she added.
“Sounds good,” Meghan agreed because she wouldn’t gain anything if she cried again over a man.
“And you, don’t expect too much from Kenneth so you won’t get hurt if he ever leaves you,” she advised Sabrina.
Just the thought of being separated from Kenneth made her feel like crying because she knew deep down that it would be hard for her to get up again. “If he’s gone, I might die.”
“Hey, that’s too much! Will you die immediately? Can’t you just cry first and drown in tears or maybe dehydrate from crying?” Meghan teased Sabrina, who suddenly became serious while they talked about Kenneth. She was the one who was left and replaced, but Sabrina looked sadder than her.
“You’re really crazy, Meghan! What about you? What will you do now that Marcus is gone?”
“Life goes on, of course. I can’t just stop because he’s gone, or else my child will suffer,” Meghan bravely answered Sabrina’s question.
“I wish I were as brave as you when it comes to things like that,” Sabrina said because she admitted to herself that there were times when she couldn’t control her emotions and it controlled her.
“Just think about how pitiful Scarlet is,” Meghan advised. “By the way, where is Kenneth?”
“He had something to take care of at the office,” Sabrina replied.
“Are you sure it’s legit? What if he’s fooling you, and you don’t even know?” Meghan said, and when she noticed the sudden change in Sabrina’s facial expression, she covered her mouth.
