CHAPTER 22

After the wedding night, Sabrina assumed that everything would be alright especially when Kenneth was so gentle in their lovemaking. Little did Sabrina know that she would be maltreated by Kenneth and his family.
Shortly after their wedding, Kenneth’s behavior changed dramatically. He began to treat her like a mere servant. He would assign her countless chores, belittle her efforts, and subject her to harsh criticism. He wouldn’t even help her whenever Lorraine ostracize her or overworked her. Sabrina was no different from any other servant in the mansion. She was literally trapped in the nightmare of marrying Kenneth McBride.
Actually, she wondered what caused the changes. He has no other woman because it was not allowed. Gabriel McBride was so strict when it comes to that. Since the wedding, Kenneth even hired a new secretary, and she was not allowed to frequently go out to meet her friend. She could talk to Heather on the phone but she could only do it when she was free.
From dawn till dusk, Sabrina toiled tirelessly, catering to Kenneth’s family’s every whim. She cooked his meals, cleaned the house meticulously, and attended to her husband’s needs with unwavering dedication. Yet, her efforts were met with disdain and scorn.
Kenneth would often berate Sabrina, using derogatory language and making demeaning remarks especially when other family members were present. Yes, she noticed it that Kenneth would be unreasonably mean whenever his mother or sister was present. Then, Daniel’s wedding happened and Isabelle Ortega joined the family. Then, he became worse!
Kenneth stripped her of her self-worth and shatter her spirit bit by bit. She was once a vibrant and confident woman, then she became a mere shadow of her former self, tormented by the man she had vowed to love and cherish.
The abuse extended beyond verbal cruelty. Kenneth’s maltreatment escalated to physical aggression, leaving Sabrina bruised and broken. He didn’t see her as his partner but as a subservient object to be controlled and dominated.
Sabrina’s heart ached with sorrow, trapped in a marriage that had turned into a living nightmare. She yearned for the love and respect she once shared with Kenneth, but it seemed like an unattainable dream.
One fateful day, as Sabrina stood in front of the mirror, tears streaming down her face, she realized she could no longer bear the pain and degradation. In that moment of despair, a flicker of determination ignited within her. Sabrina vowed to reclaim her life, to break free from the chains of abuse that bound her. But then, it was easier said than done!
“Do you want to kill me?” Kenneth’s voice thundered as he tasted her fish soup.
“If I had any intention of killing you, I would have simply refrained from cooking and let you die of hunger!” Sabrina retorted, enduring the scalding broth that Kenneth McBride poured over her skin.
Kenneth cast a hostile glare at the woman upon hearing her response. To him, she was insolent and uneducated. “Watch your tone with me, Sabrina, or you might just get what’s coming to you!” he warned her.
“What might I get? From you? Hmmm, maybe,” she provocatively replied, further fueling Kenneth McBride’s anger. His eyes bulged with rage.
“Get out!” Kenneth shouted.
“Why are you acting like a spoiled brat, Kenneth? You are a grown man,” she commented but then, he forcefully struck the table before leaving the dining area.
He asked her to leave, but when she stood her ground, Kenneth was the one who left the dining room but on his way out, she was still able to hear the man’s curses as he walked away. Sabrina smiled triumphantly, having successfully irritated him even more. After all, she had been provoked first! Last night, she decided she would try to go against him if he would be mean again. She had enough of their maltreatment!
Sabrina wiped herself clean before pouring the broth into a bowl and tasting it. She couldn’t help but savor the delicious fish soup she had cooked earlier. Before eating, she retrieved the dried fried fish. She thoroughly enjoyed her meal when suddenly Kenneth appeared in the kitchen, holding a bag.
“Did you go shopping?” she asked him innocently.
Upon seeing the food on the table, he furrowed his brow and looked at her face. She was drinking her juice nonchalantly and acted as if he wasn’t there. He could narrow his eyes for a long time and she wouldn’t give a damn!
“I knew it,” Kenneth said after finishing the remaining broth in her bowl.
She was caught! Sabrina couldn’t meet his gaze when she was caught, and then she tried to force a smile but it seemed like the man’s expression has darkened. Suddenly, he grabbed her arm and dragged her away from the table. She tried to wiggle to get away but he was stronger!
“Let me go!”
“Shut up, you wench!”
“Where are you taking me? To your room?” she asked her husband who decided to sleep in a separate room after their wedding night.
Kenneth stopped walking and let go of Sabrina’s arm. “And why would I take you to my room? Are you crazy?”
“Don’t you miss me, dear? It has been a long time,” she teased him.
“Do you have a problem with your brain? Why would I miss you? Whoa, don’t tell me that you are itching down there to have me in bed. Was that the reason why you used some trick on the soup?”
Sabrina felt insulted by Kenneth’s last question, but she couldn’t show it. “Why would I need to provoke you when I have the right to demand it from you? I am still your wife, Kenneth, and you are obligated to have sex with me.”
“My God! What kind of woman are you?” Kenneth shook his head, leaving her behind and returning to the kitchen to eat.
She followed him because she hadn’t answered his last question yet. “Beautiful and kind,” Sabrina replied, further fueling Kenneth’s anger as his nostrils flared.
Kenneth found himself contemplating why Sabrina frustrated him so much, and said, “Let’s get a divorce. I can no longer tolerate having you in the house, Sabrina. You ruined my life!”
“Go ahead,” she challenged the man. “Tell your grandfather that you want to divorce me,” she told him.
“I will tell him tomorrow,” he answered.
“Whatever you say, Kenneth,” Sabrina said, but before leaving, she thought of a way to make Kenneth McBride suffer for making her life miserable.
