*Amanda’s Pov
Kat and Ryder went to sleep and by the darkness in the living room it is sure that they must be both asleep I mean it past 3 am now. Way past Kat’s bedtime. Even when we used to watch movies at night, she used to dose off by 2 am atleast. I have no idea about Ryder’s bedtime and I guess there might be days he hasn’t even slept seeing the empire he has built.
I walk silently to Ryder’s home office room making sure not to hit anything and make any sounds. I saw Kat keeping the lap in his office when we were eating our pizza. I pray to God hoping his office is not locked. I took a bobby pin just in case, though I have no idea how to use it to unlock. I hope I don’t have to use it. I slowly turn the door knob in hopes of knowing whether its unlocked. I release a breath I didn’t know I was holding in when the door opens with a slight sound. Thank God he forgot to lock his office.
I don’t think he is that careless to leave his office room unlocked when there might be important files in it. Though I have no idea why he did so today. Maybe God is really on my side. Hope he also forgives me for doing this crime of betrayal.
I take my phone for flashlight so that the light remains off so that they don’t know. I look around and am shocked to find the laptop is on the centre of the table kept openly that I mentally scold Kat for being so careless with it but at the same time thanking and apologizing her.
I realise that I haven’t thought this through. I mean who expects everything to be handed to you when you are doing something you shouldn’t do. I got the laptop but I don’t know what to do next. I definitely can’t take it from here, she will know it was stolen. So, I do the only thing logical, that is to erase the data in it so that she won’t get to know the location of the original uncle Damien’s laptop.
I go to table and take out the laptop from the bag and fire it on.
“I really thought you wouldn’t proceed with your plan.”
I paled.
Katherine.
*Kat’s POV
I slowly pulled myself out of Ry’s arms wrapped around me. He shifts which makes me stop to see if he woke up. Thank God he didn’t. I very slowly got off him but he stretched his arms searching for me unconsciously. I placed my pillow in his arms and that stops his shifting.
I half lied to Ry about giving Mandy a benefit of the doubt. I did decide to give her a chance but by putting her through a test. But obviously she failed not realising her plans were found out by me.
I knew something was up when Ry told me both she and her father went to meet him behind my back. Then I realised there were places where she slipped off. The times she used to push me to talk to Ryder about the laptop. The time when she paled when she found out I called Uncle Nat about the case. The time when the officer said they didn’t call Uncle Nick. I put all of them together to know she wanted to get the laptop. The only thing I didn’t know was why.
Why go behind my back to get something she obviously would have got if she would have just talked to me?
So I decided she wouldn’t tell me the truth if I voiced out my doubts but if I caught her while she tried to get the laptop she might reveal everything. That’s when I decided for her to come to our home when I knew there was nothing for her to do for finding my dad’s actual laptop.
I was proud and sad at the same time when I found Ry’s office room open. Proud of myself as I was right and sad to know I was right Mandy did betray me.
Ry always locked his office room for the fear any of his staffs could get his things. He gave me one extra key along with the house key. In his words, the house is mine as it is of his and anything that is his also is mine even if it meant me going through his confidential stuffs.
But today I decided to keep the laptop in his office so left kept the door open. I knew she would only come out after my bedtime no matter how much my eyes begged me to just go to sleep I kept myself awake by thinking of reasons why she would do this to me.
Just as I expected I finds her back facing the door trying to on the broken system. It angers me to see my best friend betraying me and with a lot of venom in my voice I say, “I really thought you wouldn’t proceed with your plan.”
I see her turning to me and looks as if she saw a ghost.
“I wouldn’t even have been surprised if she left with the laptop”, says a very familiar voice behind me. I didn’t even turn to see if I was right, I knew he would wake up sooner than later. Ignoring Ryder I ask,
“Why?”
She lowers her head and looks at the ground as if it is the most interesting thing.
“I wouldn’t say I am sorry for what I was about to do. But I am sorry for you had to find out.”
“WHY?” I ask again more harshly this time too impatient to listen to her say anything other than her reason. I feel a slight sting in my heart seeing how she winced at my voice but like her I too am not sorry. But I wasn’t prepared to hear what she said next.
“Because finding Uncle Damien’s real laptop brings death to you just like your parents.” She says looking straight to my eyes. Hers showing sincerity in the words she just uttered.
The thing my dad asked me to find takes me to them? If so, did my dad knew it or was it on purpose knowing it would kill me? Did my sweet daddy wanted to kill me or is she lying again? But her eyes say she is serious unlike the times it showed confusion and sadness when she lied to me.
