George nodded his head. “Yeah, I already told the cops everything. They’ll handle him.”
“Good”
“He’s alive too.”
“He is?” Both David and Bonnie stared in surprise.
“Yeah. Apparently he’s a tough old bastard, but he’s going to spend a lot of time cooling off in prison.”
“I guess so” came David’s reply.
“I also checked on Michael,” George added.
“And?”
“And he will be alright. The doctors say it might take a while, but the surgery was successful. If everything continues to go as planned, he will be alright”
Bonnie breathed a sigh of relief at this information. Everything would be alright. Everyone was going to be okay. She watched as George tapped David on his leg and realized that they weren’t just partners. They seemed very close and genuinely cared about one another. After he said goodbye to David, he turned to her.
“It was really nice to meet you, Bonnie” George said, “although the circumstances and situation in which we met were… really wild, but I’m glad I met you. You have had a great influence on David.. In a good way and I hope that…”
“Okay, will you shut the fuck up” David cut in before George would say something that would make him want to crawl under the sheets.
Bonnie couldn’t help but smile. “I’m glad I met you too, George,” she said, getting in on the joke. “Always nice to meet friends of David. He might be stubborn but he surprisingly has great friends. How you guys cope with him is a mystery to me”
Geroge smiled at her before he turned to David. “She has a sense of humor too” he said, “I like her”
David replied by rolling his eyes.
After George left, Bonnie turned to face David. He shrugged then grimaced as the movement irritated his wounded shoulder.
“Are you okay?” Bonnie asked, concern written all over her face.
He nodded. “Yeah. I’m just a baby, remember?” He teased her. “Your words not mine.”
Her lips curved into a smile that didn’t reach her beautiful brown eyes. She was worried about him. He could see it, and he hoped she wouldn’t worry so much. He shuddered and grimaced again as the movement pulled at the stitches beneath the bandage.
“I’m fine,” he assured her as concern flashed in her eyes again. “The gunshot wound was a through-and-through. A few stitches are all I got out of this. You don’t have to worry so much.”
He couldn’t blame her, because if he were in her shoes, he’d be worried too. It was a reminder that he hadn’t done much to deserve her care. That all he’d done was push her away when he should have drawn her close and held her. It was a reminder that if he hadn’t left, maybe he would have been able to protect her and she wouldn’t have had to deal with Jonathan at all. It was a reminder of that overwhelming attraction between them…. That attraction that he couldn’t shake off…. And yet after everything, she still cared.
She continued to stare at him.
“What?” he asked.
“Nothing” Bonnie replied.
He didn’t look like he believed her. “You’re just staring at me…. For nothing?”
“Yes… I mean… No… I’m just… I’m just glad that you are alright. I don’t know what I’d have done… or what I’d have been doing right now if Jonathan had really killed you.” she said. “For sure I’d have lost my mind. Since I I left home you’ve been…. I mean… you have been one constant in my life and I….”
She stopped talking because she couldn’t find the right words to express her feelings at the moment, and she was sure that she’d start to cry again if she continued talking. David seemed to understand. He stared at her for a moment, then he said “Come here”
Bonnie went to him and took his hand.
“I’m glad that I’m okay too… and I’m more than happy that you are fine too. I have no idea what I’d have done if he’d hurt you. I put you in harm’s way, and for that I’m very sorry. I have a lot to say too… about us… but I’d rather not say it here when I’m lying here in this bed. What do you say we leave and then we can talk properly.”
Bonnie smiled, but she didn’t remove her hand from his.” You can’t deceive me that easily.” she said.” We are not going anywhere until the doctor say so, so you better stay put.”
David returned her smile with a grin. “So now you’re telling me what to do. You’re not the boss of me.”
“As long as you are here and you have that wound on your shoulder, I am.” Bonnie replied, then she leaned a little towards him and added, “And I can’t wait to hear what you have to say, but your health is more important now so hurry up and get better.”
David’s heart beat faster. He had thought that she’d be mad at him. In fact he expected her to be. How could she not be after he’d pushed away so many times and turned her down too. Hell, he expected her to just leave him alone after he got better because that was what he deserved, but there was no sign of anger in her. Only relief… and the way she was staring at him made him feel like he had nothing in the damn world to be worried about. She made him happy and complete… and he was absolutely, head over heels in love with her.
He loved her good heart. The way she smiled. The concern for him which was obvious when he looked at her. He loved her hair and beautiful brown eyes and he loved that she never gave up on him. She was his woman. She was everything he needed. How did he not fucking see that earlier.
“What are you staring at for fucks sake?” Bonnie asked him with an eyebrow lifted in confusion, and David realized that he’d been lost in thought while staring at her.
“Nothing,” he replied. “I guess it’s my turn to stare. I Was just thinking how beautiful you are.”
“You’re kidding right. I don’t think I’ve ever looked this messy in my entire life” Bonnie replied, but she was smiling and she couldn’t help it. “I have blood on my clothes, you know.”
“Doesn’t matter,” David said. “You are one amazing woman.”
