Bonnie screamed as the shots went off, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw David and Jonathan crash to the floor. She thought he was dead. But he’d been fine. Not totally fine. Fortunately for him, Jonathan had missed hitting anything fatal, but David’s shoulder had been hit. Jonathan, on the other hand, lay dead on the ground.
She flinched as she remembered the image of Michael lying helpless on the floor, unable to do anything for him, then she snapped out of the shock and ran towards David. She shook him and watched as he slowly opened his eyes
“Oh God, David,” she cried. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. Are you going to be okay? Can you hear me?…I’m so sorry, David”
“It’s just a scratch,” David said to her and gave her a small smile to assure her and make her calm down. “Stop worrying. I’m fine… and so are you”
“Thanks to you.” said Bonnie, unable to stop the tears from falling. You saved my life. If you hadn’t come in when you had…” She shuddered as she realized that could have been her lying on the floor instead. She could have been the one dead.
The door flew open as George threw his weight onto it. “Get help!” Bonnie yelled. “He’s been shot!”
Her fingers skimmed across his shoulder as she tried to stop the bleeding. Seeing him in such a state scared the shit out of her. “Don’t leave me,” she implored David. “Please don’t. Don’t leave me again!”
He hadn’t wanted to leave her before. And he shouldn’t have. He’d been such a fool. George rushed to them and he and Bonnie helped David up. Then they hurried outside where they were joined by the other two guys who served as a lookout and their driver, then they headed out.
“You’re hurt,” Bonnie said to David as they sped away. “You need medical attention.”
“I’m fine,” he said. “We need to get out of here-get to someplace safe then we can talk about that.”
Bonnie wasn’t listening. “You are hurt,” she said again. “You need to see a doctor.”
“We can get a doctor to look at it at the agency,” David replied. “It’s fine.”
Despite her decision to let him go, Bonnie couldn’t bear to see him in pain. She might have decided to think and make logical decisions, but she couldn’t deny her emotions. His words to Jonathan also bothered her. He’d said that he was never truly interested in her, and she knew that he had said a lot of things just for Jonathan’s benefit, but she couldn’t help that it bothered her a little.
He looked tired, and Bonnie gently pulled him close so he could rest his head on her lap. He didn’t refuse the gesture but simply closed his eyes and breathed deeply as if enjoying the moment.
“He killed Michael,” Bonnie said softly. “I tried to stop him… but he…”
David squeezed her hand. “He’s not dead,” he said softly. “Michael…I found him in time. He is in a critical condition, but he’s not dead….”
Bonnie didn’t like the fact that Michael had been shot, but the realization that he wasn’t dead brought her so much relief. “Oh God” she said as her voice shook. “I was so worried that he was dead. I was so worried that he’d died because of me. I shouldn’t have doubted you ever… ”
It was all finally over, she thought. She was safe and so was David, but still she couldn’t stop the tears from falling.

David opened his eyes and realized that he was in a hospital…. At least the medical center at the agency. There was a doctor checking him out, and behind him, Bonnie stood with a worried expression on her face.
He could not believe he’d lost consciousness. Some damn bodyguard he’d proved to be…he thought. He must have passed out on their way to the agency. With Bonnie by his side…. that was the last thing he remembered. He’d kept telling her that he was fine, and passing out must have freaked her out even more.
He watched as the doctor told her the same thing, but she didn’t relax. She didn’t release the breath she must have been holding until the doctor finished asking him some questions, then pulled aside the curtain and walked away.
“I told you it was nothing,” David reminded her. “You worry too much.”
“How could I not worry? You got shot. You were bleeding and then you fucking passed out. You needed stitches and a tetanus shot,” she reminded him.
He flinched as he thought about it. He didn’t like being around needles. He shuddered as he glanced at the receptacle on the wall that held the used needles.
“You really are a baby,” Bonnie teased him as she watched his reaction. “I can’t believe how pale you got over those needles.”
The tetanus shot would have been bad enough if he hadn’t needed stitches, as well. He reached for his shirt, which was torn and stained with blood. “We need to get the hell out of here.” He said.
Bonnie looked shocked. “What? Why?”
“I don’t like hospitals, and it’s not such a bad wound. I’m going to be fine and I sure don’t have to lie down here for hours. Let’s get out of here.”
“Not so fast,” a deep voice murmured as the curtain around his stretcher moved again.
David rolled his eyes as George Howell came into view.
“Are you alright? You have a… urmm” George said as he studied Bonnie. He reached out a hand to the blood smeared across her cheek. That wasn’t her blood, though. It was David’s.
“Yes,” she assured him. “I’m fine. Just a scratch, but it’s nothing to be worried about.”
That was true but only because David had shown up when he did. But due to the hitting she’d received from Jonathan, she was certain to have some bruises beneath the coat she was wearing.
“David protected me from getting hurt,” she said. “He saved my life.”
She was being too generous, David thought. She shouldn’t have been put in that position at all. She never should have been that close to an active shooter. She never should have been in the middle of this or even targeted if she hadn’t gotten involved with him.
“Did the cops find him?” David asked George.
After they left the house. George had called the cops and Jonathan had been found, injured, but not dead as they had thought.
“Did they get Jonathan?”
