Estelle smiled and said, “Cristofer has a deep affection for his parents, so when he thought I killed his parents, he was blinded by hatred and treated me badly. Unlike him, Mr. Mysterious has been living without their parents since childhood, so he can see this matter more clearly and objectively from the perspective of an outsider and knows I am innocent.”
“You are lucky to have Mr. Mysterious. Unfortunately, Henry’s mother is not as lucky as you,” Rebecca took her hand and said with her voice softening. “Estelle, a thought suddenly terrified me. If Mr. Mysterious didn’t come to you and you didn’t have the money to have an operation to treat your lung cancer, would Yohan face the same fate as Henry?”
Nearby, Mr. Mysterious, who was walking toward them with a thermos in his hand, stopped his steps when he heard this.
“No,” Estelle answered Rebecca with a gentle smile. “Mr. Mysterious would appear.”
****
It was already dark when Dr. Cruise finished talking with Henry.
When Dr. Cruise pushed the door open and came out, Ms. Kosslyn, who had been waiting outside, rushed over quickly. “Dr. Cruise, how is he now?”
Seeing him, Rebecca took Estelle by the hand and pulled her toward the room at once.
With a serious expression, Dr. Cruise said, “Stay one of you with Henry and then let’s go to another place to discuss his condition. ”
Ms. Kosslyn wanted to know Henry’s condition, but she was worried about Henry.
“I’ll stay here with Henry,” Mr. Mysterious said gently. “Don’t worry. I can take good care of him.”
After his statement, Dr. Cruise and Mr. Mysterious exchanged glances.
“Alright,” Dr. Cruise said with a nod, then turned to the others. “The rest of you, please come with me.”
Ms. Kosslyn led Dr. Cruise, Estelle, and Rebecca to her office, closing the door behind them.
“Currently, Henry is not in good condition,” Dr. Cruise stated while taking out his notebook and reviewing his notes. Letting out a deep sigh, he continued, “The death of his mother had a significant impact on him. Additionally, he has other medical conditions. I tried to ask him about his illnesses for a long time, but he refused to disclose any information. Do any of you happen to know about his medical condition?”
Ms. Kosslyn was stunned. “Does he have other diseases? I don’t know about it…”
“I’m aware of it,” Estelle replied. “He has congenital heart disease. His mother worked three jobs and toiled tirelessly every day to cover his high medical expenses. Perhaps due to this, her health deteriorated, and she passed away prematurely.”
“Oh my God…” Ms. Kosslyn gasped in surprise.
Compared to her, Dr. Cruise was not that surprised.
Upon hearing Estelle’s explanation, Dr. Cruise nodded and calmly responded, “It confirms my suspicions. Currently, Henry is dealing with depression, and he has shown suicidal tendencies, which is very concerning. I will prescribe some medication for him, but there’s a challenge. Being young, he might resist taking the medicine. In such situations, it’s essential to be patient while persuading him and avoid forcing him.”
Ms. Kosslyn nodded repeatedly and said, “Okay, okay. I’ll be patient and make sure he will take medicine regularly.”
“And there’s one more thing that is even more dangerous…” Dr. Cruise hesitated for a moment. “I’ve observed that Henry has developed a split personality due to the significant trauma he experienced.”
Hearing this, all the others present were shocked.
“A split personality? I’ve only seen this term in fictional novels. It turns out that it exists!” Rebecca exclaimed.
Dr. Cruise nodded. “Yes, it does exist. When people suffer a big blow and can’t accept it, their self-protection mechanism will be activated. And the split personality is one of the manifestations of self-protection. According to the records in the history of modern medicine, a person had more than three hundred personalities at the same time. But this case is an extreme example. Henry won’t be like this. He only has two personalities.”
“What is Henry like when he’s in his secondary personality?” Rebecca asked anxiously. “In the fictional novels I’ve read, a man in his secondary personality behaved like a little girl. Will Henry be like this?”
“No,” Dr. Cruise replied. “When Henry is in his secondary personality, he is still himself, to be precise, the way he was two months ago when his mother was alive. During our conversation, I could clearly sense the fluctuations in his emotions. At times, he would be very composed and optimistic, mentioning how his mother worked diligently as a cleaner in the hospital, and he wanted to sing for her after her shift. On other occasions, he would become very despondent, aware of his mother’s passing and expressing the desire to go and see her.”
The situation he described was so unbelievable that all the others fell silent.
After a long silence, Rebecca asked, “Dr. Cruise, he is happier when he is in his secondary personality. Does it mean it will be best if he can always live with this personality?”
“Theoretically speaking, yes. An ideal situation is that his secondary personality can maintain from now to his adulthood. As time goes by, the pain of losing his mother will slowly fade away in his subconscious mind, and he will be mentally mature. And when he grows up, even if he returns to his original personality, he will be in a healthy mental state. But when the secondary personality will appear and how long it will maintain are uncontrollable. It depends on luck,” Dr. Cruise informed.
Upon hearing this, the others realized that the ideal scenario was highly improbable, and someone couldn’t help but let out a heavy sigh.
“Actually, we don’t need to be so pessimistic,” Dr. Cruise suddenly interjected. “I used to believe it was impossible to cure a patient with a split personality. However, not long ago, I treated a patient similar to Henry. He also experienced a significant event in his life and developed a split personality. When he’s in his secondary personality, he reverts to the way he used to be before the event occurred.”
Estelle’s eyes lit up with hope, and she asked eagerly, “Dr. Cruise, how is the patient doing now?”
“He seems to be doing well,” Dr. Cruise replied. “Perhaps he has regained the presence of the most important person he lost before and is in a better mental state. As a result, he hasn’t visited me in a long time. I hope things continue to go well for him in the future.”
“Then… Is he living primarily in his first personality or the secondary personality? Or do the two personalities alternate with each other?” Estelle inquired further.
“It’s been a while since he last visited me. However, from what I know, he has fully recovered his first personality but retains the memories of what happened during his secondary personality. He has come to terms with the unchangeable reality. I believe he has found peace with himself,” Dr. Cruise explained.
After a pause, he added, “This is an ideal state for him. It will be best if he can keep on like this for the rest of his life. If he loses his beloved one again, I’m afraid his condition will be much worse than that of Henry.”
