“Give him to me, my female.” His voice beckons me as the shore beckons the sea to succumb. A slow soft tone emerges from his throat to linger in the depths of my mind, large lustrous emeralds rise to meet mine.
Kal propels forward in my arms screeching with irritation struggling to free himself from my bounds to get to his father who stands shoulder-deep in the river. My eyes peer inside scanning its depth and I shake my head in denial once more.
“I do not think this is a good idea, Deimos,” I utter whilst taking an uneasy step backwards. “It is too deep. I do think the temperature of the water is not right for him. He could drown or get sick, he is still vulnerable.” My heart pounds in fear as my mind brings forth pictures of potential disasters.
“Trust me.” He mutters offering me a nod of encouragement. Hands raised he waits for me to hand over our excited male.
“I do trust you, it is this male I hold I do not trust. He is too aggressive with his eagerness to discover new things.” A flash of fang is delivered to the naughty male who refuses to keep still in my arms yet he pays no heed to my act of reprimanding. His eyes and attention belong to his father only.
“I learnt the soothing touch of the waters when I was around six months, Kal is almost nine. He shall love this.” He says whilst Kal’s tiny fists begin to push at my chest with defiance of my antics, he demands to be released at once.
Deimos had been talking about this for the past few weeks, saying Kal should begin his training as early as possible for there are countless strengths it possesses. I had agreed but a mother’s fear is quite unfathomable. Pups usually learn to swim by the age of two, Kal is not even a year old yet. I refuse to put him in dangerous situations knowingly.
“How shall you teach him?”
“Exactly how we teach the other pups. He shall learn to float first. Kal, come.” The second our male hears his father playfully beckon him, he leaps out of my clutch with no warning or hesitation as a piercing scream tears out my mouth for I lose my hold of him and he falls freely into the water.
My heart rages with my difficulty to breathe for it happens in a short span of seconds where large palms catch the falling male swiftly holding him above water with ease. Deimos’s chest heaves, eyes widened for he hadn’t expected it as well. Placing my palm upon my chest trying to ease my palpitating heart does not help to calm the sense of sudden fright Kal evoked.
“Kal.” A booming snarl of anger entangles from Deimos’s lips vibrating through his chest to correct the little one. A warning of disapproval to what he just did.
Kal flinches widened doe greens meet his father’s to the raise of his voice. He understands emotions and speaks through them. A few seconds pass for his lips to quiver, eyes well with tears as his mouth opens wide to release upset wails clenching his tiny fists in reaction to Deimos’s response.
No comfort comes from neither Deimos nor me. We watch him bawl until his cheeks swell and turn red. This is his punishment, no comfort shall be offered.
We stay patiently keeping our eyes on him, waiting for him to calm by himself. Wolves are taught to spank the little ones after they reach a certain age yet Deimos and I concluded we shall never raise our hands on our pup ever. Perhaps during his training Kal would face painful hurdles but he would never experience the raps of submission from his father.
Our male turns his head towards Deimos nudging his nose and cheek onto his father’s wet chest. He breathes in his scent seeking comfort by himself calming until cries turn to hiccups.
“He did good, did he not?” Deimos questions softly alluring emeralds scanning the beauty of his male, right thumb wiping away tears from his plump cheek.
“Yes, he did. He learns fast.” I sigh whilst taking a seat by the river upon the grass. It is hard to reprimand him and watch him cry yet this is the best way to train and teach him right from wrong.
“Watch us, my female,” Deimos mutters whilst relaxing his hold on our male taking him down to the calm waters. Kal’s eyes broaden to the new feelings that are inflicted upon his bare flesh, yet he remains collected not protesting whilst his father introduces him to the water.
He is aware of its presence as I bathe him every night, but there is a difference as his senses are absorbing the true essence of nature. The smell, taste, and overwhelming feeling of freedom and tranquillity of her waters cannot be compared.
Deimos then turns Kal swiftly belly down plunging deep taking him beneath the water. Fear is once again quick to drag its wretched nails across my flesh to what my eyes witness. Painfully long seconds pass as Deimos dives up allowing his male to regain his breath.
Emeralds sink into Kal’s waiting for his reaction. Pups primarily possess two main reactions to this training, they love it or they detest it. We wait for him to wail to show his displeasure but nothing comes.
He looks up at his father drenched with his arms and legs flailing then he peers up at me to offer a gleaming toothless smile. He loves it. I offer him a grin of encouragement whilst Deimos laughs in contentedness proud of him whilst lifting his male above his head. Kal squeals in delight, eyes observing his surroundings. He takes in the river, the trees, the sky and the fresh pastures I sit upon.
“How was he down there?” I question lifting the hem of my long skirt to bare my flesh. It is quite hot today, despite the sun bleeding to night.
“He remained in my arms calmly, he was not scared. Curious little one he truly is.” Deimos chuckles whilst tickling Kal’s full belly.
“That is a relief for if it were different it would have been difficult to train him with his defiant personality,” I mutter. Our male is one of the most stubborn and smart pups in our pack, it gets hard to control him but he is never disobedient.
“Indeed. Perhaps this would be his place of comfort. I did not like the water when I was a pup so I never sought comfort here. But he likes it, he shall seek it.” Deimos replies with enthusiasm.
“What will you do now?” I ask with curiosity. In the past in my pack, we did not teach pups to swim for the water was seen as something dangerous for them as we lost many lives, the cause being drowning. We could have taught them to swim to reduce the risk of drowning yet the wolves wished for the entire riverside to be shut for pups. They were allowed to enter after they became a juvenile.
“I shall teach him to float.” I watch as Deimos places his right palm beneath Kal’s head and neck and the other beneath his bum holding him over the soft waves. He begins to move backwards taking Kal with him.
