Her head bangs with pain as she tries to open her eyes, and she closes them back again. Her whole body feels so weak and she finds it difficult to move any part of her body. Like a movie, the incident of the earlier moment replays in her head and she forces her eyes open, only to find herself in a strange room.
“Where am I?” Still lying on the bed and staring at the place strangely, she asks herself in a whisper. Is she dead? This place doesn’t look like the heaven she has always heard about, so where the hell is she? Those are the questions that keep running through her mind as she stares at the place in confusion.
“What were you doing outside at that time?” A cold masculine voice emerges from the dark, sending a chilled sensation to her body, as her heart misses a beat. That’s the voice she will always recognize even in her deep sleep. It’s alpha Damien.
At this point, her weakness has already been drained and represented by fear. She quickly sits up on the bed and tilted her head in the direction where the voice had come from, her heart sinks into her stomach as his deadly gaze welcomes her.
Gulping down the sudden lump that formed in her throat, she opens her mouth to talk but words fail her. How is she supposed to find her voice when his gaze is all over her? She only stares for two seconds and turns her gaze away. But, how did she get here in the first place? She remembers being in the woods to get some fresh air, and she lost her way later which almost landed her in trouble, but how come she end up here? As much as she wants to ask him that, she tries to compose herself and let go of the question, knowing what might happen if she dares to ask him that.
“I asked a question,” his domineering voice sounds through her ears again. His voice is calm and smooth, but only a dumb person will not feel the intensity of the dark and intimidating aura, accompanying the calmness in his voice. Although she’s not looking at him, she can feel his gaze all over her and it’s driving her crazy.
“My… my lord…” She pauses and purses her lips. She has no idea what to say. She can’t possibly tell him that she went out to get fresh air, right? That’ll only put her in trouble. Maybe telling him a lie will save her from this mess.
“Don’t you dare lie to me. You won’t like the outcome of it,” his voice echoes in her head, and she gulps down nothing. Did he just speak in her head and is it just her imagination? Maybe it was her imagination.
Not knowing what to say, she drops her head down and fondles with her fingers. This is the most awkward moment of her life. Wishing that he leaves her alone now is the only thing on her mind, but how will she possibly ask him to leave her alone? That will be as good as signing her death wish.
“How dare you sneak out of the house! Were you trying to escape? How dare you!” For the first time since she woke up, he finally raises his voice at her and she flinches as fear grips her. The Alpha is angry, and of course, she knows what that means.
“No… no my lord… I… I wasn’t trying to escape…” She quickly stands up from the bed and falls to her knees. She may be dramatic right now, but it seems like that’s the only way to save herself. She can’t possibly allow him to get angrier than this.
“And what makes you think that I will believe that?” His dry scoff brushes her ears, and she gulps down nothing nervously. How can she possibly escape? Where does she have to go from here? Her father already sold her and never treated her as his child, going out from here is more dangerous than staying here. She can’t afford to go to the street and strive to survive. She won’t be safe and maybe alpha Damien will then be after her life for escaping. That’s as good as jumping from frying pan to fire.
“Yo… you… you have to believe me, my lord. I… I dare not do that,” she shakes her head vigorously, sincerity resounding in her quivering voice. Although alpha Damien knew that she didn’t try to escape, he was just scolding her.
For the next two minutes, he only stares down at her with so much running through his mind. Flashing back to the previous day, he reclines on the chair he has been sitting on. The black wolf was about to attack Cassie earlier, but it was a good thing that he was there early enough to save her from being killed. If she was not crucial to him, he wouldn’t have done that. Why would he save a commoner?
Who is he? Why is he after her life? Those are the questions he keeps asking himself as he stares down at her. The scent of the wolf from the previous day isn’t familiar to him and he feels weird about it.
“What happened back there? Tell me, now!” He commands her, and she bit her bottom lip. Maybe telling the truth won’t harm as she thought.
“I… I… I couldn’t sleep last night, so I went to the woods to… to get some fresh air…” She stutters, the sudden urge to check his facial expression rushes through her, but she dares not raise her gaze to look at him.
“I suddenly lost my way, and… and… and that was all I remember,” she confesses. She didn’t tell him the part that the wolf came, she don’t know how to explain that to him.
For five minutes, an awkward silence assumes the room and she anticipates what he’s going to say next.
“You’ll be staying in the royal castle henceforth,” he finally releases the bombshell to her, and her eyes widen in shock…
