As Dulcina Calvo’s teary eyes stared at Esteban Zaragosa, there was no way for him to tell her that her baby was missing.
“The Dulcina … she’s fine, you don’t have to worry.”
Until Dulcina Calvo’s body recovers, Esteban Zaragosa intends to keep the secret until death.
Dulcina Calvo’s gaunt, pale face lit up with a smile when she received the affirmative answer, “I knew it, our baby will be safe and sound.”
Esteban Zaragosa took Dulcina Calvo in his arms and said softly, “I’m sorry I didn’t protect you.”
“How could you guess something like that, plus a lot must have happened during the time I was in a coma?”
Esteban Zaragosa said that he and Orlondo Marta had quarreled, Orlondo Marta was his legitimate father after all, and Dulcina Calvo knew it must be hard on his heart.
“I really didn’t think old Orlondo Marta was so bad, Esteban Zaragosa, even though you had a fight with your righteous father, you have me and the baby.”
Dulcina Calvo said, her warm little hand took the man’s big one and pressed it against her flat little belly.
Esteban Zaragosa’s dark eyes looked at her with deep concentration, his heart ached for Dulcina knowing how sad she would be if her baby disappeared.
Esteban Zaragosa forced a smile and curved his lips, pulling the slender girl tighter into his arms. “You are enough, as long as you are safe by my side, I am content.”
Dulcina Calvo lifted her small face slightly, “If you are sad, you must tell me, I can share it with you too.”
“I’m not sad, you don’t know how happy I am that you woke up this time.”
Dulcina Calvo leaned on her arms and stretched with both arms, “How long was I asleep, why do I feel so soft from sleep?”
“You’ve been asleep for like half a month. I’m going to go crazy if you don’t wake up.”
Dulcina Calvo let out a giggle and said, “But if you go crazy and no one saves me, I’ll be even more unable to wake up.”
He thought that when Dulcina Calvo woke up, she would blame him, hate him and break up with him, but when Dulcina Calvo woke up, she comforted him instead.
This made Esteban Zaragosa feel even worse.
“Dulcina.”
“Hmm?”
Esteban Zaragosa took her by the arm and drew her into his embrace as if she were a precious treasure, and he buried himself in the warmth of the girl’s neck and said softly, “When I’m done with this, I’ll take you back to La Ciudad Santa and never leave you again. If you like children, we’ll have lots of them, and if you want to eat sauerkraut, I’ll make you sauerkraut every day, okay?”.
Dulcina Calvo froze, as if she hadn’t expected Esteban Zaragosa to give up his career for her, and the little girl lifted her little face to look at him hesitantly, “But won’t you be unhappy if you give up the career you like? I don’t want you to be unhappy because of me.”
Who loved this dangerous career of licking blood at gunpoint? He hadn’t been free before, but now, Orlondo Marta’s forces had been dismantled and now he was only temporarily acting as the head of the Ming Organization, a Court Lord position that he could fill whoever he wanted, he just wanted to live a quiet life as a normal person with his girl.
Esteban Zaragosa looked at her lovingly, his large hand gently caressing her small face as he said, “I can still remain a doctor without this. I’d be a bastard if I made you wait and worry about me all the time. In my life, the profession I love most is responsible for making you happy.”
Dulcina Calvo was indefatigable, tears welling up in her eyes.
“Esteban Zaragosa why are you so kind to me? You’re going to spoil me.”
Dulcina Calvo clenched her small fist and wiped the tears from her eyes.
Esteban Zaragosa looked down and kissed her, “Pampering you is the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
Dulcina Calvo was about to say something melodramatic in response, but her stomach was already roaring uncontrollably.
The girl’s face flushed with embarrassment, “I haven’t eaten for days and I’m so hungry I could eat a cow.”
Esteban Zaragosa had sent a lot of food, all Dulcina Calvo’s favorites, but Dulcina Calvo hadn’t eaten for many days, and although she had a good appetite, Esteban Zaragosa wouldn’t let her eat too much fatty food.
Mainly, she ate a lot of lean porridge with green vegetables.
Once Dulcina Calvo had eaten and drunk enough, she lay back down on the hospital bed, her watery eyes turned to her surroundings, and curiously she couldn’t help but ask, “Esteban Zaragosa, where are we?”
“Z.”
Dulcina Calvo’s eyes widened slightly, “Country Z? How did we end up in Country Z? Is Country Z your home country?”
“It used to be, but now, not anymore. Wherever you are now, that’s where I’m from.”
Dulcina Calvo let out a giggle, her face slightly flushed. “Seems to me you’re talking about love this time after all the time I’ve been sleeping, so I guess I wasn’t in a coma for nothing.”
Esteban Zaragosa raised his hand and slapped him on the forehead.
“Why are you hitting me?”
“Do you know how worried I’ve been all this time? If you fall into a coma like this again, I won’t hurry up and hug you and martyr myself.”
Dulcina Calvo looked up at him with a sweet smile, stars twinkling in her clear crescent moon pupils, but her mouth was deliberately spiteful, “I could have saved my life again, but then you would have died with me in your arms.”
Esteban Zaragosa’s dark eyes stared at her for a long moment before she finally laughed at him, “Well, I wouldn’t want you to die like that.”
He took her warm, cold hand and tucked it under the sheets. “You just woke up, your body will take time to recover, so stop talking and get some sleep.”
Esteban Zaragosa tucked her in and then turned to pour her a cup of hot water when the small hand peeking out from under the sheets grabbed her fingers.
Esteban Zaragosa looked back and saw the little girl’s eyes looking up at him with a hint of resignation.
“What’s wrong?”
“Esteban Zaragosa, I have been in a coma for many days and I have been dreaming almost every day, I have had many nightmares.”
Esteban Zaragosa sat back down, touched her forehead with his large hand and asked in a soft whisper, “What dreams, about me?”
Dulcina Calvo nodded and let out a muffled “mmm.” “I dreamed that I saw you by my bedside, that I called you but you couldn’t hear me, that I wanted to come up and hug you but my body was transparent and I couldn’t hug you, I thought it was real and I cried for a long, long time.”
Esteban Zaragosa’s heart suddenly ached, he touched her little face and said, “I will finish my business at Z as soon as possible and then we will go and take a good rest.”
And then, after a while, we will have a baby.
When we have a second child, we’ll tell him about the loss of the first, and maybe then he’ll get too upset and be less sad.
Dulcina Calvo frowned slightly and asked curiously, “The man who brought the food just now, why did you call him Master of the Court?”
“A sesquipedalian little civil servant, which I will resign when you are well and we return to The Holy City.”
Dulcina Calvo, who had always trusted Esteban Zaragosa, believed what he said and did not hesitate any longer, she just put her arms around him and nodded, “Well, I’m sleepy again, I’m going to take a nap, don’t go.”
“Okay, I won’t leave, I’ll watch you sleep.”
Esteban Zaragosa looked at the girl’s calm, sweet face as she slept, and the regret and guilt in his heart grew stronger and stronger. But now, after a serious illness, even the originally white and red complexion is a little dull, the skin is paler, but the appearance is not as energetic as before.
Before, Dulcina Calvo, who had been sleeping for so many days, was absolutely full of energy and would start stirring within minutes of being in bed, but today, after she had eaten, she felt sleepy again within minutes, and was really much weaker.
But it was good that she was awake, it was okay to be weak, and he had the patience and confidence to take better care of her than ever.
The days ahead would be long and they would both be fine.
