Chapter 79 Her betrothed
MIDNIGHT PACK: CLARK’S HOME
Alice paced the room back and forth, feeling uncomfortable and a dark sensation keeps hovering over her thoughts as she moved around. Anna heaved a sigh as she sipped from the cup she had in hand.
“You should have some green tea baby. It would help relax your mind.” Anna offered.
Alice threw her head back in frustration and she let out a loud groan. “There is no way I can keep calm mom. I know what Jovy’s father is capable of and I can affirm it to you that they are about to do something cruel to Jovy’s future. My wolf’s instinct is never wrong.”
“I really wish there is a way for me to help, but it’s not in my place to interfere.”
Alice walked up to her mother and knelt down in front of her. “You can still do something mom. You have just about enough resources. You can adopt her.”
Anna sighed. “This isn’t the human world baby. Here we don’t question parents and what they do with their children especially when the Alpha is involved. Yeah, there are laws that can be followed through, but at the same time it’s really not my place. Moreover, Jovy isn’t here yet. Let her return first.”
Alice sniffed, as she plopped herself on the floor. Her heart felt heavy, there is no way she could explain it to her mother that would be understandable. No one had any idea of how wicked and uncaring Jovy’s father was. She knew if Tommy Finlay could sell Jovy off, he would definitely do so without a second thought.
Guilt saddled her thoughts as she kept on blaming herself for dragging Jovy into the mess she was in now. Tommy would have been just his usual self with her and have no intention of giving her any punishment outside their home.
“Be positive my dear.” Anna pat Alice’s shoulder.
Alice jolted from her thoughts. “Was I loud?”
Anna nodded her head. “Clearly.”
Alice let out a long breath. “I don’t know what I would do to myself if Jovy gets hurt again mom. She has been enduring a whole lot and this might get too much for her. I doubt if I would ever forgive myself.”
“You would have to forgive yourself. You know sometimes whatever happens to us or those around us is never our fault. Most times, you need to let fate and nature takes its course in our journey through life. There is no way to take charge of something out of your control. Remember you only took her to the party there was no way you would have known she would meet someone who would make her act different. Let’s not conclude yet though, just wait it out.”
Alice closed her eyes as she rested her head on her mother’s laps. The unsettling feeling still resting inside of her. The sound of the doorbell made Alice stand up in a hurry and she ran towards the door. When Alice opened it, she almost collapsed in relief as standing by the door was Jovy with an odd look on her face.
“How are you?” Alice inquired, checking out her friend’s body to find out if she has any bruise on her.
Jovy smiled widely as she hugged her friend tightly. “I am very fine, Alice. Let’s go in.”
“Jovy!” Mira stood up to hug her. “We were so worried about you.”
“I’m fine.” She replied.
“Come sit.” Alice pulled at her hand and led her to the couch. “Tell us everything.”
And Jovy told them everything, not leaving a stone unturned and both Anna and Alice stared in wide shock.
“This has got to be a joke!” Alice blurted out as anger surged through her.
“Calm down Alice.” Jovy said in excitement. “It gets better, guess who I got betrothed to?”
Alice raised an eyebrow. She was beginning to doubt her friend’s sanity. She couldn’t believe her friend seem to be too comfortable with the situation on ground.
“Who?” Anna decided to indulge her.
“Logan!” She announced.
The whole room fell silent and the sound of a pin drop would have been excessively loud.
“So, he is the Alpha of Mystic Shadows Fortress!” Anna gasped out.
Alice scoffed. “Wait a sec…what’s there to be happy about?”
Jovy’s smile fell almost immediately at her words. “Aren’t you glad he is at least someone familiar?”
Shutting her eyes tightly, Alice tried to stop the tears from rolling down her face but she couldn’t control it. A tear slipped down her right cheek which she wiped immediately. She was certain now that Jovy needed to be checked in the head. She was definitely losing it.
“Please tell me this news didn’t get you excited? Because it is him?” Alice uttered.
“What are you talking about?” Confusion spread out on Jovy’s face.
“Mom! Why aren’t you saying anything?!” Alice screamed.
Anna stood up from her seat and only excused herself. “I think I would leave the both of you to it.”
Alice stared with her mouth agape at how swiftly her mother tried to excuse herself. She cussed silently. Jovy gave her best friend a doubtful look uncertain of what she was talking about. It’s already sad enough that she was being married off but getting married to someone who is a bit familiar should be relieving.
“Alice, did you hear all that I said?”
Alice couldn’t hold back her tears anymore. “You just told me your father and the pack sold you off in a bid to save themselves from whatever it is and you are trying to seek a positive light from it and all you have to keep insisting on is you being happy about Logan?” She hiccuped. “Do you even know what this means? It means your life here is practically over and you don’t even know what awaits you there.”
“I know! I know! But have you stopped to think how miserable my life is right now?” Jovy wailed.
Heaving as the tears stayed heavy on her eyes, Alice sat at the edge of the couch gripping it tightly. She eventually got a hang of what was happening. Blood flowed through her ears and she doesn’t want to believe they are going through the dark tunnel at the moment. Their lives looked okay just few hours ago and it all came crashing down within a minute.
Alice wiped off the tears in her eyes as she sat next to Jovy who was bent on the floor staring into space. She pulled her into a tight embrace.”We would find a way around this, huh?” Alice said, but she didn’t sound convincing.
Jovy sniffed. “I was just trying to be positive, but if he was the one always being talked about then maybe I am in for a hellhole. But the best thing I can do is try to survive through it, maybe there would be some hope one day.”
The tears flowed with no caution as Alice still kept her grip on Jovy. This was the time she wished Jovy had a proper wolf and could run as far as her legs could carry. But being a latent wolf practically means weakness and there is a limit to how far she would be able to go.
Jovy felt her heart constrict at the mere thought of it all, her life was crumbling right in front of her and there is nothing she can do to it. Her father who owned her life already made a decision as to where she would end her life. She tried to be optimistic with the thought that Logan might end up falling in love with her and maybe his heart would melt to her charm.
Jovy leaned further into her friend as the tears kept coming. She had a feeling something huge was coming her way and it definitely won’t be an easy one.
