He wanted to know whether she would go back to him.
Even though Hunter did not specifically mention a person’s name, Emily knew who he meant.
She stared at his face, but Eldest Young Master Jackson’s eyes were still closed. His eyelids did not even twitch.
Emily had no hesitation, nor did she wonder about the person he meant. She was surprised by that conversation. How long had they not spoken to each other like that?
Their communication had only been in the biblical sense each time they were together for the past month.
They interacted, but they had not communicated with each other.
She was not sure if he had fallen asleep, or he waited for her answer. Another moment passed before Emily quietly said, “He wouldn’t want me back anymore.”
“What if he does?” That question was a little over the line—she was still with him at that moment, would he want her to tell the truth or lie to him?
However, Emily already had an answer, and she had no plans to lie to him.
“I’ll be on my own.”
That was a genuine answer, regardless if he liked it or not.
She did not expect Hunter to nod and grunted a reply. “Hmm”
That man!
More silence followed their conversation.
It might have been quiet, but it was also calm and peaceful.
Hunter fell asleep soon after that. His breathing calmed, and Emily could even detect light snores from him. That man would only snore when he was exhausted.
When she was sure that he was in a deep sleep, Emily lifted his head gently to rest on a real pillow. However, the moment she moved his head, he seemed to be gripped in a nightmare. He turned his body and hugged her tightly. He even buried his head into her stomach.
“Don’t leave me!”
Emily kept silent; she did not even dare to move a muscle. Moments after that, Hunter fell back into a deep sleep and continued to snore lightly. It was a rare sight to see him sleep so deeply.
She decided to ignore his outburst. She did not want to overthink it; it could turn into nothing but despair.
When Hunter woke up the next morning, his head was still pillowed on her lap.
His movements startled Emily awake. When Hunter got up, Emily felt as if she missed the warmth that had been on her lap during the night.
“What are you doing here?” Hunter sat up and stared at her coldly. It had only been a night, and Eldest Young Master Jackson had reverted to his usual self. There was not much warmth in his eyes when he looked at her.
“Nothing.” Emily almost rolled her eyes.
Was it because he had too much to drink that he did not remember anything from the previous night, or did he do it on purpose? It did not matter; it was meaningless to reason with him.
She crawled off the bed. However, her legs were so numb that she lost her balance when they touched the floor, and she fell with a thud.
Hunter witnessed her fall with coldness; he did not even help her up. He did not even consider the reason her legs were numb.
What utter ungratefulness!
She struggled to get up, and then she made her way toward the door. One should not be in Eldest Young Master Jackson’s room for no reason at all.
When she reached the door, Hunter asked, “When do you finish your exam?”
“Two subjects today, and the final three tomorrow.”
“Finish whatever you need to do after your exam, and then take a trip to City L with me this Saturday.”
Emily was a little stunned, so she turned around and asked him, “City L?”
The old gentleman’s warm face suddenly emerged from the depth of her mind. She wondered how Old Master Gale had been since she last saw him about a month before that.
She nodded. As she was about to exit the room, she could not help but ask, “What are we doing in City L?”
“Who are you to ask that?” The man raised his eyebrows in annoyance. Every bit of the tenderness that he had shown the previous night had vanished.
Emily grunted and then proceeded to open the door. She knew she should not fantasize about the man; nothing good could come out of that.
‘I won’t ask then, what’s the big deal?’ As she walked out of the room, the voice that all women adored spoke again. “The Gale family is acknowledging their only granddaughter. They’re having a banquet this Saturday to announce the news to the public.”
The Gale family’s granddaughter… Wendy…
Emily’s fingers trembled with the sudden shock.
“Still not leaving?” He wanted her to leave. However, Emily was not angry; she had no energy to be mad at him.
She stepped out of his room. She felt a little lost, and she made her way back to her room step by step.
The Gale family’s granddaughter… She had kept that issue at the back of her mind because of Hunter. She thought she could wait until her three months were up with the man before investigating Wendy’s claim. She forgot that others would still make a move even when she had been idle.
City L’s Gale family… Wendy… Kate… Sally… All of those issues popped into her mind, and it was chaotic.
When he was sure that Emily was back in her room, Liam knocked to Eldest Young Master Jackson’s door and went into the room.
“Eldest Young Master, this is the information that you wanted.” He placed a document folder on his table, and his face looked incredibly gloomy.
“When Old Madam Jackson’s accident happened, the man in the picture was really Calvin Gale.”
…
Emily did not have anything to do after she had her last paper on Wednesday, she went to visit Sally at the hospital. Things were the same in September Media, and if they wanted to communicate, they would do that online.
They arrived early in City L on Thursday. Eldest Young Master Jackson had a business discussion with Eldest Young Master Gale, so he met up with him as soon as they arrived at City L.
Hunter did not limit Emily’s freedom, but he did leave Ewan with her—he was there to watch her.
That afternoon, Emily left the hotel and took a stroll at the nearby commercial areas. Ewan trailed behind her, but they did not have any interaction for the whole afternoon. He did not even say a word to her.
Emily knew that Ewan disliked her because of Wendy—he probably liked Wendy. However, that did not come as a surprise. Wendy knew how to win men’s hearts; most men would love her.
When she was tired, she sat on a stone bench on the street side as she sipped the hot milk tea that she had just bought.
Not far away, a luxurious car in a low-profile color screeched to a halt at the side of the street.
“Do you see her? I’m not mistaken, right? Milo, take a look now!”
Old Master Gale did not wait for Milo’s answer, and he anxiously pushed open the car door and got out of the vehicle. He quickly made his way toward the young lady on the stone bench. Milo promptly got out of the car and chased after him.
“Old Master, please wait for me! Don’t run too fast; be careful not to fall!”
“Get out of here! An old fart like you might fall, but I’m still tough!”
Old Master Gale ran so quickly that he almost flew. He made a beeline for Emily, and when he reached her, he grabbed her shoulders.
“Emily! It really is Emily! Goodness, me! What brought you here?”
