Chapter 380 Things Are So Odd

Book:My Most Precious Wife Published:2024-5-1

‘Don’t do it! Don’t you do it! No!’
Emily sat up abruptly, her face and forehead were covered in cold sweats. She saw a cold and solemn face when she opened her eyes, but she could see him clearly. She still saw the face that had turned grey after they had been poisoned and the pair of lifeless eyes.
“Argh!” She wanted to run away in fear.
“Don’t move!” Hunter held her shoulders; one of his hands slid down to restrain her arm connected to the drip.
“Don’t do this! Don’t! Don’t you do it!” Emily used all her might to struggle, but he held her tightly in his arms—she could hurt herself if she continued to toss around.
Emily had no idea who had restrained her, but she knew that Sarah was dying!
No, Sarah was dead, she was already dead, and her lifeless eyes had stared at her!
“No… No! Mmm…” She lowered her head abruptly and bit the person’s arm. She only wanted him to let her go! However, he would not loosen his arms. Even though she had sunk her teeth into his arm, and blood had started to ooze, he would not let her go.
Soon, Emily tasted blood in her mouth; its metallic taste touched her lips and teeth. She was so stunned that she slowly loosen her bite.
When she raised her head, she could no longer see the lifeless eyes. Instead, she saw Hunter’s cold and gentle expression.
She did not know what was in her mind. When she saw his face, she could not remember anything at all. So she wrapped her arms around his neck—she was terrified. She thought she had seen her savior.
No, he WAS her savior.
She had gone through so much, and the person she had wanted to see each time she was in a dire situation had always been him.
“Hunter…”
Hunter did not speak but gently held her in his arms. His arm continued to bleed, but he did not even flinch. He could only feel that everything was real when there was pain involved. At least she would look to him for protection when she was scared.
She had hugged him on her own initiative.
Something tugged at his heart when she hugged him. He could have pushed her away and warned her off with his cold attitude. However, he said nothing to reject her.
After a while, Emily recollected herself. She felt as if she had woken up from a nightmare. She could still taste the blood in her mouth. She blinked a few times before she remembered why she had the taste.
She pushed him away before she saw the crimson patch on his arm.
“I’m sorry, Eldest Young Master Jackson, I didn’t mean to do that!” She panicked; she could not believe that she had bitten him!
Hunter noticed the way she had addressed him. She had called him ‘Hunter’, and then it was ‘Eldest Young Master Jackson’.
The gentleness in his eyes gradually disappeared.
“You’ll pay for my injury next time!” Hunter stood up from the bed as he glanced at the wound on his arm before he looked away nonchalantly.
Emily was still uneasy about it, but she said, “Eldest Young Master Jackson, should we get Peter to look at your wound?”
A wound like that would require a jab, at least.
“Nosy!” Hunter showed his annoyance.
Emily was still upset, so she hugged her knees as we sat on the bed. She did not want to worry about such things.
She kept her eyes ahead and quietly asked, “Sarah… Is she gone?”
Hunter did not answer her. Instead, he asked, “What happened in the cave? What happened yesterday?”
It had only been the next day.
Emily turned her head to look out the glass window—it was a sunny day outside.
Sarah was gone, but how many storms had she stirred when she left the way she did?
“She brought me to the old madam’s quarters and begged to ask you to stop with the dig.”
“Who does she think you are to stop me?” Hunter snorted coldly. However, as soon as he said that, he heard the childishness in his words. Would he change his mind had she begged him? Perhaps not.
Emily did not pay attention to his cynicism; she had gotten used to how he spoke after she had spent the past few days with him. He took his anger out on her because he was still angry. She did not dislike the childish way he had vented.
At least the childish Eldest Young Master Jackson was a real person; he was always childish when he was angry.
“What is that look on your face?” Hunter was a little unhappy—did she make fun of him?
Emily looked at him and shook her head.
“I feel cold inside; I don’t think I’ll have any expression on my face.” She felt a little lost, so her face would lack any expression.
Hunter was irritated because of that little fact.
She paid no heed to his annoyance and said, “I did not agree to her request, and in a fight, my head knocked against the table, and then I fainted. When I woke up, we were already on the island, and I saw her writing her suicide note.”
“She explained everything—that she killed Grandmother and why she did it,” Hunter said.
Emily’s heart pounded. “She…told you the reason she killed Grandmother?”
Hunter did not know why she was so surprised, but he nodded.
“But we decided not to pursue the issue, so we won’t find out who the guy was.”
“She wrote about her…affair in the letter?” That was out of Emily’s expectation.
Sarah admitted that she killed the old madam, which was fair, but why did she have to tell her secret? She thought the reason she killed herself was that she did not want her secret exposed. However, she had written everything down on a piece of paper! Why did she have to die since she was willing to admit everything? Was it because she did not want to face the consequences if she had stayed alive?
Emily felt that something was still amiss.
There was a sudden knock on the door; Peter had brought a new drip pack.
“Miss Emily, time to replace your drip.” He hung the pack next to the bed as he looked at her.
Emily dismissed her doubts and said, “I’m fine. I don’t think I need the drip.”
Peter looked at Hunter, but he said nothing. So the doctor said, “Then, do you mind if I do a check-up on you?”
“Then…” She looked at Hunter and pouted. “You should take care of Eldest Young Master Jackson’s wound first. Just now, I…” She lowered her eyes. She did not understand why Hunter did not push her away. The injury would not have happened had he pushed her away.
“I bit him just now.”
Only then did Peter notice the wound on Hunter’s arm. It was rare to see that someone could bite him like that.
All the talks of ‘negligence’, and ‘tool in the bed’ …they were nothing but ways he lied to himself.
Peter did his best not to smile and said with a somber tone, “Eldest Young Master, I think I’d better take care of your wound first.”
