Sarah seemed to have written down all the things that she had wanted to say. She put down the pen and paper and then turned around to look at Emily. She still had a disturbing smile on her face.
“She discovered my secret with another man, so how could I not kill her to silence her?”
“What?” Emily was shocked.
Another man… She had betrayed Eldest Master Jackson!
“I don’t understand it either. Rupert has so many women, so why can’t I have another man? How dare she threaten to tell Rupert, and how dare she threaten to kick me out of the Jackson family?”
“You… You went to look for the old madam that day…”
“She was the one who looked for me!”
Sarah stared at Emily and sneered. “She wanted to kick me out of the Jackson family!”
“That’s impossible! The old madam was a kind person; she would have found ways to persuade you. There’s no way she would force you to do that!” Emily did not believe a word she had said—she would not do that. Grandmother could not even scold anyone; how could she force Sarah to leave?
Everyone knew that Rupert had a lot of women outside. Eldest Young Master Jackson and Manson had different mothers, and even Vincent and Porter were born to different mothers as well.
Rupert was a playboy—that was a fact that everyone in the Jackson family knew.
Even though it was wrong for Sarah to have another man, she believed that the old madam would have definitely talked to her, and not chased her away.
“You don’t believe it either, do you?” Sarah laughed; she seemed slightly psychotic. “I did not believe it either, in the beginning. I thought that all I had to do was be frank with her, explain everything, and sincerely repent my sins. I thought that would gain her forgiveness. I even knelt to beg her, and assure her that I would never do it again, but she wouldn’t listen to me. She wanted everyone to know until my reputation is completely destroyed!”
Sarah stared at her, but it was a stare without much hatred. She sneered, “I am Eldest Madam in the Jackson family, and I am highly respected. If this were to spread out, my whole life would be destroyed! By her! What else did you think I could do? What choice did I have? Tell me, Emily!”
She suddenly jumped and grabbed Emily by her collar. “I begged you to stop Eldest Young Master from digging the lake, but you refused. You didn’t even have that bit of mercy for me.”
“How could I agree? You killed the old madam. The score needs to be settled!” Emily did not wish to comment on her affair at all, because if she had been wrong to do that, then Rupert was also to blame.
Rupert had crossed the line, so it was normal if Sarah wanted another man. However, if she were Sarah, she would choose a divorce instead. Even so, it was a personal choice.
However, what she did to the old madam was not something that one could just cover-up, like how they had filled in the lake.
“Would you admit it if Eldest Young Master didn’t start the dig at the lake?” After all, it was her sense of guilt at work.
She had been right to dig up the lake! However, since Sarah had confessed to the murder, they would not need to continue with it.
Emily felt a strange discomfort in her mind, she was not sure what it was, but somehow…something was not quite right.
“I’m ruined, Emily! You’ve ruined me.” Sarah seemed dispirited, and also in despair. She let go of Emily and walked away to sit down at the side. She had a tiny object in her hand, and it looked like a bottle. Her face was dim while she looked at the little bottle. She smiled for a moment, and then she cried.
“What’s that?” Emily panicked; a sense of fear rose in her heart. “Sarah, what do you think you’re doing?”
Sarah turned and looked at her. She smiled in a beautiful and morbid sort of way. “Poison, of course. What else could it be?”
Emily froze. Why would she need poison?
Sarah already stood up and gradually walked closer to her. “It was all your fault, Emily. You were too stubborn. Why did you have to push me to the edge? I’m ruined because of you. I have nothing now, so what do you think I want to do the most right now?”
Emily did not want to guess. She stared defensively at the bottle in Sarah’s hand.
Sarah still had the same smile on her face as she crouched next to her. Emily was not afraid of her as she did not see any viciousness in Sarah’s eyes—she had no plans to kill Emily.
Hence, the bottle of poison…
“Sarah, don’t!”
Sarah stood up and glanced down at her. She smiled as tears trickled down her face.
“I have no way out. You’ve pushed me to this state, what else can I do?”
She removed her glance from Emily and went to the side to gaze at the dark sky. She raised the little bottle.
“Sarah, don’t do it! You have to calm down! There has to be a way out. Death is not the only solution!
“Sarah, Sarah… Listen to me. You still have your son. You have a son!”
“Son…” Her fingers trembled as she kept her eyes on the sky.
It was like she could see Manson’s face in the night sky.
Son, she still had a son.
It was because she had a son that she must die.
She had to die! She had to!
She raised her hand to uncap the bottle. Then, she poured the liquid into her mouth.
“Sarah!” Emily struggled to crawl over to her, but her limbs were tied. She could not even stand up.
“Sarah, call someone, quick! Call an ambulance, Sarah!”
Sarah turned around to look at her melancholically. “Emily, can I ask for a favor from you?”
“No! I don’t want to listen to you, and I won’t agree! You need to call an ambulance now!”
She knew that as soon as Sarah finished what she wanted to say, her life would end! Emily would not agree to that. Perhaps, if she were to stall, Sarah might still be able to make it.
Even though she understood how childish and impossible that thought was, she still did not agree to her request! She could not!
“Quick, call an ambulance, you can still live. If there’s anything you want to do, YOU’LL HAVE TO DO IT YOURSELF! If you turned yourself in, they might commute the sentence. Don’t be like that. You don’t need to! Eldest Madam!”
“I won’t… I can’t turn myself in. I can’t…” Sarah shook her head hard.
Suddenly, she lost her balance, and her body started to sway. Then she fell onto the ground with a loud thud. Black-colored blood flowed from the corner of her mouth. She was in so much pain that her whole body trembled. Then her body started to twitch violently.
“Here… Here’s an island, on…an island. Cell phone… thrown away, nobody, no ambulance, no…”
She went to the island because she knew that there was no way out for her. She would not allow herself to have a way out!
“Emily…, promise me… promise me one thing…”
Sarah gritted her teeth and looked at Emily. Her body still twitched, and her lips shuddered. However, she gritted her teeth through the pain so that she could finish her last words. “My son… He likes you… I know that you don’t like him, but… please… Do show some care toward him, please… Please…”
