If she had a choice, Emily would not want Henry to know about her investigation into the old madam’s case. However, Joe might be in danger. She bit her lower lip and was about to tell him when her phone rang. Emily was flustered, and she took out her cellphone clumsily in a hurry.
It was Joe! She answered hastily, “Joe! Where are you? Are you okay? Is something wrong?”
“I’m okay. I’m with Terry, and we will arrive shortly. Don’t worry.”
There was nothing wrong with Joe’s voice, so Emily was finally relieved.
“It’s good that nothing is wrong. Are you with Terry now? Come back quickly, please.”
After she hung up the phone, Emily turned around and saw many pairs of eyes had stared at her.
She exhaled and said, “He’s alright. He’s with Terry.”
The friends were relieved. Lois said, “Then, let’s go back to the office and wait for them while we work. Shall we?”
“Okay, let’s head back.”
Everyone bid farewell to Henry and turned to walk into the lobby.
Emily was about to turn around too when Henry clasped her wrist. “Come and have a cup of coffee with me.”
“I…” Emily felt guilty. She whispered, “I can’t sleep if I drink coffee at night…”
“Then, have a cup of tea.”
“It’s the same with tea.”
“Then, drink plain water!”
Henry pulled her into the lounge and placed a glass of water in front of her.
“What’s up? Are you not going to tell me the truth? You often run around with Joe these days. What are you both up to?”
Even though Henry’s gaze was gentle, it had a sense of coldness in it. Whenever he put on a stern look, his intense aura was comparable to Eldest Young Master Jackson’s. One would be too used to the kind and tender expression on his face to adapt to the difference that quickly.
“I’m… a little thirsty.” Emily picked up the glass with both of her hands and took two sips.
When she put down the glass, she looked up and saw that Henry still had his eyes locked onto her. He stared at her with his poker face. He looked like he would not let her off before she spilled the beans.
“How long do you want to keep it hidden from me? And how long do you think it would take if I were to find out on my own?”
“I… had doubts about Old Madam Jackson’s death…”
“Didn’t Hunter said that you are not allowed to investigate that? What the hell do you want to do?”
“But I know that there was something odd about the old madam’s death. I can’t just give up and let her die in vain!”
“Then tell me, who do you doubt? And why do you doubt that person?”
Henry stared at her coldly. “You were the only one with her when she died. Who else could you doubt?”
Emily had no response for him as she did not have the answer, either.
“So? You don’t even have a goal. What can you do? Or are you hiding something else from me?”
“I…” Emily hesitated, and when she looked up again, she saw that Henry had already stood in front of her.
He looked at her from top to bottom. Suddenly, she felt pressured.
“Henry…”
“Why can’t you tell me? Don’t you believe me?”
She saw the disappointment in his eyes, and she felt a trace of uneasiness in her heart.
However, could she tell him that she was the old madam’s granddaughter?
It was not that she did not believe him, but things were too complicated and strange. If she were not the party involved, she would find it hard to believe it too. After all, someone had tampered with the DNA information in the hospital database. Who would have the ability to do that? Even Hunter did not believe in her; would Henry believe her?
“I…”
In the end, all she could do was to lower her eyes.
“Since you don’t want to talk about it, there is no point for me to force you.” Henry turned around and walked out of the lounge.
The moment he turned around, Emily felt a strong sense of anxiety. She did not want to lie to him! She would never want to do that! She did not want him to be disappointed with her; she would feel terrible about that.
“Henry—” Suddenly, her stomach churned, and she almost vomited when she opened her mouth.
She wanted to call out to Henry, but he had already walked out of the lounge. She could not even open her mouth to speak. She felt like she wanted to puke…
Emily stood up, but she could not chase after him. Instead, she spun around and went straight into the restroom. Henry had walked very slowly as he thought that she would try to chase after him to explain things to him. It made no sense for him to be angry at her. If she were willing to explain, then he would definitely forgive her.
To his disappointment, she did not chase after him. Soon, he had arrived at the lobby entrance, and she was still nowhere to be seen. Must she be so indifferent and estranged to him?
Henry could not understand why he was disappointed, but he was upset. He was so disheartened that he felt like he had lost the sense of taste in his mouth.
As soon as he walked out the door, he looked up and saw a few people in the parking lot. It was Terry and Rufus. Joe was sandwiched between those two. He had not wanted to get involved, but he noticed the redness on Joe’s face. Were those bloodstains?
Henry frowned and walked toward them. “What’s going on?”
Joe felt a little awkward, so he whispered, “I’m okay.”
Rufus explained, “He was accidentally hit by a motorcycle when he was walking on the street…”
“Joe!” Emily tore out of the lobby entrance.
She had just vomited in the restroom and had wanted to explain things to Henry. She did not expect to see an injured Joe instead.
“What’s going on? Didn’t you say you were okay? How did you get hurt? Is it serious? Where else are you hurt?”
“I’m okay. It’s just a bruise on my face. I’m fine. It’s just a small wound, and it’s only a little blood.”
When he noticed her pale face, Joe explained hurriedly, “I accidentally bumped into a motorcycle. I was not paying attention while I was walking. It has nothing to do with the cyclist; it was just an accident. Merely an accident.”
However, Emily’s expression got even paler when she heard the word ‘accident’.
Joe noticed that too, so he immediately explained, “It’s my fault, really. I saw Terry across the road, and I rushed toward him without looking at the traffic.”
Emily did not know whether to believe him or not. She was not sure if Joe said that to comfort her.
Her eyes fell on Terry, and her voice trembled when she asked, “Really?”
Were they sure that the cyclist did not hit Joe deliberately? Why would Joe be in an accident as soon as she received the text message? She was concerned about the coincidences.
Even though Terry did not know why Emily was worried, he had caught on to Joe’s intention. They should not make her feel even more distressed about it.
He nodded. “He didn’t lie to you. It was just an accident.”
