Elena was already unconscious when they reached the hospital. Henry wanted to kill himself when he saw the bloodstain on her skirt! He did not expect things to end that way. Perhaps Elena did not expect that to happen too. Otherwise, she would not have agreed to it.
The doctor finally came out of the operating room at around one in the morning and shook his head at him. Henry felt as if his sight had blurred. When the doctor went back in to continue with the surgery on Elena, and Ashton walked to Henry and said, “Second Young Master, it may be hard to accept, but what’s done is done.”
Henry did not say anything. He leaned against the wall with his fists clenched tightly. The child was gone! He did not want to accept that, but what choice did he have?
Elena was still unconscious in the hospital bed. She still had no idea that she had lost her child, so what could he do other than to stay calm and face the storm head-on?
Elena finally woke up at around three in the morning. They had placed her in the ICU. When she opened her eyes, she stared at the ceiling quietly. She did not say anything to anyone. Henry was the only person in the room with her. It seemed like the storm had passed; there was finally some calm and peace.
“Elena…” Henry took her hand and tried to talk to her, but he could not find his voice. He could not even control his emotions.
“I heard… what they said.”
Elena closed her eyes and shed a tear. ‘It was all mommy’s fault, mommy was too selfish. You didn’t even get the opportunity to come into this world; the opportunity to take a look at this beautiful world. It was all my fault…’
Henry’s fingers tensed. He wanted to wipe her tears away, but his hands shook; it was as if they did not want to listen to his command. Eventually, he gave up and just held her hand against his chest.
“You are still young. Don’t be afraid…”
“Hmm.”
That was the only sound Elena made. She said nothing else that night. When it was almost dawn, Elena had a high fever, and the doctors and nurses rushed to stabilize her condition.
Her fever finally subsided around noon the next day, but she was still in a semi-conscious state. Henry had stayed by her side, from the first night when she was admitted until the third day. He only managed to sleep for about two hours while he was there. He would try to nap whenever he could not stay awake, but it was always only for a minute or two.
He was on edge all the time as he was afraid she would suddenly wake up. He felt restless whenever he closed his eyes. Hence, he had to rely on coffee to keep himself awake. He wanted to be there when she woke up. His vigil lasted three days until his body could not take it anymore. He fell asleep as he sat by her bedside.
When Elena woke up, the first thing she saw was the dark circles under his long eyelashes. He had leaned back on the chair, but his posture remained perfect, even when he was asleep. Who else could have slept while they were seated upright? It looked so rigid as if he would wake up at any moment. He seemed quite energetic, except for the thick dark circles that gave him away.
Elena had not been entirely unconscious on the third day. She felt the presence of the people around her, but she was not willing to wake up. She did not want to face the dire situation that she was in. She did not dare to do that. However, she knew that she had to be realistic. She gently stroked her abdomen, solemnly.
The baby must have left temporarily; he would be back one day. Maybe it was because she was not strong enough to protect him, so the baby had chosen to leave. ‘You’ll come back when mommy is strong enough, right?’
She moved her upper body. Henry, who was still in the chair, suddenly opened his eyes as if a nightmare had startled him.
“You’re awake?” Henry became nervous when he noticed Elena had looked back into his eyes.
“How do you feel? Are you in pain? I’ll call the doctor…”
She took his hand as she shook her head. Sometimes, words were not needed. She would remember his support forever.
“You…” Only when he started to speak that Henry realized his voice had become hoarse. It took him a great effort to get words out of his mouth.
“You just woke up, and your throat is probably a little scratchy. Don’t try to speak yet. Take it slowly.”
Henry needed assurance, so he called the doctor to check on her.
After the doctor was done, he said, “She is fine, but she has been asleep for too long, so her body is still weak.”
“When can she drink some water? Now? When can she eat? What can she eat? Is there anything she can’t eat? Can I take her out for a walk? She hasn’t seen the sun in a few days. And…”
Elena laid quietly on the bed as she watched him questioning the doctor.
He had jokingly complained that he had become her nanny. She did not think so at that time, but she suddenly realized that Second Young Master Sharp had acted like her babysitter. When did Second young Master Sharp ever harp on like that? When did they become so close? She reached out her arm, and Henry immediately broke his conversation with the doctor and stooped to hold her hand.
“What is it? Are you uncomfortable? What do you want?”
Elena just looked at him and did not speak. Henry did not know what she wanted, so he could only turn to the doctor for help.
The doctor looked at Elena, and then at Henry and sighed. “At this time, just spend more time with her.”
The child was gone, but they still had love with them.
“Both of you are still young, and you will be able to conceive more children in the future. Take a good rest and nourish your body. Everything will be fine.”
Henry’s ears burned. The doctor had misunderstood that the child was his.
Elena nodded and tried to say a few words to the doctor. “I… will get well.”
Elena spent her day in the room. She had been asleep for too long, so she was too weak to go anywhere. Therefore, Henry also stayed with her in the ward. Elena persuaded him to go to sleep a few times, but he had refused.
At around ten at night, he helped Elena back to the bed. Elena was about to sleep, but Henry remained in the chair and kept his gaze at her.
“I’m fine. You can go to bed too.” She was worried that he might collapse before if he persisted like that.
Henry shook his head. “I’m not sleepy. I’ll go to bed later. I’ll wait for you to fall asleep first.”
However, she knew that even if she had fallen asleep, he would still stay awake to watch over her.
After some consideration, she moved her body to the side to empty half of the bed. “You can sleep here.”
“No, I’m too big, I might squash you.” Henry immediately refused her offer.
“Then, I won’t sleep either.” She tried to sit up.
Henry hurriedly pressed her down gently. He gave up when he saw her stubborn face. He found it difficult to refuse her request. Finally, he laid down carefully on the other side of the bed. It was just to appease her. He would get up as soon as she was asleep.
Elena finally closed her eyes. Just as her eyes closed, she felt a chilly aura from the door…
