When she knew that it was a sham, Elena could no longer keep her cool. She went to the Williams’s mansion the very next day.
“Sorry, I’ve been ill lately and have been admitted to the hospital for half a month. That’s why I have not been keeping my promise.”
On the second day after she was discharged, Elena took the initiative to go to the Williams’s mansion to see Sarah, who did not have a good complexion on her at all. Dylan had almost gone crazy when he could not find Elena.
“Even if you were hospitalized, you should have sent him a message. He worked very hard to find you.”
Elena could not refute that, but she whispered, “Please let me go to the old madam’s room. I’ll have dinner with him tonight.”
“Don’t you feel bad using my son’s feelings to your advantage like that?”
Sarah was not in a pleasant mood that day. She saw the grief in her son’s eyes, and her heart ached for him. The woman who reduced her son to such a miserable state had a scandal with Second Young Master Sharp, and the entire Bentson had known about it.
“Sorry, but I did tell him that I have an agreement with you.”
Elena had never planned to use Dylan for anything. She had agreed to accompany him for Sarah’s sake, and nothing more.
Sarah was furious when she heard about that! “What? You told him?!”
How could Elena go so far to tell Dylan about the agreement between them? That would just push him further into the abyss, would it not? Did she have any professional ethics at all? How could she simply reveal their agreement to anyone?
“Eldest Madam, I don’t think you know your son at all.”
Elena knew that Sarah would be angry, but she remained calm. She softly said, “Don’t you think he’d be doubtful if I change my attitude toward him so abruptly?”
Elena looked at Sarah and calmly analyzed the situation for her.
“Had I not told him the truth, he would be heartbroken and unable to accept it when he finds out about it. Wouldn’t it be better to be frank with him right from the beginning?”
“So, he knew you had ulterior motives when you approached him, and yet he did not mind it?”
Elena answered, “I am not sure if he minded it, but he was not angry at all.”
Sarah’s anger calmed a little, and after she thought about it, she felt that it was not a bad idea to confess the truth after all. How could her son be so stupid? He accepted the girl even though he knew she was not sincere with him.
“He had been depressed all these while. When he was not at work, he shut himself in the room all the time.”
She had failed as a mother. Her son had decided to bottle his feelings instead of opening up to her.
Sarah sighed and hesitated before she said, “You broke your promise. I’ll have to check with Dylan if he’s okay with all of these before I continue with our agreement.”
“Very well.” Elena knew she was wrong, so she could only listen to her.
She had promised to accompany Dylan for a week but only managed one dinner with him before things went sideways. Sarah had a right to cancel their agreement.
When Sarah called Dylan, her solemn face immediately softened when she heard her son’s voice.
“Dylan, are you busy tonight? Would you like to come home for dinner?”
“I have something to do tonight. You don’t have to wait for me.” Dylan’s cold voice came from the other end of the phone.
Sarah sighed helplessly. “Dylan, you have been busy with work. It has been a while since you had a good dinner.”
“Mom, I’m going into a meeting soon. Let’s…”
“Elena is here with me.”
“What did you say?” A few simple words were enough to get Dylan nervous and excited at the same time. “Elena’s there with you?”
“Yes, she intends to stay for dinner. If you are not free, then I…”
“I… I am free! I am free now!” She was not sure what Dylan was doing, but it sounded as if he had started to pack his things.
“Mom, I will come home now. Please keep her there, and I will be home soon!”
Elena had gone to the mansion in the afternoon, and after her chat with Sarah, it was only about five in the evening. It was not even time to get off work yet. Sarah had mixed feelings about that; she had no idea that her son would be so hung up on Elena.
“Alright, I’ll keep her here, don’t worry about it. Be careful on your way home. Let your assistant drive.”
She was worried that he would speed if he were to drive his way home.
“I know, I know. Mom, you must help me to keep her there, don’t let her go!”
“I will.”
Sarah looked at Elena after she hung up the phone.
Elena looked indifferent about the situation. “Eldest Madam, I do have to remind you that this method is only good for the short term.”
Sarah understood that well, but what could she do about it?
“You will never understand a mother’s feeling unless you have children.”
Her own child… Elena’s hand subconsciously fell on her lower abdomen. Her children… Would she be able to have children? In her past life, Michael did not even touch her. It was simply a fantasy to have kids. Even though she had interactions with Eldest Young Master Williams in her new life, she did not think she would have kids with him.
As she calmed, Elena said, “Eldest Madam, Second Young Master Williams is on his way home, so I don’t have much time. Can you take me to the back end of the house now?”
“I’ll have to see if the old master and Rupert are around. Don’t look at me like that. You know that I can’t help you if they’re around.”
Sarah picked up her mobile phone and called the maid to ask if the two men were at home.
When Sarah hung up the phone, she looked at Elena and said, “I will take you there now.”

That was the first time Elena walked into the old madam’s residence after she passed away. It did look like Old Master Williams respected the old madam very much; he had kept her room the way it was when she was alive.
Elena entered the old madam’s room; it was quiet, and everything was in order. The old madam had loved reading books by the window. When Elena made her way there, she did not find anything unusual. She had gone through all the drawers, but there were only daily essentials there.
The old madam had not worked for years, so there were only a few documents there. However, her bookcases were full. Elena went over there to check it out. From the philosophy of life to the cultivation of flowers and plants, there were all kinds of books there. However, her gaze fell onto one book in particular. She took it and flipped through it casually, and she found a yellowed photo in between the pages!
It was her mom… Her eyes moistened, and a tear nearly trickled from the corners of her eyes. There was no question about it. Even though she only had vague memories about her, she could recognize that it was her mom, Talia! They looked alike too.
Elena took a deep breath and was about to put away the photo when she noticed the skirt that Talia wore in the picture. It looked familiar; had she seen it before?
