“Rupert, I didn’t hurt Grandmother. I’m not an evil person. Why would I want to kill you?” Elena squeezed the girl’s arms tightly as a thin layer of sweat formed on her face.
“Rupert, I am not a bad person. Please believe me!”
With much effort, Rupert finally calmed down and looked at Elena. It was obvious that she was still unsure if Elena was a good or evil person.
She had been the only person with the old madam when she had that accident. No one else was there with them! If it were not for Elena, would the wheelchair move on its own?
“I think it’s a little too hot here. Let’s find someplace else to talk,” Henry said as he looked upward.
Elena’s face was flushed under the blazing sun.
She looked at Rupert. Her eyes were filled with anxiety, but at the same time, she pleaded, “Trust me, please!”
Rupert hesitated for a few moments before she finally nodded.
The two girls sat together under the shade of a tree. Henry stood in the distance and did not participate in their conversation at all.
“I didn’t hurt Grandmother. If you don’t believe me, then there is no use in discussing the next part with you.”
Elena sighed, but she stared at Rupert with sincerity. She needed Rupert to believe her before she could continue with her questions.
Rupert let out a long sigh. She was also at a loss.
“Actually, Young Madam, I believed you.” Rupert had never acknowledged Ava as Eldest Young Madam Williams. Elena was the only Young Madam Williams in the family.
“The old madam liked you very much, and I could see that. As for Ava, the old madam…”
She paused and glanced around them for a few moments.
Only Henry was there. Even though he stood some distance away, Rupert decided to be cautious, and so she spoke in a low voice, “The old madam was afraid of Ava. She was… terrifying.”
“What?” Did it actually have something to do with Ava?
“Young Madam…”
“Call me Elena, I am no longer part of the Williams family,” Elena said plainly.
Rupert bit her lower lip. It had only been less than a month, and yet, things had changed so much.
“Elena,” Rupert addressed her before she continued to tell her what had happened that night.
“After you left, Ava’s people also withdrew. However, she stayed in the old madam’s room all night long.
“I went to see the old madam later that night. I didn’t realize that anything was wrong, but Ava had stayed in there the whole time. I felt… very uneasy about that.”
As Rupert recalled what had happened that night, she still felt a lingering sense of fear.
Even though Ava’s bodyguards had left, the two maids had been there. It was as if someone had stared at her the whole time. The two maids were particularly fierce and terrifying.
“I had planned to go see Eldest Young Master in the morning.”
The old madam had an excellent relationship with Eldest Young Master Williams, and even Rupert knew about that.
“However, the next morning, I saw Ava kneeling before the old madam, and she had been crying.
“I wanted to hear what she was saying to the old madam, but I did not get a chance to do that. The two maids drove me away.
“After that, when Ava left, the old madam was no different than her usual self, so I went to prepare breakfast for her and waited for her to get up.
“She was in a great mood during breakfast, which was completely different from the night before.
“The old madam also mentioned that everything would be resolved and that things would be out in the open when the old master returned. She could finally be rid of that problem.”
“Did she say anything about what she had wanted to tell the old master?” That was what Elena was concerned with the most! It was also her biggest doubt.
“The old madam did not say. She only said that it was stupid of her to be deceived and to have hurt you… to have hurt you so much.”
“Me?” Elena pointed at herself.
The matter did have something to do with her.
However, what was it?
“Yes. The old madam said, ‘I have hurt Elena’.”
She had been deceived into hurting her… Did she mean that she had been wrong when she put her trust in Ava and mistook Elena as the bad person?
However, she felt that the matter was not that simple.
“Did the old madam say anything else?”
Rupert remembered what had happened that morning. “The old madam said that you would get justice when the old master and Eldest Young Master Williams arrived.”
Elena still did not understand the situation, but Rupert could not provide any more information.
Did the matter have anything to do with the old madam’s murder? She was even more convinced that it was not an accident. It was definitely not an accident. Someone had planned for that to happen!
“Oh, right!” Rupert suddenly thought of something, and as she looked at Elena, she said, “Before she met with you, the old madam saw another person!”
“Who was it?” Anxiety gripped at Elena’s heart.
Rupert’s heart was in distress, but she knew that it might be a crucial piece of information for Elena.
“It was Eldest Madam Williams.”
“Sarah?” But why?
“Yes, it was Eldest Madam Williams.” Rupert nodded; she was sure of it.
“What did they talk about?” Elena asked.
“I don’t know. The eldest madam said that it was too windy by the lakeside, and so she sent me to get a blanket for the old madam.”
“In other words, Sarah, and the old madam were alone for some time?”
It was quite a distance to walk from the lake to the room. It would probably take an average person about ten minutes at a casual pace to walk between those two points.
It meant that Sarah had been alone with the old madam for at least ten minutes after Rupert had left to get something from the room.
What had transpired within those ten minutes?
Elena made further inquiries about that. “After you got back, what were they doing?”
Rupert shook her head. “Nothing. The eldest madam had left when I got back to the old madam. I did not dare to ask her about the family affairs.”
Elena remained silent and pondered about it for a while. Then she said, “You’d better go back. It won’t be good if they saw you slipped out at this time.”
“It’s alright. I haven’t found a job yet. I’m here today to pay my respects to the old madam.”
The late old madam was nice to everyone during her lifetime. She had never treated her servants with any arrogance.
However, Rupert’s words caused a chill to run down Elena’s body. “Are you… not working for the Williams family anymore?”
“Eldest Madam said that I didn’t take good care of the old madam, which led to the accident…”
Rupert lowered her head for a moment. Then she raised her head and smiled at Elena.
“It doesn’t matter now. I’m already looking for a new job. You don’t have to worry about me.”
Elena nodded and then reached for her bag. Rupert immediately said, “Elena, don’t give me any money; I don’t want it.”
“How do you…”
“Eldest Young Master also wanted to give me money, but I had refused to take any from him. I did not take good care of the old madam, and I am already fortunate that they did not hold me accountable for the accident.”
“Eldest Young Master Williams?” Even Eldest Young Master Williams wanted to give her money.
“Yes, that’s right. Even though Eldest Young Master Williams looks cold, he is actually a nice person.”
Rupert looked at the time and stood up quickly. “I have to pay my respects to the old madam, and I still have an interview to attend in the afternoon. I should get going now, Miss Garcia.”
