Kevin pulled a chair and sat down, deliberately not looking at Freya’s eyes. Bella understood why he was avoiding her, because her eyes could very well destroy the hard-won belief in his heart.
Bella sat beside Kevin. In the large box, it was very quiet, and the only sound that could be heard was the breathing of them.
The breathing was chaotic and irregular. It could be seen that they were not calm. Kevin was nervous because he was about to face his past lover and his current lover. No matter who was hurt, it would be intolerable for him.
Bella was nervous, naturally because she was afraid that Kevin would retreat at the last minute.
Conrad was nervous because he was afraid that Kevin would say something that would hurt Freya, and Freya was nervous as well.
After a long silence, Kevin glanced at Freya coldly and said in a deep voice, “I asked you out today because I want to introduce you solemnly.”
He looked towards Bella at his side, “This is my wife. I love her very much.”
The atmosphere was frosty again. Freya’s fingers clenched tightly together and she didn’t say anything.
“We are living a good life now. I won’t abandon her because of anyone. Without her, there would be no me today. So let’s not see each other again. I can put the past behind me, and bless you and Conrad be together.”
Freya’s face grew pale and she broke out in a cold sweat on her forehead. She still didn’t say anything.
“Of course I want you to continue to leave here, just as silently as you did three years ago. In City B, I don’t want to meet any of you unexpectedly again.”
“Don’t say that!”
Conrad stood up, and veins popped out on his forehead. He punched angrily on Kevin’s face with his fist. Kevin dodged it with a flash of speed, but he didn’t let go, and soon they wrestled together.
“Stop it, both of you, stop it.”
Bella was so anxious that she had to step forward to stop it, while Freya sat like a mummy and silently wept in her seat.
“Conrad, I told you to stop. Why did you take away someone else’s fiancée? You’re rightfully beating people up here!!!”
Bella growled angrily at him. Conrad was startled and tugged at her arm, “You come out with me.”
“Let go of me. Why should I go out with you?”
Conrad turned a deaf ear and looked askance at Freya, “Freya, it’s time to tell the truth.”
“Let her go.”
Kevin gloomily said. He wanted to hit him again, but Freya spoke, “Kevin, let them out. I have something to say to you.”
Bella’s heart jumped and she suddenly stopped struggling. She seemed to anticipate that what Freya was going to say would definitely shake the emotional balance in Kevin’s heart.
And so, like a puppet, she was dragged out of the compartment by Conrad.
Conrad closed the door and leaned his back against the wall of the corridor. He closed his beautiful eyes tightly. His handsome face was wounded again even when his old wounds weren’t healed.
Bella leaned against the door and could clearly hear the voices inside. Her lips trembled a few times and she choked and asked Conrad, “Do you have to help Freya to destroy my family like this?”
“I have no desire to ruin anyone’s happiness, but there are things that must be said clearly. If you are Freya, you carry a blood feud with you, and you are not willing to endure your pain alone.”
Bella fell silent as a conversation that disturbed her had begun in the compartment across that door.
Kevin gazed at Freya coldly and said, holding back his fluttering heart, “I’ll give you half an hour to finish what you want to say at once.”
Freya looked up, her eyes teary, took one step towards him, and suddenly hugged him and wailed loudly.
“Kevin, it’s been three years, and I have been heartbroken everyday. Do you know who put us in this situation? It’s your father, Patrick. Do you know that my parents are dead? And do you know who killed them? It’s your mother, Blanche …”
Bella stood by the door, and her brain was blank. She covered her mouth in shock, completely unable to believe what she had just heard.
It was impossible, absolutely impossible. Her in-laws were kind and benevolent. How could they have harmed someone else’s life like Wilson and Colin.
“What are you talking nonsense?”
Kevin pushed her away. Like Bella, he couldn’t accept what Freya said.
“I’m not talking nonsense!”
Freya cried and was much sadder as she began to recount the past events that had happened three years ago that Kevin did not know about.
“The first time you brought me home four years ago, your father looked at me strangely. He took advantage of your absence and asked me what my mother’s name was, I didn’t think much of it at the time and told him my mother’s name was Camille. He then paled. Then I went to your house again, and his attitude towards me was very cold. Until one day, he suddenly asked me out to meet him. In a tea house, he told me to leave you. Naturally, I didn’t agree to ask him why. Do you know what he said? ”
Kevin was indifferent as he spoke, “What did he say?”
“He said that Camille’s daughter was not worthy to marry into the Jones-Sharps.” Freya’s tears fell again, “Just because I am Camille’s daughter, I have to leave you. I was confused and asked him what had happened between him and my mother, but he told me to go home and ask my mother. He warned me that I must never say anything to you about this appointment, or he would make our family suffer.”
“When I came out of the tea house, I ran home like a madman. As soon as I saw my mother, I cried and asked her what was the relationship between her and Patrick. My mother was shocked and very angry at what I said. She told me not to ignore him, saying that your father was a heartless and unjust man, who deceived her into making love thirty years ago but then abandoned her. Now he was afraid that I would marry you and his scandal would come to light. So he insisted on chasing me away. After listening to my mother’s words, I was more relieved and was not rest assured of your father’s warning. After ten days or so, he asked me out again. This time he gave me a big cheque straight away, but I refused, telling him that I loved you not because of your wealth, but because I simply loved you. I also promised that I would not say anything about him and my mother, but he still disagreed and insisted that I leave you.”
“That day, we departed unhappily, and soon after that, a bolt from the blue happened in our family, and I, at the time, never thought that it had anything to do with your father.”
Kevin held his breath, waiting for what Freya would say next …
“It was an overcast night, with the possibility of a downpour at any moment, and my father had finished delivering the last of his customer’s goods, and wanted to get home before it rained. So he overtook a remote path, which my father was not the first to pass, and there was no one around at all. But on that night, suddenly a drunkard appeared out of nowhere and walked directly towards my father’s car. Because it was too sudden, my father did not have time to brake, and the man was crushed under the car, died on the spot. My father was terrified and did not know what to do. He didn’t see the man’s face clearly, because his face was full of blood, with the strong smell of alcohol. My father struggled for a long time. For fear of being sent to jail, he fled. When he went back home with a lot of bloodstains, my mother and I saw this and asked him what had happened. My father felt weak at his knees and fell to the ground, crying that he had hit someone, and killed him. Our family was instantly plunged into darkness, and did not sleep for the whole night. At dawn, my father could not stand the fear, and wanted to go to the police station to confess his crime, but my mother did not let him go. She was very affectionate towards my father. Back when she was abandoned, my honest father married her, and in over twenty years, they have never once argued. My mother said it was a remote area with no surveillance and no witnesses, and no one would know as long as we didn’t confess. At her insistence, my father had to give up the idea of confessing his crime. In this way, our family spent three days in fear. Every day, we watched the TV news report about the victim who was hit, or heard the sound of the police car whistling. After a few more days in such a tense atmosphere, we began to feel relieved, thinking that the matter would eventually come to an end. However, we didn’t expect that my father’s crime was still known.”
Freya wiped her tears, and looked resentful.
“That was the third time your father asked me to meet him. I didn’t even think he would be clear about our family. He threw a stack of pictures in front of me. The pictures were the images of my father hitting people at that time. I asked him in panic where it came from. He said no matter where it came from, my father indeed hit someone. At that moment, I seemed to have predicted the purpose of his meeting with me, and sure enough, I was right. He said he would help me settle this matter and would keep it secret forever, with only one condition of leaving you.”
Kevin had clenched his hands into fists. He was livid as he questioned Freya, “Why didn’t you even tell me about it?”
