Jessica became impatient and started to name-call Leonardo.
“Can you please let me finish first?!” Summer did not know whether to laugh or cry.
“Okay, okay, okay. I’ll let you finish.” Jessica was swirling the glass of water in her hand, apparently not interested in what Summer had to say.
“He told me that he would sign Emerson Group over to me,” Summer said matter-of-factly.
“He’ll give you Emerson Group?” Jessica responded absentmindedly.
After two seconds, it sank in, and Jessica gripped Summer’s hand. “What did you just say? Say that again!”
“Leonardo said he would sign Emerson Group over to me.”
Jessica’s jaw dropped to the ground. Realizing how embarrassing she looked, she quickly collected herself.
Nonetheless, she was still wide-eyed. Even her voice was trembling. “The big boss really said that?”
“Uh-huh.” Summer nodded.
“Emerson-Emerson-Emerson Group…” Jessica stammered as she took out her mobile phone. “Let me check how much Emerson Group is worth.”
Everyone knew that Emerson Group was a rich company, but no one knew how much it was worth.
Summer threw Jessica a look of contempt. “Do you know that all you have are dollar signs in your eyes?”
“Who doesn’t like money? I never said that I didn’t like money.” Jessica then looked at Summer as if something had occurred to her. “As the saying goes, friends for better or for worse. But I’m not asking you to share your wealth with me. I will only ask you to help make me famous in the entertainment industry!”
“If you want to rise to stardom, you can just let Carl know. Isn’t that easier?”
In this day and age, people usually take to social media to amass a huge following and get instant fame.
However, Jessica was an actress who relied on her acting skills, so it was hard work.
Carl was in charge of Tip Top Entertainment. He definitely supported Jessica, but she did not want to be successful in the film industry just because she was a social media celebrity. She wanted to act in a film with a good screenplay and become famous for it.
She rolled up her sleeves, pretending to be angry. “Are you looking for a fight, Summer?”
She paused for a second, then continued, “You’re different from Carl. If you become rich, I will too. I can spend your money without feeling indebted.”
“I can help you talk to Leonardo, and you won’t have to worry about being indebted to Carl.”
“I was just kidding… I’m happy just to choose the script I like and have enough money to spend.” Jessica steered the conversation back. “Did the big boss really say that? He really wants to give you Emerson Group?”
“Mhm.”
“You dare to take it?”
Summer was transfixed for a second, and she answered honestly, “No.”
“You’re a chicken!” Jessica burst into laughter, her body bending forward.
“I’m not made for business. If Emerson Group were in my hands, it would go belly up within three years.”
“Three years? You think too highly of yourself.”
The laughter stopped, and Jessica smacked Summer on the shoulder. “But I have to say, the big boss is generous to give you Emerson Group. Even so, I still can’t believe it.”
“He seems to be serious. He even asked me to go back to Emerson Group tomorrow.” Summer collapsed back into her chair. “I don’t think I’d dare to go. He’ll surely let me sign the papers tomorrow. I don’t know what to do now.”
“Seriously? How can he get all the paperwork done in such a short time? You could just be overthinking it.”
“Not really. Leonardo means what he says. He will never lie to me.”
Summer’s words reminded Jessica of the unsettling reality that she was single.
“Being single, do you know how pissed I feel when I hear that?” Jessica looked at her with her head tilted. “Why worry about what to do? Just take it since he’s giving it to you. Maybe he would feel more secure with you taking over Emerson Group?”
The more Jessica talked, the more absurd it got. So, Summer thought that she might as well change the subject.
…
The next day, Tim knocked on Summer’s door at the same time as before.
“The young master has sent me to give you a ride to Emerson Group, Mrs. Emerson.”
“Give me a minute.”
She took her jacket and went with Tim.
Today, she still entered Emerson Group through the main entrance.
She waved at the receptionists with a warm smile on her face. “Hi, I’m back.”
The receptionists kept their heads low, too afraid to look at her.
Why were they so scared of her? Just because Leonardo had come down to receive her before…
Her smile faded. Those cynical receptionists instantly shut up when Leonardo came down to the lobby to receive her. She truly could not underestimate the young master’s power.
They only looked up after Summer walked past them.
“Is she gone?” one of the receptionists asked.
“Yeah.”
“That scared the hell out of me.”
“The departmental head called me into his office yesterday, I thought I was going to lose my job…”
“Who would’ve thought that the president and Summer are together?”
…
Inside Leonardo’s office, Summer saw someone whom she had not seen for a long time.
“Ms. Jarrett.” Warren looked at her with a big smile on his face.
Summer was rooted to the spot for a while. She had almost forgotten who he was.
“Mr. Smith, the lawyer.” She nodded at him. When she got closer, she saw documents strewn all over the desk.
Leonardo stood up, brought a chair behind her, and sat her down.
“We need you, Ms. Jarrett…” Before Warren could finish, Leonardo glared at him.
He pushed his glasses up his nose, trying to hide the awkwardness on his face and remain natural. “We need you, Mrs. Emerson, to sign these documents.”
She browsed through the documents; they were all share transfer agreements.
Just as she had guessed, Leonardo only needed one day and to prepare the agreement. She was there today to sign the documents.
“You’re mad, Leonardo!” She looked over at Leonardo, her voice now an octave higher due to her emotional state.
Leonardo just placed a pen in front of her.
He kept his professional disposition, and as if he did not hear what Summer said, he started to read out the contents of each document to her.
Summer placed her hand on her forehead and stared at Warren. “Can you please give me a minute, Mr. Smith? I need to talk to Leonardo.”
“Don’t waste your time on dissuading him, Mrs. Emerson. Why don’t you just sign the agreement so that I can finish my job earlier?” Warren still had the same professional smile on his face. “As you’ve said, he’s mad. You can’t reason with a madman.”
