Chapter 374 Screwing Up Your Best Card

Book:CEO's Substitute Wife Published:2024-5-1

Leonardo saw Kate in his office when he arrived at Emerson Corporation. She was sitting on the couch, looking quite unhappy because she had been waiting for a while. She snapped the moment Leonardo came in, “Where have you been?”
“Do I have to report to you?” Leonardo shot her a glance as he walked behind his desk and sat down. He did not give a hoot about her.
Kate flew off the handle, angrily marching up to him in her high heels. “Leonardo, we are siblings connected by blood. We should trust and help each other.”
“Trust each other?” Leonardo sneered as if he had heard something funny. “Have you lied to me?”
He stared her in the eye with his penetrating peepers. A fleeting hint of panic flashed in her eyes, but she tried to keep a smile on her face. “Has someone told you something?”
Leonardo did not answer her question, merely staring at her. Kate started to feel uneasy, afraid that her lies would be exposed. She was so nervous now that she did not even know where to place her hands. Why should she be nervous and scared, though? She did everything for Leonardo and the Emerson family.
Thinking of that, Kate regained her composure. “You shouldn’t trust others no matter what they say to you. People look at our success with jealousy, and they are eager to see infighting so that they may benefit from it!”
“Really?” Leonardo was still emotionless. It was not his first time hearing her say such a thing.
“Of course!”
“I need to work. Leave me now.” Leonardo did not look at her as he switched on the computer.
Kate was unsure if Leonardo still trusted her, but she did not seem to have any other choice other than to leave the room. Once she was out of the president’s office, a cloud of suspicion appeared on her face. Leonardo had never questioned her in the past three years. He had forgotten about his past and never hung out with Carl again. Although they were not as close as she wished they could be, he had been listening to her at least. But recently, she found herself gradually losing grasp of Leonardo. What could have gone wrong?
Those were the thoughts she had as she returned to her room. She then made a long-distance telephone call. The phone rang for a few seconds before it was picked up, and Kate went postal. “Dr. Li, I’m losing control over my younger brother. He just won’t listen to me. I think something’s wrong with your hypnosis!”
There was silence on the other end. After a while, the hoarse voice of a man answered, “Hypnotism isn’t soul control. Even though he’s undergone hypnosis, he still keeps his free will and thinking. It entirely depends on your ability if you want to control him and get him to listen to you.”
There seemed to be no emotion in Dr. Li’s voice, but Kate felt like he was mocking her. She clenched her fists, her face darkening. “Are you insinuating that I’m not capable enough?”
“You’ve been the only person who can earn his trust for the past three years. Yet, you’ve screwed up your best card. That speaks volumes about your ability.”
“You…”
A prideful person like Kate never treated anyone seriously. So, when she heard such a reply, she almost could not hold back her anger. However, she still needed the doctor’s help, hence she closed her eyes and fought the rage. Once she calmed down, she finally asked again, “Dr. Li, is it possible for my brother to regain his memory?”
“There is no definite answer to your question.”
“You mean there’s a possibility that he’ll regain his memories of the past?” Kate’s expression changed. “Didn’t you tell me that everything would be all right?”
“That’s what you think. I have work to do, so please excuse me, Ms. Emerson. Goodbye.” Dr. Li hung up.
“Dr. Li? Hello?” Kate could not believe that even this freaking doctor had hung up on her. She threw her mobile phone to the floor in a fit and paced anxiously in her room. She figured that she could not just await her doom; Leonardo could not be allowed to remember his past. As long as he did not see those he knew in the past, he would not remember again. That had been the status quo for the past three years, had it not been?
The more Kate thought, the more convinced she was of her reasoning. She summoned Leonardo’s driver over the intercom.
“Where has Leonardo been for the past two days?” she asked as the driver came over.
The driver looked down and appeared hesitant. “He didn’t go anywhere.”
Kate sneered, “Didn’t he go and see the guy from Tip Top Entertainment?”
“Yes,” the driver quickly replied.
“Keep an eye on him.” Kate shot the driver a warning glance.

Since Leonardo nearly lost Rosie when Amber brought her out last time, he did not stay back. He went home immediately after work. As soon as he stepped out of the Emerson Corporation building, Kate was on his tail.
“Leonardo.”
She caught up with Leonardo quickly as she called out to him.
“Anything?” Leonardo looked back at her coldly.
Kate approached him and placed her arm around him affectionately. “Let’s go home together.”
Finding it weird, Leonardo glanced at her and pulled away before he strode toward his car. Kate’s expression faded, but she suppressed her displeasure and followed him. As the driver opened the car door for Leonardo and he got in, Kate went in after him. He frowned but said nothing. He just took out a document and started to read it.
Kate felt a little awkward. Besides their disagreement, she found herself running out of topics to talk with Leonardo. This realization worsened the uneasiness in her. She pondered for a moment, then said, “Leonardo—”
“Don’t interrupt me. I’m reading here.” Leonardo did not look at her. He sounded as if he was talking to a stranger.
Not wanting to embarrass herself any further, Kate decided to keep mum.
At last, the car stopped in front of the Emersons’ residence. As soon as Leonardo got out of the car, he saw a white car pulling up in the parking bay. He recognized that the car belonged to Amber. For Rosie’s sake, he had turned a blind eye when Amber came to his house previously. But he had told her not to come again the day before. Did she not take his words seriously?
