After the telephone call with Leonardo, everything seemed to change. It was as if she was spellbound by what Leonardo said. She could not shake the thought from her mind. He said that after he took care of everything, he could bring them home.
Summer tried to analyze his words, but she still could not come to a conclusion. The men whom Leonardo sent were following her secretly at first, but after her telephone conversation with Leonardo, they came out in the open.
Whenever she and Douglas went out, the bodyguards would wait outside and open the car door for them. Whenever she and Douglas ate at a restaurant, the waitstaff would inform them that the bill had been taken care of.
At first, Summer ignored them all by pretending not to see them. But the bodyguards stuck like glue to them, following them wherever they went. Later, Summer gave in. She would get in the car and let them pick up the tab for everything.
Until one day, Summer found herself moving into a house they had arranged for her. Only then did she realize that she had fallen into Leonardo’s trap again. Standing in the living room, she kicked herself for being too softhearted.
A maid asked her, “Mrs. Emerson, what do you think about this house?”
Douglas came over and said, “I think it’s not bad. How about you, Summer?”
“As long as you like it.” Summer did not want to say more. She turned around and went upstairs. Once back in her room, she got a call from Jessica.
After Summer told her what had happened recently, Jessica said, “It is Big Boss’s duty to look after you. Don’t forget that it’s also his seed. Why should you be the only one shouldering the responsibility?”
Hearing that, Summer did not know whether she should laugh or cry.
Jessica asked, “What do you think? If Big Boss comes to bring you home, do you want to follow him?”
Summer thought for a moment and said, “I don’t know.” She really had no idea right now.
“When you say ‘you don’t know’, it means you are hesitating, which means you want to follow Big Boss.”
Summer realized that Jessica had hit the nail on the head. Deep inside her subconscious, she was longing to return to Hoover City.
After a long while of silence, Summer said, “I will cross the bridge when I come to it.” Since she could not figure it out now, the only thing she could do was leave it at the back of her mind.
…
Summer was experiencing the same lifestyle as when she was still in Hoover City. There were a bunch of bodyguards following her wherever she went, and maids in the house. The only difference was that her personal freedom was not restricted.
Life had been peaceful since, and it was July now.
The weather on the first day of this month was not looking good. The sky had been gloomy since the morning as if it was going to rain. But it still had not rained at mid-noon, and the color of the sky was depressingly gray.
Summer felt irritated. Everything seemed to go wrong, and Douglas had noticed her emotions.
“Summer, you feel unwell?” he asked.
Summer shook her head with a frown. “Nothing,” she said, just feeling irritated.
He brought her to sit down on the sofa. “Let’s play a game. It is a puzzle game. I feel it is pretty fun. Do you want to try?”
Summer took the mobile phone from him and started playing. As the loud sound of thunder came, Douglas and Summer almost jumped up from the sofa. Heaven opened up, and the rain poured down.
Summer looked out the window and mumbled, “It’s finally raining.”
Douglas got up and walked to the door. “Yeah, it pours. Summer, when will the rain stop?” Hearing no response, he looked back. “Summer…”
Summer was lying on the sofa, her body curled up, her hands clutching the sofa fabric, looking in pain. Douglas’s face changed and ran over.
“Summer, what’s going on?”
“I… I’m… going into labor…” A series of pain came from her abdomen. Her voice became disjointed as she spoke.
“Labor?” Douglas was rooted to the spot. After two seconds, he came out of his panic and ran out for help. “Help! Summer is in labor!”
Since she was due soon, there was a family doctor and a bunch of bodyguards and maids in the house. She also knew which hospital to go to for her confinement. She was held into the car and sent to the hospital at once.
The rain had not let up. It was still pouring. Summer was sweating profusely from the pain as she grabbed Douglas’s hand and squeezed a word out of a mouth. “Phone…”
Douglas came to his senses and quickly took out his mobile phone and called Leonardo. But there was no answer. Douglas glanced at Summer, becoming like a cat on hot bricks. He almost shouted, “Answer the phone, Leonardo!”
Summer’s face was pale, biting her lips as she waited for Leonardo to answer the call. But it rang until the call dropped.
“He must be on something now and hasn’t heard his phone ring. Let me try again.”
Summer could not even utter a word now because of the throe. She managed to reply with an “Mmm.”
Douglas redialed in front of her, but there was still no answer.
By now, the car had arrived in front of the hospital entrance. They had informed the hospital before they even came. So the doctor and medical staff had been waiting at the entrance.
As Summer lay on the stretcher, her eyes were looking at Douglas, her expression apparently asking him whether Leonardo had answered the call.
Douglas held the mobile phone in his hand. He got his knickers in a twist from Summer’s stare. How he wished Leonardo could answer his call right now. He had been calling him non-stop, yet there was still no answer—even after Summer was wheeled into the delivery room.
Her plan was to have a natural childbirth. Judging by her health condition, she met all the conditions. Summer had once said that natural childbirth was painful. But she only experienced the actual pain when she was in the delivery room. The pain was so unbearable that she was thinking of giving up.
“Push! Keep pushing! It is coming out…” the doctor exhorted. “Hang in there!”
Summer felt the pain was crushing her every bone. At last, she heard the doctor said smilingly, “It’s a girl, and she is healthy. Congratulations!”
The next second, she heard the cry of the baby, and it was loud. The doctor carried the baby up to her. “Take a look.”
