Instead of watching the movie, Douglas ended up talking with Summer.
He had been living abroad for a long while and had no friends in the country. Without a person to talk to, he probably had been keeping these things to himself for a long time.
Now he found Summer as his confidante and told her everything. From what Douglas said, Summer started to have an inkling of his family’s situation.
His parents were on the same wavelength, and his brother was gentle on the outside but a cruel animal abuser on the inside. This had been affecting Douglas to a certain extent, especially at his age.
When Summer emerged from the audio-visual room, she bumped into Leonardo, who was looking for her. She was walking in front while Douglas followed behind her. Leonardo’s expression told her he was not too happy. Apparently, Douglas inviting her for a movie had angered him.
Summer had been exhausted in entertaining the Emersons. Instead of letting her take some rest, Douglas had asked her for a movie. It was no wonder Leonardo was looking daggers at Douglas.
After so long, Douglas still found Leonardo still that dreadful.
Summer shot a glare at Leonardo and turned to Douglas. “Douglas, please go take a rest.”
“Okay.” Off he fled like a possessed man.
Leonardo pressed his lips together, eyes cold. “Summer, you are pregnant now. You don’t have to entertain him. This kid likes to fool around.”
“I’m not going to listen to you.” She covered her ears with her hands as she walked toward the bedroom.
Leonardo’s face darkened, his voice filled with anger. “Summer!”
She looked back, stroking her belly gently as she said matter-of-factly, “You’re scaring the baby.”
Leonardo took a deep breath, telling himself not to get worked up with this stupid woman.
She could not help but chuckle at seeing him trying very hard to fight back his anger. Knowing that his heart was in the right place, she turned back and held his hand to make up with him. “Alright, alright. Let’s go to take some rest.”
His temper went away just as quickly as it came in front of Summer, at least.
Back to the bedroom, Leonardo laid her down in bed, pulled the duvet over her, and ordered, “Sleep now.”
After talking with Douglas for so long, she did not feel like sleeping now. “I’ve something to talk to you about.”
“That can wait until you wake up.” He ignored her anticipative look.
“How is your uncle and aunt’s relationship?” she asked.
“They are an exemplary loving couple in the eyes of Grandpa.” Leonardo broke into a self-deprecating smile because, in his grandpa’s eyes, his mom and Michael were also a loving couple.
“I just talk with Douglas. He thinks otherwise. He feels his parents don’t really love each other anymore.” Summer sighed. “I’m thinking will we become like that after we have been together for too long?”
“That won’t happen.” Leonardo said confidently.
“Really?” She was touched by what he said.
The next second, Leonardo said, “Why are you thinking of this thing when you are still pregnant with my child? Are you thinking of cheating on me?”
Sensing danger, she secretly glanced at Leonardo. He stared at her as if he was going to give her an earful if she could not give him a satisfactory answer.
Nevertheless, Summer always had a powerful survival instinct. She held his hand, all smiles. “How could I? There is no man more handsome and wealthier than you are.”
“You mean if there is a man who is more handsome and wealthier than I am, you are going to give me up?” His expression was getting even more dangerous now.
She had been trying to please him, but his reply was wide off the mark. Was there any other man more good-looking and wealthier than he was? That was impossible. She was trying to compliment him, but he completely missed the point. She started to think that she could not really follow the train of thought of a smart man like him.
“How could I?” She shifted her voice an octave higher, trying to make herself sound more sincere. His expression softened. But he said nothing.
Summer held his hand to her lips and gave him a kiss on the back of his hand. “I am serious.”
She then felt his hand froze for a moment. He looked like a fish out of water.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed. When he saw Summer looked at him, he looked away. “Go to sleep. I still have things to do.”
His reaction startled Summer. Was he embarrassed? This guy was smooth when he flirted with her. Yet, when she gave him a kiss on his hand, he felt embarrassed. She wanted to try it again. But Leonardo pulled his hand back as if he knew what she would do next.
“I’m going to the reading room,” he said.
Leonardo walked out of the bedroom. Before he even closed the door, his face darkened when he heard a laugh from Summer inside. He slammed the door shut and off he went. Not knowing that Ava was carrying a tray with a bowl coming in his direction, he collided into her. Ava spilled the content of the bowl onto him. It was a dessert meant for Summer. Leonardo instinctively raised his hand that Summer had kissed earlier in the air, barely avoiding getting spilled on.
Ava saw his reaction and asked in concern. “Young Master, is your hand hurt?”
“No.”
“Let me take a look.” Ava was worried.
“It won’t be necessary.” Leonardo took a step back, covering that hand with the other as he walked around Ava and left.
“Why is he covering his hand? His hand must have been injured.” Ava mumbled to herself as Leonardo left before her eyes.
…
When Summer woke up from her sleep, a maid told her that Leonardo’s hand was injured. She got worried.
“How did that happen?”
Before she slept, he was still all right. What had happened since then? How did he hurt himself?
“Why is he?” Summer asked.
“Young Master is in the reading room. He has never come out,” the maid said respectfully.
Summer was a little confused now. If he had been in the reading room, how did he hurt himself? She decided to check him out. Standing in front of the reading room, she gave the door a couple of knocks before she went in.
“They say you hurt your hand. Let me take a look.”
Burying himself in work, he was startled, but he could put two and two together. His expression got unnatural, his voice sounding angry. “I’m not hurt. I have work to do. Please leave me alone?”
