Coming out of the room, Summer found that Adams was the only person left in the living room.
Adams heard the door opening and turned toward her. “Summer,” he called.
“Don’t call me that, Mr. Wilson. Call me Summer.” Her voice was just as grim as her face. She could not bring herself to pretend like Adams, as though all was well after everything that had happened.
He was not only Leonardo’s elder cousin but also her down-to-earth, kind, and approachable idol of eight years.
No one had compelled him to be a good man. No matter what the reason was, she just could not understand why he would do such a thing.
She had done nothing wrong. No matter what grudges he held against Leonardo, he should not have trained his gun on her.
There were slight changes in Adams’s expression like he was anguished or helpless.
“I’m sorry for what happened.” His smile faded, and it was replaced by a serious demeanor.
“What use is there for your apology?” His apology was not sincere; he did not even think that he had done anything wrong.
However, Adams also did not seem to care whether she accepted his apology or not. He just nodded his head in acknowledgment.
“I don’t know what happened between you and Leonardo, but I know that you are important to him. He’s known about what you’ve done from the very beginning, but he’s still giving you a chance.”
After calming down, she started to see and think more clearly. Tilting her head slightly, Summer said, “I envy you, really.” She was jealous of him because of how accommodating and tolerant Leonardo was toward him.
Her words appeared to have rubbed him the wrong way. His emotion rose just as his face changed. “Envy me?”
Before she could say anything, a tall figure suddenly barged in through the main door. Before she knew what was happening, the figure was already right in front of her.
“Leonardo?” She looked up at the man, surprised. “Why are you here?” She thought it was one of the bodyguards who had barged in at first.
Leonardo had not slept for a day, and his face was haggard. Despite that, he still had that overpowering presence. He did not answer Summer’s questions.
Instead, he looked her up and down, then breathed a sigh of relief before he turned his attention to Adams.
“You got here really fast,” said Adams. His smile was back on.
It seemed that he was the one who asked Leonardo to come over. Summer could clearly sense that Leonardo had suddenly tensed up.
She hesitated for a second behind him before she took half a step forward, reaching out to hold his hand.
Before she did, though, Leonardo had gotten hold of her hand as if he had an extra pair of eyes on the back of his head.
His hand was dry as well as warm, and it made her feel safe when he held her hand firmly in his. She looked down, a thousand and one thoughts and feelings darting across her mind.
Adams was taking all of it in with contempt in his eyes. “What a loving couple. I’m starting to feel jealous of you two. It’s hard to tell if others think the same, though.”
Leonardo’s face darkened. “Adams, do you really think I can’t do anything about you?”
“Of course, you can. But first, you’ve got to give Summer a proper identity. Otherwise, she’ll be your mistress forever.” Having said that, Adams turned his head and looked at Summer. “Summer is aspiring to become a screenwriter.
If she still carries the ‘mistress’ label, wouldn’t that affect her career?” His words pierced into Leonardo’s heart like a deadly sword.
Before the whole fiasco, Leonardo had encouraged Summer to quit her job and pursue her dream, so he had arranged her to join Tip Top.
Now, he had become the one who indirectly dragged her into a quagmire. She was now afraid of going out in public.
“Shut up!” The blue veins on Leonardo’s forehead nearly burst, but that made Adams smile even more.
“Adams!” It was Vicky’s voice.
As Summer looked back, Vicky plunged into Adams’s arms like a swiftlet into the forest canopy.
Adams caught Vicky in his arms. “Are you alright?” he asked with a gentle voice.
“I’m fine.” Vicky shook her head, a bright smile spreading across her face with a hint of shyness in her eyes. “Am I in a dream? You really came to see me!”
“No, you’re not in a dream.” Adams reached out to caress her face, gentleness almost overflowing from his eyes.
Summer looked at them with eyes on stalks. She involuntarily turned her head and looked at Leonardo. There were no changes in his expression as if the scenario in front of him did not surprise him.
Adams had noticed Summer’s stare. “Summer looks like Rachel, but I think Vicky looks even more like her. Rachel liked you so much. If she knew you married a woman who looked exactly like her, she would be very happy.” He was looking at Summer but talking to Leonardo.
Clearly, he was trying to draw a wedge between Summer and Leonardo. Summer was not a fool; she knew what he was up to.
“Not everyone is like you. When you couldn’t get what you want, you settled with a substitute.” Summer did not mince her words. “So much for your love for Rachel. You’re using the same hand that caressed her to caress another woman. Her stomach must be churning right now, no?”
“Summer!” Adams’s face collapsed, and he shouted angrily at her.
“Stop saying my name. I feel disgusted.” Her stomach churned just from the sight of him. Indeed, things that appeared unblemished on the outside were usually rotten on the inside.
Without a word, Leonardo brought Summer out of the house. Back in the car, she sulked massively, trying to shake off his hand, but his hand stuck to hers like glue.
She took a deep breath and said irritably, “Get your hands off of me!”
“I won’t.”
She came down with her mouth and bit his hand, but she forgot that Leonardo could endure the pain of removing a bullet with no anesthetic.
What was a little pain from her bite? She struggled with him until she became exhausted, yet he still did not let her go. She threw in the towel and admitted defeat.
Leonardo drew her into his arms. “Are you feeling better now?”
“No.” She froze.
“Then, let’s continue.” While he spoke, he held his hand to her mouth.
“It’s too hard.” She looked away. Men’s hands were all tough like bones.
“Haven’t you bitten something harder than this?”
She could not find the words to respond.
Leonardo was suddenly startled by what he had said. That was how he usually teased Summer, and the words just flew out of his mouth naturally.
Summer blushed big-time. Peeking at Tim, who was behind the wheel, she gave Leonardo a good punching and kicking. He did not fight back but let her be.
