Summer scanned him carefully, looking for clues. But there was none. He was almost impeccable. Still smiling, she said, “I heard you went to some remote region to do charity work not long ago. Everyone was worried when they couldn’t contact you.”
“I’m sorry about that.” His expression had not changed.
She pursed her lips, suddenly not knowing what more to say. He left no telltale on his face.
Was she thinking too much and chasing a ghost? She started to question herself.
But intuition never pops up out of thin air; there is no smoke without fire.
There was no way that Leonardo could not find anything. She trusted her own judgment.
If Adams was the one orchestrating all this, then he was a horrible person.
Sensing that Summer was studying him, Adams said, “Summer, you have many questions today.”
Her expression fleetingly stiffened, hardly visible. “Probably Leonardo is too busy lately. We don’t even have time to talk. Seeing you now, I couldn’t help but want to talk to you.” She was telling half the truth and half the lie. Besides, she wanted to sound him out.
Adams nodded with concern. “He is in charge of the entire Emerson Group. He will only get busier.”
She returned a smile and ran out of words. Adams behaved like his usual self and was impeccable. She still suspected him, but she had no proof.
…
Out of Tip Top Entertainment, she suddenly realized that Adams had never mentioned a word about the trending-topic stuff. He should have known they were a topic of gossip online by now. Not that she thought Adams was concerned about her. But judging by his personality, he should have at least asked. But he did not.
Was it because he was nervous when he heard her questions? Was it because he was thinking of handling her questions and afraid of being found out, and so he did not want to mention it? The more she thought, the more likely things seemed to be so.
While she was in thought, a car stopped in front of her. As the car window rolled down, she saw Jessica inside. She was still wearing a full set of traditional costumes.
“Jessica?” Summer looked surprised. “Did you just come straight out from a movie set?”
“No.” Jessica scanned the surroundings and hurried her inside. “Get in. Quick!”
Summer opened the car door and got inside.
While driving, Jessica asked, “Someone is digging things about you online, do you know that?”
“I’ve read it.” Summer’s face looked serious when it came to this topic.
“Have you called Big Boss?” Jessica was apparently more worried than she was.
“I have called.” But no answer.
Jessica breathed a sigh of relief.
Their car stopped in front of the traffic light. While waiting, Jessica checked her Weibo with her mobile phone.
Seeing that the post was still there, she looked over at Summer with a frown. “Did you really contact Big Boss? This guy seems to know something. The post has been forwarded so many times. Do you want to wait until the person reveals your identity? This is not funny, you know!”
She was a celebrity. Most celebrities were until public scrutiny.
But Summer was different. She might be working in the entertainment industry, but she had just started.
She was not widely known, and she was part of the Emerson family now. If the poster really revealed her identity, she would have to kiss a peaceful life goodbye, and her reputation would be tainted.
“I’ve called, but no answer,” said Summer. Not that she could do anything about it.
“Go look for him in Emerson Group.”
“I don’t think I’m going.” Summer shook her head. She did not want to disturb him while he was at work.
Jessica saw her brows knitted together and decided not to say anything more. After a while of hesitation, she called Carl.
The call was picked up almost immediately. Carl always picked up her call within the first ring.
“Jessica!”
“Someone is going to reveal Summer’s identity online. Have you all taken care of it?” Jessica asked quickly.
“We are on it now.”
“Okay.”
“You—”
Jessica hung up before Carl could say anything more.
“Carl said they are on it.” Jessica comforted her. “Big Boss is always dependable.”
Summer’s knitted brows eased up. Leonardo was busy, but he still had her in mind.
Now she started to adore him—she thought the sun rose and set on him.
Back at home, Summer went into the kitchen and started to cook.
It had been a long while since the last time she cooked for Leonardo.
After nine, Leonardo had not come home. She ate her dinner and put everything else into the refrigerator.
Summer let Ava rest for the day. She was not young anymore and could no longer stay up late at night.
Snuggling on the sofa, Summer watched the TV while waiting for Leonardo.
By the time the engine roar was heard, and a car pulled into the mansion, it was nearly midnight. She yawned, got to her feet, and entered the kitchen.
After reheating all the dishes, she brought them all onto the dining table.
The moment Leonardo stepped through the doorway, a bodyguard came up to him. “Mrs. Emerson has been waiting for the whole night. She went into the kitchen and reheated the dinner when she heard your car was coming back.”
Leonardo had been working his fingers to the bone lately and oftentimes, getting not much sleep. So Summer had made him a light and healthy meal.
He could smell the aroma of hot food the moment he stepped into the dining room.
Summer was wearing a sleeping gown, fetching dishes out of the kitchen.
Leonardo went up to help her out. Putting the dishes on the dining table, he turned around, wanting to hug her.
But he thought better of it. He had just come back from outside, his jacket cold.
Taking off his jacket, only then he drew Summer in his arms. “Go to bed early. You don’t have to wait for me.”
“Once a while.” She looked up and smiled.
He stared at her for two seconds, and then asked, “You look happy. What is it?”
“Nothing.”
She shook her head. Sitting down opposite him, she looked on as he ate.
Being busy may not create a gap and distance between two loving persons.
It is ignorance of other’s existence that causes gap and distance.
Leonardo was busy, but he still had her in mind.
And this minor thing was enough to make her happy.
Leonardo must be starving. The moment he sat down, he wolfed down his meal non-stop.
When he finally finished, she propped her chin with her hand and said, “Thank you.”
Leonardo looked up at her, puzzled.
“About the Weibo post,” she explained.
“The trending topic?” he asked, squinting at her.
Summer’s heart missed a beat, his smile gradually evaporating. “This afternoon, someone in Weibo claimed to know who was dining with Adams. The person will reveal it on Friday.”
