Chapter 182 An Unspeakable Thought

Book:CEO's Substitute Wife Published:2024-5-1

After Leonardo asked her to quit. Summer gave it serious thought and decided to do just that: quit.
After all, what she was doing in Jarrett Group was nothing but an office girl’s job: photocopying, filing, and things like that, which had nothing to do with her qualifications. Staying in Jarrett Group was meaningless and only a waste of time. After she made up her mind, she quickly put it into action.
She wrote her resignation letter that night, and the next morning, she took the letter to Alexander.
Since Alexander was back, he had been overseeing everything in the company. All small and major decisions would have to go through him. That meant Lynn had lost his power in the company.
Summer went into Alexander’s office and placed her resignation letter on the desk.
Alexander looked up at her, then at the letter. After a while of silence, he said, “What is this?”
“As you can see, I am quitting.” Summer looked at him, her voice and expression just as calm as any other day.
“Take a seat.” Alexander gestured her to the chair in front of the desk.
So, she sat down.
Alexander had talked to Summer on many occasions since the day he came home. However, this was his first time looking at her so closely. Summer was only seven when he left the country. At that time, she was already a pretty girl and outstanding in her studies. Every time she greeted him “Grandpa”, he would grin from ear to ear. But at the same time, he was a “conservative” man. Since her mother, Karen was only a stepmother, as much as he liked Summer, he loved Vicky and her brother even more.
Back then, when he heard anything about Summer, he was even more convinced that his thinking was right. It was not until he returned to the country and saw Summer that he discovered how different she was from everything he had imagined of her.
Vicky, spoiled since she was little, was nearly a basket case, and Summer, whom he had been ignoring all this while, turned out to be the mastermind behind Jarrett Group’s crisis.
Summer met his quizzical eyes. She was level-headed, so much better than Vicky was. He had broken his back to make the marriage arrangement between the Emerson and Jarrett Families come through, but Vicky squandered the opportunity and gave it to Summer. He could see that Summer was smart, composed, and self-governing. However, such a person also had a very distinctive characteristic: she was untamable.
Alexander pulled his eyes back to her resignation letter, asking, “Why do you want to quit?”
“What I’m doing now isn’t really what I’m trained for. Besides, I’m just an idler who wastes the company’s resources.” She surprised herself by giving such a perfunctory reply. She had probably gained the ability after such a long stay in Jarrett Group.
“Why do you say that? You are part of the Jarrett family. How could you be an idler when you’re working for your family’s company?” Alexander’s voice and expression were solemn.
Summer squinted, trying to make sense of what he said. Apparently, Alexander did not want Summer to leave, but she just could not work out his reason.

Her resignation attempt failed.
Summer received a call from Leonardo as she exited Alexander’s office. She went to a corner and answered the call.
“Has your resignation been accepted?” Leonardo’s voice was low and soothing.
Summer initially thought that Alexander would accept her resignation with no questions asked. But things did not turn out the way she wanted. She almost felt a lump in her throat when she heard Leonardo’s voice. “No,” she replied.
Leonardo was silent for a moment. She did not know what was on his mind.
“I’m coming to pick you up after work.”
“Mm.”
After she hung up, she suddenly had the feeling that Leonardo was not just coming to pick her up. He also wanted to help her with her resignation. She suddenly felt proud of herself; she had her guardian angel.
Summer was back in her cubicle, and she surfed Weibo since she had nothing to do. She had received a bunch of screenshots from Jessica. They were of the “Are you blind?” replies, which Leonardo purportedly posted using Carl’s Weibo account, and the netizens’ suspicion of a bromance relationship between Carl and Adams.
Summer read them a few times and went to Carl’s Weibo to take a look, finding that it was real. The popular search for “Adams’s secret lover” had become “Adams and Carl”. That was the power of the celebrity effect; Carl and Adams had become the new popular search of the day.
She switched back to Wechat and read a text from Jessica. “I knew a dog would return to its vomit!”
“Carl was into men before?” Summer was shocked. She then thought of Leonardo. He was so exploitative of Carl, yet Carl just grinned and bore it. As a result, she got a little worried. Could it be that Carl had an unspeakable thought? Was he into Leonardo?
Jessica was busy bombarding Summer with one message after another, lambasting Carl for various things and ignoring Summer’s question. Due to that, Summer felt anxious the entire afternoon.
Just about time, she got a call from Leonardo. “I’m downstairs.”
Summer immediately grabbed her handbag and ran downstairs. Leonardo had parked up in the parking lot opposite Jarrett Group, and his car window was half-lowered, revealing the side of his stony face.
Summer ran across the street and hopped into his car. Leonardo looked over at her, his face expressionless. He sorted out her bangs, which had been blown out-of-place by the wind while she was running over.
She had been waiting for the entire afternoon, and he was finally in front of her, but she found herself choking on her words. At last, she hesitantly asked, “What do you make of Carl?”
“Carl?” Leonardo thought for a moment and said, “Bad-tempered but capable.”
That was an affectionate way of calling Carl, and he complimented him too! Summer became even more worried now.
“Are the rumors about him having many women before true?”
“They’re not true.” Seeing that she kept asking about Carl, Leonardo grew suspicious.
The rumors were not true? Then they must have been a smokescreen to cover his preference for men. Her expression changed.
“Then he—”
“Summer,” Leonardo cut her off.
She looked at him, startled.
He squinted his black eyes at her. “You’ve been talking about another man since the minute you came in the car.”
“I’m just—”
“You have three seconds to please me!” Leonardo looked at her.
Three seconds?
