The investigation on the attempt to secretly photograph Jessica ended up in the NFA (no further action) category. Part of the reason was that there were a thousand and one similar cases in the entertainment industry. The police could never solve all of them.
In Jessica’s former company, and now Tip Top, Jessica had many rivalries and was in conflicts of interest with many people who could not wait to bring her down. Oscar, the movie director, was Laura’s lover, and there was no coincidence in what happened right now. Laura must have gotten the wind that Jessica was looking for Oscar’s help. She orchestrated the no-show to embarrass Jessica. It was a premeditated plan. The last bar incident was a long time ago, but Laura still wanted to pick a fight with her. She probably still held grudges against her.
“I don’t know what nonsense you’re talking about!” Laura shot Summer a glare, her voice shifting a gear higher. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Jessica could have offended someone. What does secret photography have to do with me? What’s more, isn’t she fine? Are you crazy?
“Don’t smear me with this just because Mr. Lowe doesn’t want to see you two! I will not waste my time on both of you. I’ve got to get back in.” Just as she turned to leave, she saw someone from the corner of her eyes and frowned. “Hey you, hurry up! You’ve spent ages in the washroom. Don’t let President Lowe wait.”
Summer followed Laura’s eyes. When she made out the person, she was transfixed. What was Vicky doing there? Why was she mingling with Laura?
Vicky looked bitter on her face. She had spotted Summer just now and wanted to take a detour. But Laura had caught her. She was not happy about Laura’s attitude but still put up a smile. “Here I am!”
“Hurry up! You don’t always get this opportunity. Grab it while it is here.” Laura shot Vicky a look, hissed, and walked back in.
Sensing that Summer was still looking at her, Vicky turned to shoot her a glare. “What?”
“Nothing. Just wondering what Grandpa will think of you if he knows you are mingling with these people,” said Summer with her arms folded. She looked Vicky up and down.
It was apparent that Vicky came prepared, wearing meticulous makeup and a tight-fit, low-cut dress with her Mariana Trench exposed. Putting aside her absurd conduct, she was no doubt a beauty.
“If you dare to tell Grandpa about it, I won’t let you off the hook,” Vicky threatened her.
Summer could not have cared less. She brought Jessica and wanted to go away. Just then, Vicky spoke again.
“You’d better not stick your nose where it doesn’t belong. Once I become a superstar and am married to Adams, as part of the Jarrett family, you will be proud of me.”
Before Summer could laugh, Jessica already broke out in a cackle, curling her body like a prawn.
“Superstar? You?”
Summer tried very hard not to laugh. Not that she thought Vicky’s superstar aspirations or dream of marrying Adams were laughable. It was because of the last part of her sentence, “… as part of the Jarrett family, you will be proud of me.”
As part of the Jarrett family? Since when did they treat her as part of the family? No, never. Seeing Vicky got so worked up and before she jumped down her throat, Summer grasped Jessica and left.
When Summer and Vicky were talking, Laura was at the scene. Seeing that Vicky knew Summer, she became suspicious. “Who is that woman?”
“She is nobody.” Still a bear with a sore head, Vicky did not sound nice.
However, Laura was not an idiot. She was observant, taking in every word of their conversation. “Her grandpa is also your grandpa? So she’s your sister?”
“Stepsister. My dad and grandpa don’t like her.” Vicky’s impatience was written all over her face.
Instead of getting worked up about Vicky’s attitude, Laura kept asking about Summer, “So she’s the sister who is married into the Emerson family?”
“What do you want?” Vicky sensed that Laura was up to something. Even an idiot could smell it.
Laura’s lips curled up in a greedy smile. “Your brother-in-law is the heir to the Emerson family. He has money and power. If you are thinking of doing something in the entertainment circle, why don’t you ‘look’ for him?”
“What could that cripple do?” Vicky looked scornful, writing off what Laura had said.
Laura’s lips curled up in a smirk. She thought Vicky was really an idiot. The Emerson family was the wealthiest family in Hoover City. So what even if Leonardo was ugly and a limp dick? It was money and power that mattered. If she could meet with Leonardo and won him over, she would no longer have to act like a social butterfly.
…
Summer and Jessica walked back toward their room as they talked.
“Did Vicky just hit her head somewhere? She wants to join the entertainment industry! Will your grandpa allow her to join?” Jessica asked.
“Grandpa should still be unaware of it.”
Since Alexander was back, Vicky had behaved. Alexander wielded a lot more influence over Vicky than Lynn did.
But what surprised Summer was that Vicky seemed to take a serious interest in Adams. She even went as far as joining the entertainment industry to achieve that.
“I just can’t fathom what she is thinking—” Her mobile phone rang before Jessica could finish her sentence. After answering the call, she turned to look at Summer. “Family called. Something is up and I’ve got to go home now.”
“I’ll let you go now. I can go home by myself.”
After Jessica left, Summer went back into her private dining room. Not in the mood for any more afternoon tea, she grabbed her handbag and took the elevator downstairs. As soon as the elevator doors opened on the ground floor, she saw three big men standing outside.
“Summer?”
The first man speaking was Carl. The others were Leonardo and Warren. Tired of looking at the two men working like madmen in the office, Leonardo dragged them out to hang out with him. And here they bumped into Summer.
Leonardo walked in the front. Summer’s eyes looked past him at Carl. “You all come for dinner?”
“Yeah. You… are alone?”
Judging from Carl’s hesitant look, Summer had guessed what he actually wanted to ask.
“Mm. I was with Jessica just now. But she left earlier.” Summer shifted the sling of her handbag on her shoulder. “I’ll leave you all to it.”
