Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly declined his offer. “I really appreciate your kindness, my elder brother, but it won’t be necessary. I’m running late now. I should go.” She said her goodbyes, got out of the vehicle and left.
Looking through the window, Adams watched as Summer disappeared from his field of vision, his smile dissipating. He knew there had been some conflict between Summer and Leonardo lately, all because Leonardo had lied to her. That aside, she had also addressed him as “my elder brother” because she wanted to keep a distance from him.
…
Back in the office, something continued to puzzle Summer. Why did Adams say all those weird things earlier? Besides, the way he looked at her was as if he was looking at someone else through her. She was deep in thought when Vicky made her way toward her. It was not until Vicky spoke that she returned to the real world.
“Summer, how are things going? It’s been a while since Dad last assigned you the task.” Vicky always got on her high horse in front of her with her chin skyward, constantly trying to give her a hard time.
Summer thought of what Adams said just now, squinting at Vicky and wondering why. “There’s been no progress. If you’d like, you could offer yourself and ask Dad to let you handle the case.” It was an impossible mission that Lynn had forced upon her.
Strangely, Vicky remained calm, whisking her hair to the back of her ear. “I’ll do it myself. Don’t assume that if you can’t do it, no one else can.” She was so confident in herself.
In fact, Summer thought the statement applied perfectly to Vicky.
“Good luck, then.”
Her scornful reply instantly agitated Vicky, but she left the scene before Vicky could jump down her throat.
…
Since Vicky took over the task of persuading Adams to be their brand ambassador, she rarely appeared in the office, but who cared? Summer did not give a hoot.
She was still perplexed by what Adams said the other day, but she did not really give it a second thought. She was very self-aware, thinking that Adams would not have harbored feelings toward her only after a few encounters, all the more so because there would be tons of pretty women in show business who admired him. Compared with those women, she was nobody, the most ordinary of the ordinaries.
Today, she was summoned to Lynn’s office the moment she arrived.
“Summer, come over. I have something to tell you.” He looked like a Cheshire cat.
“Dad, what’s going on?” Summer wondered what was making Lynn so happy.
“Your sister did it. She has struck a deal with Adams for him to be our brand ambassador. She must be feeling exhausted now, so I’ve decided to let you follow up on the case.” He could not help but continue smiling. “I know I can count on you!”
Summer knitted her brows. How could that be even possible? “Adams has agreed to be our brand ambassador?”
Notwithstanding Adams’s personal offer, his manager and company were not going to agree to it, considering his status. He was an actor under Tip Top Entertainment, and Carl, the CEO of Tip Top Entertainment, was not going to let allow it to spoil his own nest.
“Yes, thanks to your elder sister. You must work closely with Adams from now on.”
“I know.” Summer nodded and said nothing more.
…
Back at home, Summer headed straight to Leonardo’s study room. He would surely know about it. When she pushed the door open and walked in, Leonardo was there. He had returned not long ago too and just ended a telephone call.
Turning around, he saw her and said, “You’re back.”
“Let me ask you something.” Summer walked up to him. He gave her a subtle nod, signaling his consent, so she got straight to the point. “Do you know that Adams has accepted an offer to become Jarrett Group’s brand ambassador?”
Leonardo was transfixed for a second, but there were no changes in his expression. “I haven’t heard of it.”
“What’s going on? How could Carl allow this to happen? If Adams really accepts the job, it’ll affect his image and career!” Summer was anxious, feeling sorry for him as it was not worth it.
Leonardo looked at her for a few seconds, squinting at her. “You seem to be very concerned about him; you must be his most loyal fan.”
She ignored his tone of voice that smacked of ridicule. “So what if I’m his fan? He’s your elder cousin. Doesn’t it concern you?”
“As you’ve said, he’s my elder cousin. What could a younger cousin like me do?” He turned around and sat on the desk with an indifferent look on his face.
In Summer’s mind, Leonardo was a weirdo. He seemed to be close to Adams but did not care when this happened to Adams. It reminded her of the way he treated her; he was very unpredictable. But who cared? She did not want to speculate what he was thinking; she would never guess it, anyway.
…
Lynn had given Summer a special privilege; she did not have to worry about any other thing in the company until the deal with Adams was signed. All she had to do was see the deal through.
As soon as Summer got to the office in the morning and obtained the contact number of Adams’s manager, she went out. Having met with Sophie once, her impression of Sophie was that she was a rather serious person. She picked up her phone and called Sophie. A couple of rings later, the call was answered.
“This is Sophie, Adams’s manager.”
“This is Summer,” she said slowly.
“It’s you, Ms. Jarrett.” Apparently, Sophie still had some impression of her.
“I heard that you’ve accepted the brand ambassador deal with Jarrett Group,” Summer got straight down to business.
“Regarding that, please contact Adams directly. I’m out at the moment, but I’ll send you his address. You can go and see him.” Sophie hung up right after that without waiting for Summer to speak.
In less than a minute, Summer received the address from Sophie. It was in a wealthy area of Hoover City, where celebrities and social elites normally lived. Sophie had also left a telephone number for her so she could contact Adams directly when she made her way there-it was a guarded high-end neighborhood where no Tom, Dick, and Harry could get in.
