Those few employees went around Vicky and quickly left.
One of them must have really despised Vicky; she stretched her leg out near Vicky’s feet. As Vicky walked up to stop them, she tripped and tumbled to the floor. It was a painful fall. She tried to pull herself to her feet but fell back down twice. She flew off the handle, shouting, “I’ll fire all of you!”
Had she not heard the employees say that they were going to resign? That would probably happen before she could fire them.
From the corner of her eyes, Summer saw Lynn coming out of the elevator. She turned and went up to Vicky to hold her up. “Sis, are you alright? The fall must have hurt. The floor’s cold, let me help you up.”
Vicky shook her hand off and pushed her away, but she could barely move her. “Don’t pretend to be kind to me!”
Summer flung herself onto the floor, then pulled herself to her feet again without saying a word.
“What happened?” Lynn asked as he came.
“Daddy…” A spoiled child since little and forced to stay a night in the cell, Vicky could not help but cry in front of Lynn.
Lynn already had enough problems to deal with. Vicky tried to seduce “Douglas”, hoping that he would help Jarrett Group, but she landed herself in jail. Hence, Lynn realized that he should not place his bet on Vicky. Perhaps Summer was his better bet, he figured.
“Get up. Look at you! You’re an embarrassment!” Lynn glanced at her and looked away.
Summer extended her hand, trying to help her up. “Sis, let’s get up now…”
“Stay away from me. Don’t’ touch me with your dirty hands!” Vicky flung her hands away.
Summer pulled her hands back. Whose hands were dirtier than whose now?
Needing Summer to help Jarrett Group, Lynn was bending over backward to please her and chiding Vicky.
“Don’t talk to your younger sister like that!”
“Daddy!” Vicky was still not on her feet. “What’s wrong with you?”
The last time she checked, Lynn did not like Summer that much. Yet, he was scolding her because of Summer. What was going on?
“That’s enough. Let’s go home.” Lynn did not want to talk about it there. He had spoiled Vicky and given her free rein in the past, but the series of events lately made him question if he had overdone it.
“Then, I’ll leave now,” Summer said.
“You probably should, and don’t forget to talk to Leonardo about it.” Lynn’s attitude softened when he talked to Summer.
Summer walked out of Jarrett Group, and her face collapsed. She looked exhausted. She would not have given a hoot if Lynn continued to give her the cold shoulder. However, her heart sank again when he pleased her just to make use of her.
Back at home, Summer saw “Douglas” sitting on the sofa. Surprised, she asked, “You’re home?”
“Mm.” Leonardo glanced up at her. Seeing no changes in her expression, his mood plunged.
“I have to prepare dinner.” Summer went into the kitchen, not noticing his expression.
Just then, Tim arrived at the mansion to deliver some documents. Seeing Leonardo sitting on the sofa, Tim asked, “Should I put the things in your room, Young Master?”
Leonardo did not say a word. Tim took the hint, turned, and headed upstairs. At that moment, Leonardo said, “Tim, would your wife be mad at you if you don’t go home for the whole night?”
The question stunned Tim for a while. He then replied, “Young Master, I’m divorced.”
“When did that happen?” Leonardo looked up at him. He and his wife used to be a happy couple. Tim would always bring her souvenirs when he came back from trips abroad.
“Half a year ago.” Tim apparently did not want to talk about it. But when Carl told him that the young master did not go home last night and Leonardo’s problem came to mind, Tim suddenly put two and two together. He was hesitant for a while but still decided to give the young master his two cents.
“Young Master, you are now the’cousin’. The’cousin’ not coming home shouldn’t have concerned Mrs. Emerson.”
Upon hearing that, Leonardo’s face collapsed. Tim kept his head down; what he said was the truth.
“You can leave now.” Leonardo looked at him, his face stone-cold.
It looked like he should not have said that, even though it was the truth. Leonardo could not take those words, especially with the current circumstances.
During dinner, Summer noticed that “Douglas” ate very little. He was just staring at her. She reached out to check her face.
“What’s wrong?”
“Douglas” shot her a glance, got to his feet, and went upstairs. He did not take his dinner.
Summer was bewildered. As she finished her dinner, she got a call from her landlord. The middle-aged woman spoke in a gruff voice.
“It’s time to pay the utility bills. When will you come over?”
“I haven’t been staying there for the past month. There shouldn’t be any bills, I guess?” She had been staying in the mansion, but the unit she rented was on contract, so she could not end the tenancy agreement just yet.
The landlord did not sound too happy with her reply. “Are you bullshitting or what? I saw light inside your house last night!”
Summer’s heart skipped a beat. Had there been a burglary? She tried not to argue with the landlord. She said, “Alright, I’ll be there tomorrow.”
The next morning, she took a day off and headed to her rented house. Arriving at the front door, she put her ear against the door, trying to hear if there was any sound inside. There was nothing she could make out, so she pushed the door open and went in. She froze.
The house was a mess. Food packaged and snack wrappers were strewn on the floor. There was even a video game console on the table. It was not a burglary. Some alien must have invaded her house. There was no space for her to even lay her feet on. Suddenly, a young voice came behind her.
“Who are you?”
Summer looked back and saw a teenager standing at the doorway. He was skinny and had curly, messy hair. His skin was fair and clean. He was definitely good-looking. She could even recognize the clothes he was wearing; it was the same brand as the clothes that “Douglas” always wore.
“I rent this place. Who are you?”
The teenager looked about fourteen or fifteen. Summer did not find him much of a threat.
The teenager walked in and put the things in his hand on the coffee table. He then helped himself onto the couch as if he owned the place. Seemingly sensing Summer’s stare, he looked up.
“You’re pretty. Do you have a boyfriend?”
“I…” Summer suddenly realized that she had to figure out who this boy was. Judging by his appearance, he had probably just run away from his family. “Why are you here? Where are your parents?”
The teenager ignored her question. “My name is Douglas Emerson, what’s yours?”
What? Douglas Emerson?
Seeing Summer’s reaction, the teenager looked annoyed. “Hey, I know I’m related to the Emerson family, but you shouldn’t be so surprised!”
