Unfortunately, “Douglas” stood at 1. 9 meters, and his face protruded out behind Summer.
Vicky stared at Summer disdainfully before she stepped forward, looking straight at “Douglas”. “Mr. Emerson, nice to meet you again.”
Leonardo looked at Vicky, then at Summer. He suddenly realized why Summer had to stand in front of him. He remembered her saying something like the wife of the elder brother was akin to the mother of his younger brothers. So, was she acting like she was the mother and he, the son now? The thought sent the expression on his face further down the Fahrenheit readings; he did not even care to glance at Vicky.
Getting the cold shoulder, Vicky was in an awkward spot. Just then, Lynn spoke, “Why don’t we find a restaurant, sit down, and talk?”
So, off they went to a restaurant. Everyone was conscious to let “Douglas” take his seat first. Instead of sitting down, “Douglas” pulled out a chair for Summer. She had no idea what he was up to, but deep inside, she knew that “Douglas” was not going to prank her or do something similar. Hence, she took a seat, followed by “Douglas” next to her.
Lynn glanced at Vicky, who got the hint and proceeded to sit down next to “Douglas”, smiling the entire time.
Summer thought that “Douglas” was going to say something, but he did not. It was as though he was unaware that Vicky had sat down beside him.
Summer got hot under the collar due to his reaction, or rather lack of it. Could she have been mistaken? Was “Douglas” really not that choosy when it came to women, despite his condescension?
Before long, food was served. Lynn tried his best to keep the conversation going while Vicky fetched “Douglas” food, which he neither declined nor ate.
It all looked strange in Summer’s eyes. Since the minute “Douglas” sat down, she had felt a compromising air around him. Although he did not stop Vicky from passing him the food, she did not believe that he had taken a liking to Vicky.
On the other hand, Vicky was overjoyed. Her smile was even more mellow now. “Mr. Emerson, please eat. This restaurant makes very savory dishes.”
“Mm,” “Douglas” responded nonchalantly, but he still did not touch his chopsticks.
That did not bother Vicky at all. She continued to make advances. “Mr. Emerson, do you have a girlfriend?”
The blunt question did not seem to faze “Douglas” at all. He turned to look at her. “Not yet. What about you?”
“Me too. I don’t have a boyfriend. To be honest, I…” Vicky smiled bashfully. “I’ve admired you for a long time.”
“Oh, really?” Leonardo smirked, his half-smile mixed with a hint of scorn. His voice was low and ghastly. “But I like women with large faces. Miss Emerson, your face is too small.”
Vicky was so enthused that her eyes were wide open and about to fall to the floor at any moment. Summer was drinking halfway when she heard what “Douglas” said. She nearly spat all over the place. What the heck was “Douglas” doing?
She glanced over at the man beside her; looking from the side, he was nodding and appearing very serious.
“I can gain weight, make my face larger.” Vicky was so excited that her voice trembled. At the same time, she did not forget to throw a victorious look at Summer. She was confident about winning “Douglas’s” heart.
Summer looked away.
“Oh, really?” Leonardo looked down to conceal his steely expression. He then absent-mindedly said, “There’s a faster way to do it. Perhaps Mrs. Emerson might want to give it a shot.”
Vicky thought it was for real and quickly asked, “How?”
Leonardo turned to look at Summer. “The same thing you did to her.”
Vicky looked at Summer, unsure by what he meant. It was Lynn who put two and two together and said, “Mr. Emerson has a great sense of humor. Come, let’s eat. The dishes are getting cold.”
Leonardo did not even look at Lynn, his face turning stone cold. His handsome face had an added hint of sternness to it, and his strong persona was overpowering. For a moment, no one dared to utter a word.
Leonardo was unruffled. He stared coldly at Vicky, still sounding indifferent. “You can do it yourself because I’m not hitting a woman.”
“Mr. Emerson, is this a joke?”
“A joke?” Leonardo scowled. There was anything but a smile on his face. “Do you think the Emerson family will allow all of you to make fun of the woman, whom we’ve spent three hundred million on in dowry?”
It only started to dawn on them why “Douglas” joined them for dinner. Summer looked at him in shock. She never expected “Douglas” to stand up for her. She had only learned today that the Emerson family had given three hundred million in dowry to the Jarretts. Although that kind of money meant nothing to the Emersons, it was a lifeline for the Jarrett family.
Since “Douglas” was so forthright, as the head of the family, Lynn had to say something to save the situation. “This is what happened earlier; as you know, Summer and Vicky are sisters. Summer did something wrong, and Vicky just taught her a lesson out of sisterly love…”
“Mr. Jarrett, you must be so senile that you’ve failed to grasp what I mean.” Leonardo looked up slightly, his eyes piercingly sharp.
The expression on Lynn’s face collapsed. He had never expected his “Douglas” to become that arrogant and disrespectful. He looked at Summer as if he was in a dilemma. “Summer…”
Summer ignored him. She grabbed a big chunk of pumpkin cake and tucked in.
Everyone began to come to their senses; things could become ugly from now on. Lynn was silent, and his brows were knitted together. Right then, Karen broke the silence.
“Mr. Emerson, for my sake as Summer’s mother, please let Vicky off the hook this time. Summer…”
Leonardo lost his last drop of patience. “the Jarrett Group suffered huge losses in a recent investment venture, causing a capital chain rupture. It needs immediate funding. If your rivals find out, what do you think they’ll do?”
Lynn’s face turned pale. The capital chain rupture in the Jarrett Group was an internal secret. How did “Douglas” know about it? If their rivals found out, they would surely take advantage of the situation, and by then, the Jarrett Group would have its back against the wall.
Lynn gritted his teeth. “Vicky, do it yourself!”
“Daddy!” Vicky looked at him in disbelief.
Seeing that Vicky was not going comply, Lynn got to his feet, went over, and gave her the “good news”-a really hard slap on the face.
Leonardo listlessly said, “There’s another side.”
Without saying a word, Lynn slapped Vicky on the other cheek.
However, Leonardo was not satisfied. “The left is more swollen than the right. It doesn’t look right.”
So, Lynn gave Vicky some more “good news”.
