Leonardo had actually left at first. However, the thought of what Vicky did the last time brought him back, and it turned out… he returned to witness a drama unfold. For the first time in his life, except for his mother, a woman had been protective of him. It felt good.
…
Summer was wearing three- or four-centimeter leather high heels, so they did not cause a lot of damage to Vicky’s toes, but Vicky could not stomach it. Summer was supposed to be the humble one before her. How dare Summer, the b*tch step on her toes, she thought to herself.
As soon as she ran into the lobby, she saw that the elevator had arrived. Summer looked back at her and smiled provocatively at her before she walked into the elevator. By the time Vicky ran over, the elevator had already closed its doors and was on its way up.
The moment Summer emerged from the elevator, she went straight into Lynn’s office. She still remembered his call for her to see him in his office last Friday, presumably to rebuke her for skipping work that day.
It did not take long before Lynn came in with Vicky close behind. They did not know that Summer was already there as Vicky complained to Lynn, saying, “Daddy, Summer’s gone over the top with what she’s done. I know I’m hot-tempered sometimes, but how could she treat me like that? It doesn’t matter if I’m the project manager. I’m just afraid that she doesn’t even respect you…”
Summer sat on the couch, tilting her head and watching the father-daughter pair walk into the office. She had to disagree with Vicky on that. No, she was not so much hot-tempered as she was wicked.
“Sis, you’re very wrong. I respect Dad the most.”
They only realized that Summer was in the office when they heard her voice. Vicky was wide-eyed. “Why are you here?”
“Dad has something to discuss with me, so here I am.” Summer wore an innocent smile.
Vicky was finally convinced that all her turning-the-other-cheek and grinning-and-bearing-it was just a ruse.
What Vicky told him earlier had already started to get on his nerves. Now, seeing Summer sitting here, his face fell. “This is the president’s office, not some place where you can come and go on a whim!”
Summer got to her feet, walked out, and closed the door behind her. She left Lynn and Vicky to look at each other, wondering what she was up to.
The next second, there were two knocks on the door followed by Summer’s polite voice. “Mr. President, this is Summer. Can I come in now?”
Summer was making his blood boil. Lynn walked behind his desk and sat down, pointing at the door. “Vicky, let her come in.”
Vicky was just as pissed off as her father. Reluctantly, she shouted at the door, “Come in!”
However, Summer did not come in. Vicky went to open the door only to find that Summer had disappeared. She gritted her teeth, looking back at Lynn and trying to suppress her anger. “Dad, she’s gone.”
By then, Summer had returned to her cubicle. Stone was nowhere to be seen. It was only after a while that the manager came over and announced, “Everyone, get ready for the meeting.”
It was a Monday routine meeting, which had nothing to do with her, Summer thought to herself. After all, she was only small fry.
Not long after the meeting, Lynn and Vicky, along with Stone, came to the Marketing Department. Her gut feeling told her that their arrival was not a good thing, and it possibly had something to do with her. True to her suspicion, Vicky looked at her with a cold expression.
“Summer, get over her.”
Summer looked at the three of them, got to her feet, and approached them. Before she could get near, Vicky stepped out and slapped her across the face. “Do you know why I slapped you?” Her voice was stern.
With her hand on her face, Summer felt a numbness crawl across her face. It was only after two seconds that she turned and looked at Vicky. She could sense from Vicky’s eyes that she was gloating despite the self-righteous look on her face.
“I know that working in the Marketing Department is hard work, but you’re my younger sister, and we are all one family. Since you’ve taken up the job, you should be a good role model for others. How absurd it is for you to skip work on the very first day of work?!”
When it came to trouble, she would suddenly become a part of the Jarrett family. How convenient, she thought to herself. Summer smirked, looking coldly at Vicky.
“It was my fault yesterday…” There was a pause before Summer continued, “I must have caused trouble for that male colleague who went to the field job with me. I’d like to apologize to him. Can I?”
It surprised Vicky that Summer was suddenly submitting to them. Just then, Stone approached her and whispered into her ear.
“The man isn’t an employee of the company.”
Stone did not send someone from the company because he did not want the matter to be traced back to Lynn if things went wrong. As much as Lynn did not appreciate Mu Summer, she was still his daughter. It was only proper that he kept things under wraps as much as possible.
Vicky frowned when she heard the manager’s words. She then said, “Mr. Sun says that the colleague you’ve mentioned is on medical leave.”
Lynn, who had been silent the entire time demanded, “What medical leave? Is he so ill that he has to take leave on a Monday?”
Every Monday, each department would hold a routine meeting to assign tasks and the like. Everyone understood that no one should take leave on that day.
Stone’s expression changed, and his voice started to sound hesitant. “I’m not so sure. There are so many employees in the department. Let me check, then.”
“In that case, Mr. Sun, please tell me the name of that colleague so that I can pay him a visit after work,” Summer said.
Lynn sensed that Summer’s attitude had taken a change for the better and that this daughter of his was different from before. He figured that he should not drive her up the wall. Delighted with Summer’s demeanor, Lynn asked, “Who among the teams has taken leave today?”
No one spoke. Stone was starting to feel cold sweat trickling down his forehead. Just as Lynn was visibly losing his patience, one of the team leaders spoke, “One among us has taken leave.”
Everyone in the team looked at each other because things did not add up. Summer had just said that it was a male colleague, but their on-leave teammate was a woman.
“Okay, let Summer have the contact number of the employee afterward so that she can visit him after work.” With that said, Lynn scanned the room. “Relax, everyone. You can still take the day off if there’s an emergency. the Jarrett Group is like a family. We are all in a big family…”
After a pompous speech, Lynn and Vicky left. Before leaving, Vicky did not forget to shoot a victorious smile at Summer, not knowing that things had been partially exposed.
