Chapter 38 Making It Into the Hot Searches Again

Book:CEO's Substitute Wife Published:2024-5-1

Summer did not like how Jessica described “Douglas”. “Bah! It’s just skin-deep.”
However, Jessica shook her head with an inscrutable expression on her face. “I don’t think you wouldn’t be attracted to his skin-deep good looks, even if it’s just a little…” She made a corresponding hand gesture, looking like a little hooligan.
Attracted by his looks? You look at handsome men the way you would look at flowers by the roadside. There is nothing special about it, Summer thought to herself.
“I haven’t met Leonardo yet. He is a Emerson, and I’m sure he was handsome before his disfigurement.” Deep inside, Summer took pity on her husband whom she had yet to meet.
“You haven’t met him? Are you guys a real couple? It’s been three months since you married into the Emerson family!” Shocked, Jessica gulped down a glass of water. As if she had thought of something, Jessica continued, “But let me tell you what, I think the way Douglas treats you is unusual. When he looked at me, it was cold and ruthless, but when it came to you, he was a lot gentler.”
Douglas treated her gently? Summer shook her head. “You must be out of your mind.”
Just as Jessica was about to retort, her phone rang. It was her manager. After the call, she looked reluctant. “An emergency meeting is come up back at the office, but we’ve barely had lunch together.”
Summer consoled her. “It’s okay. We’ll wait till you finish your movie shoot. Lunch is on me.”

After parting with Jessica, Summer headed back to the mansion. The moment she stepped into the doorway, she saw “Douglas” in the living room. He still looked unwell, and he was dressed casually and sitting in front of a laptop with a glass of water next to him. His face was grave, and Summer could not help but sigh. Is this guy made of steel? She thought to herself. The last time she removed the bullet from his body, he had a high fever and fell unconscious. After an injection, he got up to work right away.
Leonardo looked up as if he had sensed her stares, and their eyes met. “You’re home!” His voice was hoarse, but that did not weaken his powerful persona.
Summer stood about three to four meters away, glancing at his laptop and asking, “You’re working? You okay now?” Apart from his pale face, he did not really look like a patient.
“I’m fine.” He tapped the keyboard, looked up, and stared at her. “Just a little hungry.”
Summer remembered the call earlier. She wanted to say that his bodyguard could have cooked for him. “You can-”
But “Douglas” knew what she was going to say and cut her off. “It sucks!”
Summer got what he meant despite the short answer. He was saying that his bodyguard was a bad cook.
Tim came out with his medication when he overheard Leonardo say “It sucks!” All he could respond with was a shrug. The young master had never told them that their cooking sucked before, but things changed after he married his wife. Truth be told, apart from the fact that she was ugly as hell, he could find nothing unique about her. Yet, the young master did not despise her. He even seemed to take a liking to her. That was why an underling like him was respectful to her.
Summer checked the time; it was almost two in the afternoon. Seeing Tim still there, she froze for a while. “Is Leonardo home?”
“Hmm,” “Douglas” replied instead.
Surprised, Summer asked, “Has he eaten his lunch?”
Leonardo took the glass in his hand, glanced back at Tim, and gulped down the water.
“Young Master hasn’t had lunch.” Tim began to admire his own clever response.
Excitement flashed in Summer’s eyes. “Let me make something and bring it up to him.” After she said that, she scurried into the kitchen. The last time she cooked for Leonardo, his cousin, “Douglas” had snapped it up.
Seeing her reaction, “Douglas” found himself envious of Leonardo.
Tim wanted to hand him the medication, but Leonardo did not take it. He looked at Tim, face serious. “Tell me, is she an idiot or what? Why does she want to butter up a cripple instead of a healthy man like me? Or is she faking it?”
The young master had been an unaffectionate lone man all this while, but since Summer’s arrival, he had changed. Tim noticed that he liked to jab her now and then, and began to question the young master’s aesthetic preference. Nevertheless, all Tim dared to say was “Young Master, you’re paying quite the attention to your wife.”
Leonardo smirked. Of course, he knew what Tim meant.
Seeing Leonardo’s reaction, Tim quickly said, “She’s not as dumb as we think. Just look at how she dealt with Vicky; it was elaborate.”
“Elaborate?” How could the Emerson family sit by and do nothing had he not helped Summer in secret? Not to forget, that she was married into the Emerson family, whose face was more important than anything else.

Summer did not really believe “Douglas” about Leonardo liking spicy food. So, she made a pot of veggie porridge and some healthy vegetarian dishes. It did not matter what Leonardo liked, making it healthy was a surefire way. She divided each dish into two parts; one part she placed on a tray, and the rest on the dining table.
Tim stood at the kitchen entrance and peered over before he walked in with a smile. “Mrs. Emerson, let me do the honors.”
Summer handed the tray of food to Tim and asked, “Is he going out late in the afternoon?”
“I have no idea.” Having had to lie all the while, Tim began to feel bad. When were the lies going to end?
After Tim left, “Douglas” came in and sat at the table. Looking at the bland spread of veggie porridge and dishes, he frowned. “Is this all?”
Summer poured him a glass of hot water and put it in front of him, her voice sounding serious as she spoke, “If not? Don’t even think about hot pot now. You’re a patient. Don’t blame me if you die because of that.” She felt bad for saying that, but hell, who cared!
To her surprise, “Douglas” did not make a fuss again. He took a spoon and dug in.
Summer stood at the table, looking at him as he ate like a pig. Based on his appetite, he did not look like a patient. Perhaps, to “Douglas”, there was only life and death; sickness and injury meant little to him. He was truly a man of steel.
Someone would clean up when he finished, so Summer went back to her room. She turned on her computer and was surprised. Vicky’s sex scandal had made it into the hot searches again. She did a double-take and was extremely sure that her eyes were not playing tricks on her. The first thought that came to mind was Jessica had to have spent money on this.
