“Douglas” had followed Summer around after the press conference, so she did not have a chance to watch her own interview yet. Switching on the computer, she surfed the Internet and found that the interview was on major news platforms. It had been reproduced by many people on social media.
Most people commented negatively, but there were more rational ones who had analyzed her replies.
“I knew it was a publicity stunt. Those who said she was the victim got a slap in the face!”
“Wearing a mask during an interview; what a poser!”
“Am I the only one who thinks how this woman rebuffed the reporter was cool?”
“I noticed that she never actually admitted to stealing her elder sister’s fiance.”
Summer could not help but smirk as she read that last comment. She purposely ignored the elephant in the room. Who knew, if she had admitted to stealing Vicky’s fiance, she could have dug her own grave because Vicky would probably use it against her.
Since she was in the mood, Summer continued reading.
“Is this the drama series of the year? I need more popcorn, then. Looking forward to the next episode.”
Ever since Summer realized the Emerson family’s true colors, she refused to groan and bear it, so it looked like things had just begun.
Not long after, the online comments started to become mostly critical of her. Summer knew that Vicky was hiring her cyberwarriors, but she was not concerned. She was well aware that Vicky was no saint; they were in the same family, and she knew of the many skeletons in Vicky’s closet. She would allow the Emerson family to have their tails up for one more day before she dumped their dirty linens in public. She wanted Vicky’s name to be forever tainted.
After browsing for a while, she logged in to her email and found an unread mail. She opened it and was transfixed. It was a job-interview offer from Tip Top Entertainment Group. She could not remember ever sending a job application to Tip Top. She triple-checked her outbox and was dead sure that she did not send them her resume. It was perplexing.
Then, Summer thought of “Douglas”. He had brought her to lunch with Carl Jones. Checking the date and time of the email, it came at 9:00 in the morning when she was at the press conference. She pondered for a moment and decided to find out from “Douglas”.
…
Leonardo was sitting on the sofa in the living hall, playing his favorite games while Tim was standing beside him, holding the phone with the speaker on. Carl Jones was yelling on the other end, “I only had lunch with your young master, but when I got back to the office, the few directors gave me a hard time for it. Tell him, if he still refuses to come back, I’m going to jump off the building!”
Tim glanced at Leonardo and replied calmly, “The young master is busy right now.”
Carl Jones did not buy it. “Busy my foot! What’s he doing now? Turn on the camera and let me have a look!”
“Turn it on,” Leonardo chimed in.
The young master was going to piss Carl Jones off even more, Tim thought. He had no choice but to switch on the camera.
Seeing Leonardo play games on the sofa, Carl Jones jumped to his feet and blurted out, “Those old men in the office are getting on my nerves while you’re playing games at home!”
“So?” While he spoke, he saw Summer walking down the stairs from the corner of his eyes. He gave Tim a look.
Tim got the hint and turned off the speaker. “Mr. Jones, I have to hang up now.”
Through the phone’s camera, Carl Jones had also seen Summer coming down the stairs. He was too curious about what was happening between Summer and Leonardo, so he threatened Tim, “I’m going to jump off the building if you hang up on me!”
However, Tim knew very well that even if he hung up on him, Carl Jones would not take his own life for real. Nonetheless, he made an exception this time by keeping the phone and its camera on.
When Summer reached the landing on the second floor, she saw “Douglas” downstairs and decided to come down. Only then did she see Tim there as well. But, Tim’s attention was on the phone, hence she approached “Douglas” and sat directly opposite him. “I have something to ask you.”
Leonardo glanced up at her and shifted his eyes back to the game again. “What is it?”
She carefully asked, “Do you know Mr. Jones of Tip Top very well?”
Leonardo froze for two seconds. It was during those two seconds that his opponents caught up with him. It was game over. He put his phone aside and looked at Summer with a half-smile. “Are you taking a liking to him?”
Summer frowned. “Could you be more serious?”
Leonardo leaned lazily on the sofa with his hands spread across the backrest. “Come, sit next to me.”
“If you’re not going to tell me, just forget it.” Summer got to her feet.
After a couple of steps, she heard Leonardo saying, “I know you’re looking for a job. Is it about the invitation for the job interview?”
Summer stopped dead in her tracks and looked back at him in shock. “How did you know about that?”
“Well, Carl Jones told me that his company needed some new blood and was in the midst of selecting some fresh graduates.” After he said that, Leonardo looked her up and down before he frowned. “So you’ve received an invitation from them too, huh?”
Despite the lack of change in his expression, Summer could still read the disdain in his eyes. She smirked, also putting on a half-smile. “I don’t think I’m going.” Then, she walked away without looking back.
Leonardo squinted at Summer as she disappeared up the stairs. He sat in the same position for a while, wondering how the ugly woman dared to turn her back on him.
Tim knew Leonardo well enough to sense the stillness in the air-the young master was pissed off. The moment he realized it, he wanted to hang up the phone, but Carl Jones hung up on him first. The next second, a phone rang loudly in the living room.
Leonardo took his phone and saw that it was Carl Jones calling. He answered in an icy tone, “If you want to jump off the building, do it now. You don’t have to tell me that.” However, the response he got was a peal of perverted laughter.
“Look at how bad you treat me all the time. Now, even your wife doesn’t want to go through the back door you’ve opened for her. Aren’t you furious? I especially enjoy seeing you mad. I just can’t hold back my laughter.”
Leonardo smirked and said, “I’m not going back to the office until my wife joins Tip Top.”
When he heard that, Carl Jones flinched. “My bad…” But, all he heard was the disconnect tone.
