“By the way, how did you know I’m here?”
After all, a place like the night market was not somewhere where people with Shang Jinshen’s status would often show up.
Ji Yan met Shang Jinshen’s eyes and tried to make herself look relaxed. If Shang Jinshen was following her, she did not have to worry that he would misunderstand the situation.
“I was just passing by,” Shang Jinshen answered casually and then sat up straight. “When I saw you come out of the hotel, I thought I had mistaken you for someone else.”
He sneered and said, “I didn’t expect my woman to have such bad taste.”
Ji Yan blushed because of Shang Jinshen’s words, then she immediately stopped talking. She knew that he was still upset about what had happened in the morning.
In fact, Ji Yan calmed down after the incident and felt that what she said in the morning was a bit too much as well.
She wanted to lower her pride to apologize, but after glancing at Shang Jinshen’s cold face, Ji Yan decided to give up. She knew better than anyone else that at this time, no matter what she said, it was useless.
It was futile to apologize as well because Shang Jinshen didn’t care about it at all!
Along the way, both of them didn’t speak a word. The quiet but tense atmosphere in the car made Ji Yan feel somewhat uneasy and unsettled.
When the car drove into the Shang family manor, Ji Yan’s heart began to feel uneasy. Her hands kept twisting. Shang Jinshen, who was on the side, saw it, and a hint of craftiness flashed through his eyes.
The butler got out of the car and opened the door. The assistant was about to push Shang Jinshen into the room, but Ji Yan was a step ahead of him.
“Let me do it.”
Ji Yan spoke as she held the handles of the wheelchair. She looked down at Shang Jinshen’s terrifying profile and saw that he didn’t refuse, so she pushed the wheelchair into the manor.
As soon as she entered the manor, Ji Yan knew that things were not going well. Madam Zhang stood behind Mrs. Shang and looked at Ji Yan with a worried face, while Mrs. Shang and Dr. Smith were sitting on the sofa.
“Mother, why haven’t you slept yet?” Shang Jinshen asked first.
Mrs. Shang took a deep breath and looked at Ji Yan.
“Do you know that Dr. Smith has been waiting for you all night?” Mrs. Shang stared at Ji Yan. “If I had known that you didn’t care about your life, others would not have had to work so hard.”
Ji Yan looked at Dr. Smith with some embarrassment. It was not the day for her check-up!
“Madam Ji Yan, you just had an operation yesterday. Why did you go to work today?”
Dr. Smith stood up and walked over to Ji Yan. “Madam Ji Yan, although it’s a small operation, the recuperation process will affect the probability of your getting pregnant in the future.”
Pregnant? Ji Yan felt as if her heart was caught by a pair of invisible hands in an instant. She subconsciously looked at Mrs. Shang, only to see that she had bounced up from the sofa in anger.
“How long were you going to hide this from me?” Mrs. Shang looked at Shang Jinshen with reddened eyes. “Jinhen, tell me the truth. Did you already know?”
Shang Jinshen looked back at Ji Yan and then at Mrs. Shang. “Mother, I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“My silly son!” Mrs. Shang came over and pushed Ji Yan away. “This idiot killed your child! If she can’t even keep your child, what’s the use of keeping her in our family?”
As Mrs. Shang spoke, she glared hatefully at Ji Yan.
“So you’re referring to this matter.” A hint of a playful smile appeared on Shang Jinshen’s lips. He then patted Mrs. Shang’s hand and said, “Mother, please don’t be too angry. After all, that’s not my child.”
Shang Jinshen’s words were like a flash of thunder, a lightning strike causing a violent chemical reaction in the air.
For a moment, everyone’s eyes widened as they stared at Shang Jinshen.
However, the butler kept calm. He walked to Dr. Smith and gestured for him to leave.
“Thank you for your hard work, Dr. Smith. We have some family business to attend to. I’ll ask the driver to send you back first.”
“Okay!”
With a “bang”, the door was closed. Danger crept into the stilled air again after Dr. Smith left.
Ji Yan stood rooted at where she was, her hands and feet icy cold. She felt like she could faint at any moment. She looked at Shang Jinshen incredulously. Hadn’t he said that it was all in the past?
On that day, Shang Jinshen had said he didn’t want to know about her past, and he didn’t care about it either.
But why… Why did he mention it again at this time?
“Jinshen, are you telling the truth?” Mrs. Shang rushed to Shang Jinshen and said, “Son, you can’t joke about something like this.”
Shang Jinshen rolled his wheelchair away, his eyes fixed on Ji Yan.
“I’m very sure that the child is not mine,” Shang Jinshen said as he looked at Mrs. Shang. “Mother, did you hear me clearly this time?”
