“Wait, what?”
Rafael asked, she could tell he was offended by what she just said but that’s was it, he shouldn’t have arrested her twin, it wasn’t intentional, Natalie couldn’t and shouldn’t be blamed for what happened because it wasn’t right, it was an accident, if only she had tried to talk to her more calmly maybe it would not have happened.
“I said let Natalie go,”
She said again.
“You, you must be kidding me, Nicole, you are kidding me, right? You can’t have just said what I heard right? Ain’t no way you are saying that right?”
He asked in an annoyed tone, she understood his anger but she wasn’t about to sit and let him arrest her sister no matter what, not on her watch.
“You heard me Rafael, let my sister go, she didn’t do it intentionally, it was an accident, you can’t lock her up,”
She let out, she was still in pain finding out her child was no more but that didn’t mean she would watch her sister get punished because of an accident that no one saw coming.
“I am not going to do that, even if you think it’s an accident, I don’t think so, and this is my child we are talking about here, you don’t get to make the decision, not on this one, my child died and I am going to get justice,”
He yelled at her, she blinked at his words, well it wasn’t his decision to make either, the baby had been living inside her up until the moment it was no more.
“I get to make every decision Rafael, I am the victim here and I don’t want anyone arrested, Natalie is my sister, I don’t want her going to jail.”
She fired at him.
“That’s where you are wrong, this isn’t it, you aren’t the victim, the victim here is my unborn child that your sister killed and I am going to get justice for my baby and you better start thinking properly because your sister already talked, you can’t cover for her when our child died and you almost did.”
“She didn’t do it, if she confessed then it’s either because she felt guilty or you pushed her into saying she did it.”
Nicole responded, she knew she shouldn’t be using words that would provoke him further but he wasn’t even listening to her, he got up and walked up and down the hospital room, he was angry she could tell but that wasn’t going to stop her, Natalie did things wrong but it wasn’t her fault she fell, it was both of them, it just happened even though the loss of her baby was hard for her to bear, she couldn’t watch her sister suffer.
“Rafael, let Natalie go,”
She urged, he stopped and glared at her, she held her ground, she understood why he was angry but it was wrong to assume Natalie did that and lick her up, she was unconscious for three whole days which means Natalie has been in police custody for three days, that made her feel guilty, it was a misunderstanding, it was her fault for provoking Natalie which had lead to the fight, she should have done better, shouldn’t have gone to the house in the first place, if anyone is to be blamed it should be her, she was the one that went to Natalie not the other way round.
“I am not going to do that,”
“If you are not going to, I will do it, I won’t let my sister suffer in jail, you got it all wrong, Natalie might be a lot of things but she isn’t like that, she didn’t even know I was pregnant so why would she had pushed me?”
“I don’t fucking care, I am not letting her off,”
He yelled at her.
“I care, I care about my sister,”
“What about our baby, the real victim here? You don’t care about our child?”
“How can you say that? You know I care,”
“Well, it’s not showing since you want to key the person that killed yet go score free,”
“For the last time, Natalie didn’t kill anyone, why can’t you just believe me?”
“You are asking me that? So who is going to pay for the death of my child? Who?”
“No, one, no one because it was an accident, an accident happens, no one plans for it, it just happens, and no one should be blamed, just give me the police station number and retract your charges, I am the one who is involved and I am saying that’s not what happened,”
She pleaded, he gave her his phone.
“Here, do it yourself, but just so you know, if you don’t give the statement and Natalie gets released, don’t expect to see me here again,”
He threatened, she collected the number and gave him back his phone, she didn’t take his words to heart, he was just angry and hurt by the lost of their child, she understood, he won’t leave her, he won’t do that to her, he loved her too much, she ignored him and called the police station, he left while she was still talking to the officers, she felt he needed time to come around and he will be back soon, but he never did come back, throughout the two weeks she spent at the hospital, he didn’t show up again, Natalie was released, her parents told her so but Rafael ignored her completely, she expected him to come around, everyday, she expected him to show up at the hospital he never did, she mourned the loss of her child alone while nursing herself back to health, it wasn’t easy, if not for the nurses, doctors, parents and Grace who had come by after her exams ended, she didn’t think she would have made it, she tired to reach out to her husband but he didn’t respond, he left her all by herself…
