Tom was going through some documents in his office when he noticed a particular file missing. He went to check Amber’s desk at her office and found it beside the mini calendar on her table, he was about leaving for his office when he noticed a small circle on the calendar.
Upon checking it well, he saw that it was her birthday she circled. He just went back to his office without adding any meaning to it but after sometimes, it began to linger in his mind. He pondered about what to get her as a birthday gift and he realized that he had never gifted her one.
He made a reservation at the restaurant and told them to get a cake ready for that day. She didn’t even know that it was her birthday because she had been so busy and he noticed it too, he was slightly happy that it would at least be a genuine surprise for her.
He made her leave work early before she actually gets a whim of it by looking at her calendar and brought her to the restaurant.
Hearing her randomly talk about her experience in Paris, he listened with rapt attention and he was enjoying all the words she was saying. For some reasons, she had been lingering on her mind for quite a while. He wondered if it was because they are now in a deal and communicate often or the fact that they are now around each other frequently even when it’s not related to work.
He also remembered the fact that she kissed him a little in the car the other day even though she had pretended it was a mistake and it never happened. The woman sitting in front of him has been melting his cold heart for quite a while. He never thought much into it but seeing how he was sitting there listening to her, waiting for a surprise he had planned to make her happy when the only thing he knew how to do was work, he realized something was changing about him.
He’s in love with the woman in front of him!
“What if I want to change the reason?” he find himself asking when she replied she acted that way because he was her boss but he didn’t have a chance to get his answer before they came in with the cake.
The waiter greeted “Happy Birthday to you ma’am” and popped the confetti on her. The other waitress that came with the cake and present bag rushed to place it in her front.
She was too stunned to speak because it was not what she ever expected. She didn’t even remember that it was her birthday and her boss celebrating it for her? She had never thought something like this would happen or a day like this will ever come in her life.
Over the past three years, the only thing he would say to her was a simple “Happy Birthday Miss Amber” and for some reasons, she loved it even at that. She was thankful that someone as cold as him could remember her birthday, she felt important.
Seeing the immense upgrade in their relationship, she was not sure what to feel. If this was just friendship, a boss to secretary relationship, a partner or something even higher than that.
Her hands covered her opened mouth, still in shock as she stared Tom who was satisfied with his perfect surprise.
“This is really unexpected! Thank you so much, Mr. Tom Holland” she screamed and that made him laugh.
He could understand that she was not sure about how to address him because of the immense joy coupled with surprise.
“It’s nothing” he responded and clapped a bit “Happy Birthday, Miss Amber or should I say my partner?” and that only made her go feral, she was blushing like crazy.
She blew off the candles and the cake was served on their plates. She slowly dabbed the corner of her eyes with the folded napkin by her side when she felt the coldness of her stray tears. She was moved by his actions.
She really wasn’t expecting something like this from him and he was also glad that she was genuinely happy. He smudged the cream on her right cheeks unexpectedly and she raised her face to stare at him in shock.
He felt he might have done something wrong, considering the way she had glared at him that way and quickly apologized. “I am sorry, I saw that it was part of how people celebrate birthdays. I am sorry if I annoyed you” he stated and she burst into a big laugh.
His face was funny as he was apologizing over a cream smudge, it was funnier how he was apologizing over something as normal as that.
“It’s nothing to apologize about because it is normal” she chuckled and before he could respond, she smudged his face too making them laugh.
They cleaned up their mess as the food was wheeled in and they silently finished the dinner. He offered to drive her home which she didn’t decline.
“Thank you for the wishes, I really appreciate it” she said to him with her sincerity evident. “I should thank you for always being by me and taking my side” he answered making her blush.
They got to the front of her house and she got down after thanking him once again. She was already heading inside when she turned back and ran to him, “Do you want come in for a bit?” she invited him and he hesitated a bit before agreeing.
He wanted to turn down the offer but he didn’t want to come off as arrogant to her so he just accepted and she led him inside.
“I don’t have anything at home right now because I just came back but I have some homemade juice. Would you like to have a glass?” she asked, unsure about what to offer him and he agreed immediately.
She poured him a glass of peach juice and offered it to him before rushing to put on the TV so the place doesn’t sound boring. The movie she was watching the last time continued playing and it was an erotic scene which made her panic. She quickly fumbled with the remote, trying to change the channel but every channel seemed to have a plan of airing something mature as the channel was showing a pool kiss scene.
“I should check my present” she stuttered and ran to grab the present bag.
She managed to empty the contents on the table without spilling them on the floor and a file dropped down with the box containing a silver necklace. “What is this?” she mumbled as she picked it to open it.
She screamed as she saw the content and didn’t know when she jumped on Tom to thank him. She burst into tears as she clutched the letter to her hand in happiness, it was the notice of increment in her salary as a regular employee.
She finally became a full time employee and her salary has been increased with a very high amount when it was not even the promised time, it was a perfect gift for her. He kept looking at her jump in happiness when she tripped on the sofa behind her making her fall but he was quick to catch her.
He was quick to grab her by the waist and jerked her to himself making them smash against each other. Her heart raced in multiple speed due to both the closeness and the shock of falling. Her boss’ face was just few inches to hers and she could feel his breath, hot.
She blinked severally while trying hard not to look at him and look at him at the same time. She knew very well that if she dares detach herself then her skull would be kissing the floor in the next five seconds so she held unto him for her dear life.
“You said earlier that you had to take my side because I was your boss” he stated and she nodded continuously even though she didn’t understand why he was bringing something that happened few hours earlier back here and in this kind of situation.
He leaned forward, closing the space between their faces and held her closer with the second arm around her waist. He stared at her for some seconds filled with silence, only the ticking of the huge clock on the wall could be heard between them.
“Should we change that answer? I really don’t want to be your boss” he slowly said and her eyes wavered, she lost contact with him because she doesn’t understand what he meant by that.
If they are not boss and secretary then what should they be? “You mean we should become partners?” she managed to respond successfully without stuttering, her heart beating against her rib cage.
“Partners? I don’t think so. I want to be your man Amber” he declared with a thick but low tone as he raised her chin slowly so she could look at him.
It was like a confession! Oh well, it was one! She couldn’t fathom the thought running through her mind because it was wild. Many things were happening to her in just a day. Her boss threw her a surprise birthday meal, gave her the thing she wanted the most as a present and now wants her to his woman, this is more than a jackpot!
Her lips quivered finding the right word as her gaze flickered, she was melting in his arms and she was loving it but the courage to take the first step was not there. He could sense her hesitation and just did her the favor of making the first move as he claimed her lips.
He went in for a hot but gentle kiss and guided her to her feet for stability, they stopped for a second to stare at each other, their breaths rising at each passing second and smash! Their lips met again, this time hungrily.
