Leaving the hotel, Rainie looked at Brucille with crimson-colored eyes and cried angrily, “Are you happy now that you’ve embarrassed me with your dirty tricks? Did you do all that just to show off your wealth?”
“Rainie, listen to me. This wasn’t my intention. I just wanted to express my gratitude, I didn’t mean to hurt you.” Brucille explained.
Rainie said, “Go away. I don’t want to see you ever again. I’m already burdened enough having a crazy gambler as my father, I don’t want to have another rich brother out of nowhere. I just want to graduate peacefully and get a job…”
After Rainie was done talking, she burst into tears, crying sadly as she squatted on the ground, hugging her knees to her chest.
Brucille didn’t know what to do. He gathered his courage and said, “Rainie, why do you have to push me away? Every penny I have was earned through righteous ways, with my own hard work. I just don’t want you to go through the same thing my mother had gone through. Besides, it’s not immoral to have money. Why do you have to make your life so difficult?”
Rainie didn’t care what Brucille had to say. She got up and immediately rushed towards the road.
A white tank truck drove past her in a blink of an eye. Fortunately, Brucille quickly caught up to her and pulled her to him from behind. Otherwise, she might have been a goner.
“Boo hoo…” Rainie cried, frightened.
After a shock like that, Rainie, who was still a student, became even more upset.
Suddenly, Brucille received a call from Jerry. “Brucille, I’ve got the information you wanted regarding Maxwell Wu, shall I send it to your house, or…”
“No need for that. I’m currently in the Ocean Province, I’ll call you when I get back.” Brucille replied.
He hung up the phone, and took some time to stop Rainie from crying.
Brucille said, “Rainie, everything I’ve said is true. My father passed away more than ten years ago. My mother couldn’t cope with the news and ran away from home. For decades, I had been looking for her whereabouts, until recently…”
“I’m grateful to you for taking care of her and helping her out during her last few years of life. I consider you as a long-lost sister. You may not believe me, but I’ve been quite lucky recently. I even found a wife a few days ago.” He continued.
Rainie looked at her inexplicable brother with her cheeks puffed up. She said angrily, “Did you buy a silly wife from abroad with your money?”
Brucille burst out laughing after hearing this.
“Well, Monique is truly a little silly, but don’t tell her that I said that. Look at you, you look a lot better when you don’t have snot coming out of your nose. Let’s go, I’ll treat you to dinner. You didn’t even get to eat anything just now despite spending a few thousands on your friend.” He offered.
Only when the both of them were seated in the restaurant did Rainie get to really know Brucille.
After eating a piece of spicy chicken, she stuck out her tongue and gulped down half a glass of water.
“Oh my god, it’s all chilies in here. Where is the chicken? By the way, you said that you are a live-in son-in-law. Aren’t you very rich? Why would you want to be a live-in son-in-law?” Rainie asked.
To Rainie, a live-in son-in-law was not a very commendatory term.
Brucille’s explanation for it was even more ridiculous. “Oh, you already know that I don’t have parents to take care of. It just so happens that your sister-in-law has two elderlies in her family, so I’m taking it as a filial piety, but staying with them…”
“Stop trying to quibble. You’re already living with them, so you are truly a live-in son-in-law. By the way, tell me honestly, did you give my father money again?” Rainie questioned.
Brucille glanced at the ice-cold face in front of him and patted his chest, saying, “No, but your father said that he didn’t have any money for living expenses, so I gave him 2000 yuan.”
Rainie stared at him in despair and said, “I’m begging you, please don’t give him any more money. He might be able to live a few more years if he doesn’t have money. He borrowed from loan sharks before and was almost killed by them.”
Brucille still remembered that as if it happened just yesterday.
“Alright then, take this card. You and I are family now. I will pay for all your living expenses until you graduate, no wait, until you get married.” Brucille handed her a card.
Rainie took the card from him and looked at it. “You’re so stingy. Why give me a credit card when I can’t afford to pay for it after using it?”
“Don’t worry, you use the credit card, I’ll pay for it. I have to go back to Spring River City tonight, I have something urgent to deal with. Call me if you need anything.” Brucille said.
Rainie had already witnessed several times how ‘generous’ her brother could be. If she didn’t accept the card, who knew what else he would do out of impulse. Thinking about the dress she was wearing that cost 20, 000 yuan, she felt exhausted.
After dinner, Brucille escorted her back to her dorm.
Then, he travelled back to the Spring River City overnight. It was already three o’clock in the morning when he reached home, and he was extremely fatigued after the long journey.
He parked the car outside the yard. Right when he was about to open the door, he saw a man in black coming out of his yard.
Brucille shouted, “What are you doing?”
The man in black didn’t expect to land so close to Brucille. With a bag in his arms, he sprinted away as soon as he heard Brucille’s shouts.
He ran as fast as Usain Bolt, but in a housing area like this, it was definitely not a 100-meter straight race track. The curved paths with bushes and trees posed a great challenge to the thief.
Brucille came from behind and landed him a flying kick on his back.
“Bold of you to steal from my house. Come, let’s see what you’ve stolen from me. If you dare steal anything valuable, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.” Brucille said.
The thief didn’t expect the man to be so energetic at three o’clock in the morning.
He asked in confusion, “Did you just return from the sauna center?”
“Sauna? Tell me, what did you steal?” Brucille asked, ignoring his nonsense.
Lying on the ground, the thief cried, “Boss, I didn’t steal these things from your house. I stole these from another house, you can’t take them.”
Brucille warned, “Boy, you should know that you’re committing a crime called burglary. If the things that you have stolen are worth more than 30, 000 yuan, it will be enough to sentence you to a few years in prison. If you happen to have stolen an antique, congratulations, you’ll be stuck in there for the rest of your life.”
He said this without loosening his grip. Just as he was about to take the thief’s black bag, something sharp pressed against his waist.
“We gave you a chance, but you didn’t want it. Since you knew it was burglary, you should’ve known that he wouldn’t be doing it alone. If you know what’s good for you, leave immediately, and we’ll pretend that we’ve never met before.” A voice sounded from behind.
Brucille could tell that it was a sharp dagger. He raised his arms and said softly, “Hey, take it easy. The weather is hot, and my skin is thin, I wouldn’t be able to take it!”
