Chapter 21

My tongue was too heavy to form the pleadings for compassion that teased at the back of my mind, but I managed to squeak out one last moan of protest as it passed past my lips.
“Don’t worry; everything will work out.” As I descended farther into the abyss, his promise drifted down to me. I was saved from falling thanks to corded arms that wrapped around me and caught me.
The tone of his voice was soothing and somehow reassuring, “You’ll be with Nicola again soon.” “We’ll keep you secure.”
Safe. With that peculiar sense of security, I gave in to the darkness, and as a result, the world vanished before my eyes.
Nicola
Mathew gave me a wicked grin and added, “I bought you a gift,” but I didn’t put a second of my faith in what he was saying.
I gave a dismissive shrug since I was dissatisfied and disinterested. These days, I’m not interested in anything at all. Not ever since I couldn’t find her. I’d attempted to go away and lead a regular life, and it was during that search that I came upon Emily: my pure and beautiful angel.
On the other hand, Matthew had found me and was the one who pulled me back into my own particular hell. I didn’t want to live a life filled with brutality and bloodshed. My only goal was to escape from it all once and for all. When I first became acquainted with Emily, I believed that this was a possibility for me. After the dream fell apart, I felt empty within and numb to the world around me.
Therefore, it didn’t really matter to me whether Mathew had given me a golden unicorn or not. I didn’t give a fuck. Nothing could shake me up at this point.
“Is that the reason you insisted that I come here?” I wanted to know, perplexed as to why he’d asked me to the mansion that his family owned on Long Island. I had been with my father in the city, where he was attempting to defend his claim as the head of our family after the current don. I was trying to defend his claim as the leader of our family. And it was only a matter of time until Victor succumbed to natural causes.
To the detriment of my blood relations, there were other prominent guys inside our mafia family who want to assume control of the organization. Mathew had pulled me home for this very reason: to shield my father and his presumed standing in the community. I guess it was a minor mercy for them that I’d finally been discovered after months of hiding out around the Stanford campus. They’d all been scared that I’d passed away, so that’s why I figured it was a small mercy for them.
Aside from that, I may not have enjoyed my life, but I did not despise my father. I didn’t want to be there when he passed away.
In addition, I didn’t want to put Matthew in any kind of danger. If I hadn’t intervened, the guy who had served as my surrogate brother for my whole life may have been murdered. He depended on me to look out for him, but I’d left him in the lurch. I was aware that it had to have been painful for him, and I felt remorse over the fact that I had chosen to abandon him.
Then what the hell was he thinking by getting me a present?
His cunning grin remained rooted in place on his stony visage. “I told you, I bought you a gift. I had no choice but to hide it here. Come on in and have a look. ”
I let out a groan of exasperation as I crossed the threshold and entered the opulent home, but I persisted in doing so.
A guy may easily become blind from the amount of white marble and gold gilding that was used in the decoration. Although the impression was overpowering, Mathew’s father, Lucas Lee, had never been a subtle guy, and this had always been his home.
Even though it’s been a while since he’s been around here. Because he was so busy protecting my father’s position from inside the city, he was unable to come to our aid. Lucas is Dad’s closest buddy, and he would give his life to keep Dad safe. Exactly the same as what Matthew would do for me.
After Mathew started strolling in the direction of the opulent curving double staircase, I did the same thing. I felt a rumbling of curiosity someplace deep inside me, but it was very faint. Nothing that has happened recently has piqued my curiosity very much. Not ever since I’d given up hope of leading a regular life with Emily after we’d broken up.
I came to a halt as we reached the top of the stairs and began to go in the direction of Mathew’s bedroom. My one and only known feeling, anger, began to rise to the surface.
It was with clenched teeth that I issued the warning, “Do not tell me you have a female in there.” If Mathew’s idea of a gift was a woman, then he really blew it big time with that one. Emily was the only person in the world who caught my attention. My gut churned whenever I entertained the thought of caressing another lady.
As he twisted the handle and pulled the door open, the grin on his face became wider. “In point of fact, it is what I do.”
My anger was about to boil over when I got a blow to the chest that wiped out all of my breath. The horrifyingly alluring image that was in front of me caused me to take a few steps backward.
She was much more beautiful than I had recalled; her ivory complexion almost glistened like that of some otherworldly creature, and her black, silky hair cascaded over the pillows in the bedroom. Her beautiful eyes were closed, and her long lashes fell down to rest on her cheeks.
