Beach Talk

“Do you think he’s going to have a hard time from the other parents?” Hazel asked while she dug her feet into the sand.
They were sitting next to each other on the beach blanket Marlon brought from his car. He was high, she was a second hand smoker.
“I doubt the parents had any access to those videos, unless the kids talk … if they were at the party, chances are they won’t say a thing … and those who weren’t there wouldn’t care,” Marlon said.
“Hmm … I guess it was good measures for Edgerton to suspend you at the earliest stage … he won’t get too much shit from the parents if or when it blows over.”
“Let’s hope your mom would never find out … that’s what I’m worried about,” he said.
“Not unless it’s blown up on the 7 o’clock news,” she giggled, “I don’t think those videos will ever make it to her timeline either … she’s not on social media very often.”
“I’m sorry …” Marlon said.
She turned to him, “What for?”
“I shouldn’t have invited you … it was a mistake.”
Her jaw dropped but with a smile, “Is that suppose to be an apology?”
“You know what I mean … you wouldn’t be in trouble if I hadn’t insist you on coming … Dennis is a dick, I should’ve warned you about him.”
“Whatever happened to him after the party? So you guys had a fallen out because of me?”
Marlon scoffed, “I guess you can say that … a fallen out, shunned, black listed from the friendzone … dumped … they’ll come looking for me in no time … it’s always been like that.”
“Dumped? How do you mean?”
“Mandy dumped me … well … technically, we’re not together …” he sighed deeply, “It’s complicated … but yeah, she dumped me after the incident, she thought I went too far … I broke his nose and accused him of things she said he wouldn’t have done,” he raised his shoulders.
“Oh, I’m so sorry … I didn’t realize it was that bad,” she touched his arm and swayed softly, “You must be sad … how long were you together?”
He curved his lips, “Yeah … well … maybe she’s better off without me … I really am not a good boyfriend … I didn’t even knew I was her boyfriend until she pointed it out.”
“Oh my God … that’s terrible …” she laughed, “I don’t mean to laugh but …” she couldn’t stop laughing, “I’m sorry …” she kept laughing.
He knew she was under the influence, but the situation was pretty ridiculous and funny. He laughed lightly, “Thanks for the encouragement … I’m glad you find my tragic love life funny.”
She fell back on the blanket and kept laughing, “I’m sorry … I can’t stop laughing …” her face was red, tears started coming out of her eyes, and she held her stomach because it was cramping from laughing so hard.
He glanced at her and smiled. He wasn’t the least bit offended by her over the top laughing. He thought it was cute how high she was and laughing uncontrollably because of the things that was going on inside her head was a lot funnier than he could ever comprehend.
“Do you want to hang out at my house? Everyday … after school?” Marlon said after a while.
“Sure … I don’t really have anything now that Lee’s not here,” she pouted.
“We can binge watch on Netflix … or have a barbeque … ask Jan to come or whatever … ”
“Yeah, I’ll ask her … or you can hang out at my place for dinner some time … do you know how long your parents are going to be away?” Hazel rolled to her stomach.
He shrugged, “My mom is signed up for 6 months, my dad is always working … I don’t think he’s coming home unless the house is on fire.”
She thought about it, “He can’t leave you on your own for too long? Can he?”
“I’ll be 18 in September … I won’t be a minor for long … then I’ll be home free,” he had a wide smile on his face.
