Chapter Sixty-Nine – In secret.
Damien pulled his tie lose and spun around on his chair. That was a tough one. Thankfully, the governor wasn’t oppressed by the attack and still wanted the project to go on.
His only problem were the governor’s allies that were skeptical about it as they feared the Wades’ enemies will target them as well.
All they needed was inspiration speech, mixed with some belittling of them for giving into their fears of terrorists and they quickly agreed to work with him again.
“My bad habits are returning.” Damien sighed. “But at least, this time, it ended well, really well.” He smiled in relief.
There was a knock on the door. He paused. “Come in.”
His mother walked in. Damien sprang to his feet. “Mom?”
She exhaled, and smiled. “How are doing? This was a second attack from those people, wasn’t it?”
His eyes darkened and he looked down. The last thing he wanted was his mom finding out who was attacking and worrying about it.
If she also knew more details and discover her new daughter-in-law was the target, it’d really piss her off.
“Selena figured some things out. These attackers were after Arya after all so it narrowed down who they were.” Mrs. Wade sat down besides her son.
Damien plopped down back on his chair. She must have figured everything all out then, there was no need to hide it from her or she could misunderstand his intentions.
“I’m being careful not to make it open on who the attackers are. Debby Chan was once my associate.” He explained.
His mother nodded. “You’re right. Also, her father’s company is one of our subsidiaries’ shareholders. We can’t let it become open, hence…”
She cocked her head, looking into her son’s eyes. “Hence you have to deal with it quietly. Her father doesn’t know of her actions so it’s possible she’d want to keep it secret too.”
A thought came to Damien’s head. “That’s right! All the while, she had been careful not to slip up, she must be doing this against her father’s knowledge.”
Since that was the case, the easiest way of ending it all was to make it open what mafia group was attacking the Wades.
Debby’s father would become alert and make sure his daughter wasn’t affiliated with them.
That will certainly cut her wings as without her uncle’s illegal group, she can’t do anything. However, that has lots of risk.
The press would surely like to know why a teenage genius, that was once affiliated to the Wades group, suddenly became hostile towards the entity.
The real reason would sound unreasonable and would out that the CEO was married. Arya didn’t want it to be open and if it becomes open this way, it will cause lots of hate to Arya.
The Wade group would also be taken as a joke for making a child harbor feelings for their CEO that turned out to be a full blown out war. It would leave a stain on their reputation.
“Mom, I don’t want you worrying about Arya or what’s happening. She’d skip school for a while. And I’d put keep check on her family members. Nothing will go wrong.”
Mrs. Wade smiled. “I expect nothing less. My heart never really accepted that Debby. I hope everything passes away as quietly as possible.” She left the seat. “I’d head home then.”
“I’d send some bodyguards with you.” Damien offered as she left. He quickly whipped his phone out and called available bodyguards to guide his mother.
After he was done, he attempted calling Arya but the door to his office was abruptly opened. He grinned on seeing Ken.
“You met with Arya, didn’t you?” he asked.
Ken lowered his eyebrows. “Is that what you should ask me? You left me at the mercy of the press?”
“As my secretary is only befitting you answer them. You’d know what to say. Also, your sassy lines make it to television every time.” Damien replied, shuffling the files on his desk.
“You will be heading home?” Ken asked, seating besides him.
Damien slowed down. “Not quite. I’d visit someone first. I have to respond to these attackers quickly or someone could get hurt. You can stay around too…”
“Deborah Chan is not crazy enough to come after me! Don’t worry. My superiority was imprinted on her, massively.” Ken said in a nonchalant manner.
Damien had to agree. Even if he noticed how Debby never wanted him being with other girls or men generally, he didn’t think it was because she liked him.
It was his inexperience with women that was costing him this silly downplay. Debby possessive attitude would have been put in check earlier if he had noticed.
The only person who she behaved around was Ken. Maybe because Ken and she were alike.
Ken also didn’t want him making unnecessary friends and had deemed Debby as an unworthy parasite to tag along him.
At that point, Debby was just the daughter of a shareholder and nothing else. Ken’s belittling must have gotten to her.
Soon, she became versed in knowledge of engineering and rose to ingenuity. Her father bragged about her and with her results, Ken complimented her efforts.
They didn’t get along but Debby grew respect for Ken. Even if he’s the closest non-relative to the Wades attacking him would be relatively easy and would cause a huge buzz.
“Don’t be so sure she wouldn’t attack you. But I doubt she will, she’s being discrete, attacking the secretary to the Wades group would be big.” Damien walked to the exit.
Ken picked up a file that fell and flung it at Damien. “That aside, I don’t think your wife knows she met you in the past.”
The file hitting Damien made him frown but Ken’s words made him frown deeper. “Ken, did you really bring that up?”
His friend swirled around in his chair. “Should I have? I couldn’t bring myself to do that. It was embarrassing for me too.” He stopped swirling. “But she hasn’t forgotten.”
Damien’s hands clenched. “Please stop making me second guess myself. I already have a lot on my plate.”
Ken raised his hands in defense. “Sure, sure. Just go back to your wife before she becomes worried. Don’t forget to break Debby before next month, that’s the company’s anniversary.”
Damien smiled. “Yeah, nothing stupid should happen during that anniversary. I’d be off then.”
