Chapter Thirty-Seven – Threat.
The building looked less creepy with the presence of the police men. Damien wore a bulletproof vest and held unto a torch before walking towards the policemen.
“Sir Damien, will you please stay behind? We will handle it from here.” A policeman pleaded with him.
Damien frowned, shaking his head. “This is my sister in-law we are talking about. I’d like to stay close.” He moved ahead.
The policeman was stunned. He was a fan of the CEO and tracked all news related to him as he was his business mentor. But he had never heard about him getting a wife.
“Sister-in-law?” he asked out loud but Damien didn’t hear. The man cleared his throat before walking close to him.
“Well, I hope you cooperate with us to ensure your safety. We are going in now.” He said to Damien.
Damien nodded, stepping back for him to lead. The policeman smiled before gesturing to his team to proceed.
The building was quiet and didn’t show presence on any living being. It bothered Damien but he was affirmative he’d leave with some kind of clue.
“That room is empty.” An officer reported to the policeman.
Another shouted back from a distance. “All these rooms are empty, Sir.”
The policeman nodded. “Check if there’s something in them.”
“There’s a portacabin here, Sir!” A junior officer called.
Damien and the rest ran to where his voice came from. There was a reek of blood coming from the cabin. Damien’s heart began beating faster.
The portacabin was kicked open and all hands went to their nose. There was a decaying body in there. And flies had surrounded it.
Damien’s heart settled. It wouldn’t be Anna. She was kidnapped recently while that body looked like it had stayed for days. “Please, check who that is.”
The policeman nodded and advanced towards the body.
After searching around the portacabin, Damien’s eyes fell on a small item, a hair pin. He recognized it as Anna’s. It was one she inherited from her mother.
“This, sirs, belongs to the lady I’m looking for. She was here.” Damien said, pointing at the hair pin.
Someone rushed to pick it and kept in a bag as evidence.
“The man there was killed about two or three days ago. It looks gruesome. Can you recognize him?” the policeman asked Damien.
Damien inched closer to the man and nearly jumped back. Wasn’t that the man that was tailing Debby back at the summit? He was mutilated here?
“This man tried kidnapping a guest of mine. She’s safe now but… I don’t know.” He tried to remove the part where he met the gang leader and offered money to leave Debby alone.
Was it the gang that killed him? Maybe because he failed his mission? Then was it related with Anna? Did they go after Anna because they couldn’t get Debby?
But it made no sense.
“Ahh, so he’s a criminal? If that’s so then his gang would look for him soon. I doubt his gang members did this to him. It could be a rival gang.” The policeman noted.
Damien nodded in agreement, it must have been the case. But how did it all relate to Anna?
“Okay, Sir Damien, we have confirmed your reports. We will continue the investigation from here on and report to you all findings. Is that okay?” an officer asked.
He nodded, stepping back. “Sure and thank you!”
His mind still thought about the possible scenarios that would have made Anna be the best victim after Debby.
Was this person just trying to put him in anguish by hurting people close to him? Or was it not similar in anyway?
But surely keeping the man who tailed Debby in the same room where Anna’s hair pin was, was surely a clue.
Or was it a threat? Saying what happened to the man would happen to Anna? But why’d whoever have a problem with the man and Anna at the same time. They are not related.
A huge sigh left Damien’s lips as he got into his car. He wasn’t sure what his findings were. What will he tell Arya?
He started his car with a grunt and took out his phone to call her. Speaking about this through phone would be better for him, he had to drop by that gang spot again.
“Hey, Arya.” He smiled when he heard her voice.
“Oh, hey! Were you successful?” she asked.
“Well, kinda.” He replied. “Are you at your shop? Would you like me to pick you up later? I’m heading somewhere now.”
Arya glanced at the place she was, outside the government building for the last twenty minutes having trouble flying down a taxi.
“Um… I’d head home myself, no worries.” she chuckled nervously. A power bike rode past her making a loud sound.
Damien’s eyebrows rose. “Is your shop on the road? That’s risky. Will you stay there till I come pick you?”
Arya’s fist clenched, wanting to hit the power bike driver. She faked a smile even if she knew Damien couldn’t see her. “Okay then, go where you going. I’d wait at my shop.”
A smile came to Damien’s lips and he made an ‘hmm’ sound before hanging up. His car swerved towards the gang spot and his lips straightened.
When he finally stopped at the entrance, he honked thrice to get someone’s attention. There was no reply.
He got down from the car, and took out a gun from his bag.
“If this gang has something to do with Anna’s disappearance then they’d be meeting God today.” He muttered, putting bullets into the gun.
He crashed unto the door. His hands immediately went to his nose and his eyes widened. They were dead bodies! The gang, most of them, had been killed!
He backed away immediately and tried phoning the police but he stopped. There was a movement by one of the gang members. Someone was alive.
“Hey, are you alright?” he rushed into the building again.
The man struggled to pull a body from his and rolled out of the pile. “I have been hiding here for days. We were attacked.”
Damien rolled his eyes. It was obvious they were. “Do you know who they were?”
“They spoke a different language and weren’t a rival group. They took Macho, the man that you came to report to us to that day.”
Damien nodded. The man that tailed Debby. They may have killed him in the building as evidence. It was really a threat.
“They took my sister in law too. That’s why I came here.” Damien explained, helping the man up.
The man adjusted his specs and stretched. “Our boss thought it was you who sent the men at first. But he realized that they were overseas assassins later. Probably from Asia.”
Damien’s ears pricked. Assassins from Asia?
He took out his phone. “I don’t deal with much Asians, to think of assassins but…” he placed the phone close to the man. “Did they sound like this?”
The man inched closer to listen, his eyes slowly enlarged. “Yes, yes. What language is this? The men screamed to themselves in this language.”
Damien exhaled deeply then retrieved his phone. “This is Chinese.” He remarked.
Why would Chinese assassins kill Macho and take Anna? Well, it would surely be related to Debby.
