“Well no.” Kelvin sighed out with a roll of his eyes when Jason didn’t say anything. “It’s not because she didn’t want me or that she wasn’t ready. If she wasn’t she wouldn’t have been with you.”
“Maybe you were just being the annoying bastard you are and she didn’t like the idea of you.” Jason pointed out as he raised his brows to Kelvin who furrowed his brows in annoyance, almost not wanting to continue his point, but he had to, he needed Jason to feel either irritated or a bit of shame in his eyes. He wanted to see it.
“Anyway.” Kelvin rolled his eyes again and glanced towards the field. “As I said, not that she would tell you, Emily had a really rough childhood. Hearing it yourself would make you think you’re being just another poison in her life.” He explained, getting Jason to slightly frown when he noticed how gloomy Kelvin’s face suddenly got, almost as though he was looking at a scene where his parents lay dead in front of him, or someone he loved so deadly was dead in front of him. This shocked Jason a bit, knowing it wasn’t just something Kelvin was making up, it was serious.
“What did she go through?” Jason asked as he noticed Kelvin’s silence. “What was her past like?”
“Did Emily ever seem off, when she first got here?” Kelvin asked as he glanced at Jason with raised brows. “Did she seem like a weird kid?”
“First time I met her she couldn’t stand being around me and always tried to avoid me at all costs. She’d hide or try to cry when I held her hand to stop her fro running. I just thought her parents dying must have been a murder she witnessed.” Jason shrugged his shoulders as Kelvin nodded and glanced back at the field..
“Apparently Emily’s parents are still alive, even today. But believe me, she’s much better here than with them. The things they did to her. I wouldn’t have been able to go through it.” He sighed out, running a hand through his short thick hair. “Honestly I felt angry that she chose you over me but when she explained why, I fully understood why she suddenly panicked that day. She just suddenly got afraid of me and tried to get away. I saw it in her eyes that she was lying to say she wasn’t ready, but I could see she was terrified. I wanted to show her she shouldn’t be afraid if they told her that it’s painful at first and all that but she persisted and that’s when you came to stop me.”
“What does that have to do with what she went through?” Jason asked, still not getting how it was connected to the mating ceremony.
“Emily’s story is long, I’d like to explain it but I wouldn’t want you going back to her and apologizing or reminding her like me and Melanie forced her to do.” Kelvin shook his head in denial. “What I can tell you is that, she was almost taken advantage of at the age of four by a man much older than her. Combined with the way her parents beat her up every passing day for … Well for being a normal child and for even being alive and apparently ‘ruining their once perfect lives’, Emily had developed a stranger-phobia kind of problem. She felt unsafe around generally everyone. She felt threatened by everyone around her. She ran away from the man but her mother left her an an orphanage to marry the same man.”
“The same man being her father?” Jason asked and Kelvin shook his head once more.
“This man wasn’t her father. He actual father was with other women somewhere else and didn’t come back for like a week I think.” He explained as Jason nodded in understanding. “So when Emily was left at the orphanage, remember, this is a four year old probably turning five. So this four year old meets bullies there and she decides to run away, having enough of it and that’s when the alpha finds her and takes her in. So me being a stranger and somewhat resembling the man in her past, trying to force her must have scared her a lot.” He explained and Jason nodded, glancing towards the field as he tried to settle everything he had just heard into his mind.
Emily and her parents had lied to him about her history and kept it so short that he didn’t even have much to ask of it. They constructed it so simple and plain. ‘Emily was an orphan when I found her’ the alpha had told him when Emily came into the pack. ‘Her parents had a car accident and I found her walking around aimlessly, she was lucky to survive.’ His wife had added and he believe them for so long.
Not knowing they were hiding a much darker secret than he would even guess.
“So that’s why she fell in love with me.” Jason spoke out, catching Kelvin’s attention. “The reason she does is because I’m the only man she trusts?”
“Exactly.” Kelvin nodded as he clasped his hands together and chuckled. “Took a lot to get into that thick-headed skill of yours.”
“Makes sense….” Jason trailed off as he reached his fingers to his chin and stroked it slightly. “She would always end up running from a mating ceremony or failing to get through with it and I always wondered why she was always reacting the same over and over again, wondering if she was even going to find anyone back then, but now that you explained the entire story to me, it makes a lot of sense. She’s probably just afraid of new people, since she can’t tell how they will act or how they’ll behave.” He nodded to his own words as Kelvin frowned.
This clearly wasn’t the reaction he was expecting from Jason.
Where was the regret in all this?
Shouldn’t Jason be feeling some sort of regret?
And yet here he was suddenly becoming philosophical about it.
