Chapter 1107 Checking Up

Book:That Stranger Lying Beside Me Published:2024-6-1

Abbie and Michael went to the lake together in the evening. They sat on the private boat and enjoyed the spectacular night view along the way.
Michael had instructed someone to prepare several sky lanterns that were of different shapes and colors. Abbie was feeling excited about it and began lighting up the lanterns one after another.
The sky lanterns rose slowly and soon floated in the air. It was a mesmerizing scene to be appreciated.
Abbie took out her mobile phone to snap a photo before uploading it to her social media’s homepage. Valeria was the first to comment on it, “Wow, are you out to have fun? Is this a surprise from that guy? Not bad!”
Abbie grinned and replied, “Your beloved one is much better than mine!”
Michael chimed in and asked Abbie, “Are you posting this on your social media platform?”
“Go away!” Abbie pushed him aside to not let him have a look at her homepage.
Michael then took out his mobile phone in hopes to see what she had published in her digital world. However, things did not go his way as he realized that Abbie had blocked him off on all social media platforms.
Michael asked with a depressed look on his face, “Abbie, why did you block me?”
“I just feel like it.”
“I would like to be unblocked from your blacklist. Can I have a look at your homepage?” Michael wrapped his arms around her waist.
“Dream on!”
“I’ll do it myself then! I have nothing to hide from you. Why would you be so secretive towards me? It’s absurd for you to block me off from viewing your homepage!” Michael attempted to grab her phone away as soon as he finished speaking.
Abbie giggled and pushed him away. “You don’t even post regularly on your social media. What difference would it make for allowing me to view it? Feel free to blacklist me if you think it is unfair. I have no objections to it.”
“I don’t have the heart to block you off. Hand me your phone to get me out of the blacklist before I get mad at you!”
“Really? Why don’t you have a try at me then? I’m not intimidated by you at all!”
“Are you provoking me now? I’ll bite if you’re still being stubborn!”
“What? Alright then. Challenge accepted!” The two of them chucked and continued to joke around with each other.
Azalea was dead-tired after accompanying Helen to shop around for the entire day. She felt refreshed after taking a bath upon reaching home.
She then laid on the bed and applied a sheet mask while contacting Meadow to update her about the things that happened today. “Angel is a peculiar person. I assumed that she had something important to do when she instructed me to hang out with Mrs. Clark. I was taken aback when she proposed the idea of a shopping spree. She even gifted a brooch to Helen that is worth millions.”
“Was she that generous?” Meadow was surprised and queried further, “Did Helen accept the present then?”
“She refused at first but Angel was very persistent in giving her the present. She had no choice but eventually received the gift as Angel said that it was a gesture for assisting in present-picking. Helen then bought a bracelet that was much more expensive than the brooch and gave it to Angel.”
“That’s weird. Angel does not look like a simple and innocent person. Why is she being so selfless? Something fishy must be going on when one behaves out of the blue. Angel must be wanting to achieve her motives by being friendly with Helen.”
“You’re right, I share the same thought with you as well. I’ve observed Angel carefully just now and realized that she has somehow changed into a whole new person. She was being gentle, well-mannered, and polite during the entire day. Mrs. Clark even complimented her for being courteous after Angel had bid goodbye to us. I was utterly dumbfounded upon hearing about it.”
Did Angel pretend to be kind and well-behaved? She even bought a gift to please Helen. Why would Angel do this when she was not one who went bonkers?
Meadow struggled to come up with something to rationalize Angel’s actions, “I can’t wrap my head around to explain her purpose for being friendly with Helen. You should continue to pay attention to Angel. We can discuss much more when you give me a heads up about her extensive bizarre actions.”
Azalea agreed and soon ended the phone call. She scrolled through her social media out of boredom and soon noticed Abbie’s post of the sky lanterns.
Azalea stared at the sky lantern’s picture while feeling jealous and bitter. It was impossible for Abbie to light sky lanterns on her own at night. She must be spending time with Michael right now.
Michael and Abbie might snuggle and flirt with each other. Azalea felt utterly displeased at the thought of it.
Abbie had no extraordinary qualities in her apart from having an influential and wealthy family. She was an ill-tempered person and would often get mad at Michael. She would always cause unnecessary troubles for him. On the other hand, Azalea felt that she was a gentle and compassionate person. She would always listen and show respect to Michael’s opinions.
Azalea perceived herself to be much better than Abbie. Why was Michael unable to be attracted to Azalea’s qualities?
Azalea realized that she could not sit back and watch Michael and Abbie attempt to rekindle their relationship with each other. She frustratedly opened up the text panel of Mrs. Clark on her phone and typed, “Helen, is Abbie currently at home?”
“Nope. Why do you ask?” Helen reverted the text message.
“Mrs. Clark, Abbie must be seeing someone right now, isn’t she?”
“Really? I don’t think so.”
Azalea’s lips twitched and she swiftly replied, “I saw a man locking hands with a lady that looked exactly like Abbie. The two of them were being very close to each other. Could I have got things mixed up then?”
Helen was feeling slightly panicked upon receiving such a text message from her. “Are you sure about that?”
“Nope, that is why I have decided to ask you about it. The person who looks like Abbie is carrying a limited-edition purse and dresses the same way as her. She is being very intimate with the man who is currently hugging her…”
Helen had a displeased look on her face upon reading the text message. She then immediately video called Abbie.
Michael and Abbie were currently on the lake. She was not daring enough to answer Helen’s video call.
The private boat only consisted of Abbie, Michael, and the maneuver. Helen might demand Abbie to show her the current whereabouts. Michael would have no other places to hide given the confined space.
Helen video called Abbie several times but to no avail. She sent a message while feeling upset, “Where are you? Why are you not picking up my phone calls?”
Abbie read the message but did not revert back. She glanced at Michael and said, “My mother is trying to check up on me! What should I do now? Let’s head back as soon as possible!”
“Calm down. You can say that you did not hear the phone ringing just now, can’t you?”
“What are you talking about? My mother will get ahold of Richard immediately if I do not text her back. He is a busybody and will then instruct his men to look for me everywhere. I definitely can’t cover up the lie and it is best for us to head back.”
Michael had no choice but to stop the boat riding session with Abbie. They soon returned to the shore by the lake.
Abbie quickly made her way to the dessert shop by the lakeside after getting off the boat. She then texted Helen, “Why did you call me just now?”
“Where are you?”
“Of course I am out having fun. What’s wrong?”
Helen immediately turned on the video call setting and connected with Abbie. She had a suspicious look on her face upon seeing Abbie at the dessert shop and asked, “Are you savoring the desserts alone at this hour?”
“Why would you be so nosy when I just want to enjoy my sweet treats?” Abbie questioned.
“I have no objections to you having desserts as I am just a little bit worried about you. Are you genuinely by yourself right now?”
“Of course. Mom, what are your intentions? Are you trying to check up on me?” Abbie turned her phone around to showcase her surroundings with an annoyed look on her face. “You are finally convinced that I am currently alone, aren’t you?”
Helen breathed a sigh of relief as she did not notice anything out of the blue. “I am not intentionally checking up on you. Azalea just told me that she saw a lady that looked exactly like you who was being hugged by a man. Hence, I would like you to answer me honestly. Abbie, you are not in a relationship, are you?”
Abbie was enraged upon hearing about it. Damn Azalea, she was indeed a pain in the ass.
Abbie suppressed the anger within her and said, “Of course not. No man would be attracted to me based on my bad temper!”
Helen replied in a gentle tone, “I’m not objecting you to be in a relationship. However, you need to tell me, papa, and Richard if you are attracted to someone else. We can provide our opinions about the man that you are interested in.”
“Alright. Is there anything else that you would like to talk about?” Abbie tried to be patient and asked.
“Nope. Do come back early and don’t linger out for too long.”
Abbie got up and exited the dessert shop after ending the video call with Helen. Michael was waiting for her outside the store and asked, “I assume you are done with your stuff?”
“What? This is all because of Azalea, that bitch. She has been spewing nonsense to my mom by claiming that I am currently spending time with a man. My mom is now suspicious of my love life and I have to head back home right now. Let’s call it a day.”
