William picked up his phone and dialed Fandrey’s number. Fandrey’s voice was filled with joy when the call was being connected, “William, you’ve settled all the problems, right?”
“I guess so!” William replied.
“What? Is there still some left?” Fandrey asked.
“Yes. The traitor in your family that I got to know from Sammuel is still on my mind. Grandpa, have you got ahold of the spy?”
Fandrey sighed and said, “No, I have investigated all the servants but none of them fits the bill.”
“Really? Could it be that the traitor might not be your servants?” William was testing the water.
“What? Who could it be then? Could it be your uncle or your aunt? Or Angel? Which one of them is your suspect?” Fandrey asked.
“I have no idea. Grandpa, I would like to ask you about something. Who else knew about Declan being alive apart from you?”
“Your uncle, as he was in my study room at that time and I told him about it.” Fandrey immediately came to his senses and said, “William, are you suspecting that your uncle is the mole? How is that possible? It’s definitely not him! Who else can I trust if your uncle happens to be the one?”
“No, I’m not pointing fingers at uncle. What I meant is, could it be possible that he told someone else about it?” William tried to ease the tension.
“It does seem possible.” Fandrey muttered to himself for a moment and continued, “Let me ask your uncle about it and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.”
Fandrey had a sullen expression on his face as he ended the call with William. He paced around the study room for a while before summoning Callum in.
Callum had just come back from work and was having tea after he finished bathing. Fandrey waved at him and said, “Come here, I have something to ask you.”
He swiftly placed his teacup down and followed Fandrey into the study room upon seeing the stern expression on his face.
Fandrey signaled Callum to have a seat after closing the door of the study room. Fandrey cut to the chase and asked, “Who else did you share about the news that Declan was still alive?”
Callum was surprised and asked, “Dad, what happened?”
“Do not ask questions and just come clean to me!” Fandrey’s tone was increasingly rigid.
“I told my wife about it as she was worried about William and had been waiting for the updates. Is anything wrong?”
“Are you sure that you only told your wife about it and not others?” Fandrey asked in surprise.
“Of course, I only told her and no one else.”
“How… how is this possible? How could it be her?” Fandrey was taken aback by it.
“Dad, what’s going on? Can you just spill the beans instead of beating around the bush?” Callum looked at Fandrey with a confused look on his face.
“Your wife… Is your wife the mole of the Floyd Family? Is she turning her back against us? This is surprising! What an unexpected turn of the table!”
“What? But…” Fandrey interrupted Callum by waving at him.
Fandrey signaled him to open the door and he was surprised by Fandrey’s sudden reaction. He then got up swiftly and walked towards the door to open it. Veronica had brought over something to drink and smiled at Callum, “Honey, I have brought some tea over for both you and dad.”
“Alright, I’ll take it from here!” Callum took the tea and said, “Dad and I still have some matters to discuss over. You can call it a day and don’t wait up for me as it’s getting late.”
“Okay!” Veronica agreed and left.
Callum placed the tea on the table after watching Veronica leave. He had a gloomy look on his face and said, “Is she trying to eavesdrop on us by pretending to offer us some tea? What’s going on?”
Fandrey was also bothered by it and said, “I would have continued to suspect the servants if it weren’t from William. I didn’t expect it to be her!”
Veronica was the daughter-in-law that was personally chosen by Fandrey for Callum. She was a gentle and kind-hearted woman and contributed greatly to the family without getting into trouble. She had also never expressed her displeasure when Callum had brought back his daughter that was born out of wedlock.
She had a big heart for accepting Angel into the family and Fandrey had always felt guilty towards her. She was the perfect daughter-in-law that anyone could wish for. However, Fandrey had a change of opinion ever since he found out that Veronica was the traitor in his family.
Fandrey gritted his teeth and said, “She is the mole all along and had turned her back against us. To what extent did she get her hands dirty to mess the Floyd Family up then?”
“I have no idea as we have never suspected her at all!” Callum was shocked and could not accept that Veronica had betrayed him. “Dad, could there be a misunderstanding? Why would she do it?”
“Why? Have you got no idea at all?” Fandrey grinned coldly and said, “I reckon it was the incident that happened last time when you were so stubborn to marry your mistress. How could she not hold a grudge against you after being greatly humiliated by this?”
“But… she could have called the marriage off if that was how she felt, right? I did not force her…” Callum was surprised by this speculation.
“What do you know? Love hard, hate harder! The grass is always greener on the other side. It would be an embarrassment as the youngest daughter of the Laban family if the marriage were to be called off. It was better for her to go with the flow to save herself from shame!” Fandrey sneered and replied.
“It’s no wonder that Veronica was not bothered by Angel at all. I have always thought that she had a big heart but have no idea that she was holding a grudge against me all along.”
“Is she keeping her enemy close all these while? But, dad, I have always come clean to her. She would have got rid of the entire Floyd Family if she was indeed the mole. Nothing bad had ever happened to us, right?”
“You’re wrong. She might have done something behind our backs, but we had no idea about it!”
Fandrey knew that it was a hard pill to swallow for the both of them. However, they needed a concrete piece of evidence to ensure that their speculation is correct.
“Let’s not act rashly as we are suspecting her for now. We shall see what is on her mind and inspect the things that she had done in secret.”
Callum nodded while Fandrey was picking up his phone and said, “I have to tell William about this.”
“What? Dad, you will accuse an innocent person without coming to a conclusion. What if she is not the one…”
Fandrey interrupted him and said, “I know what are you trying to say, and don’t worry about it. I won’t tell William about our opinion as I plan to tell him the whole situation and let him make up his own mind.”
“How could he wrap his head around it when he is just a playboy? We can investigate this matter to settle it ourselves and only notify him about the result.”
Fandrey blinked and said, “Just a playboy? Hehe! Callum, you have underestimated him. The both of you are incomparable as he is no ordinary man!”
